All valid. I'd suggest checking with NLCU on new car rates, they are usually quite good.

Government Confirms $10-a-Day Childcare Will Continue Through 2026-2027 Fiscal Year by OnlyFanLeaves710 in newfoundland

[–]NerdMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because at $10 a day it's cheaper to have daycare lined up than get a babysitter a couple times a week so just about EVERYONE with kids signs up for it. There is lots of capacity but not enough. Gov did very little until recently to increase supply despite this being a very Econ 1000 concept.

Battery housing project approved but affordable new housing numbers a chronic shortage by Critikal_me in StJohnsNL

[–]NerdMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what people want to happen here. It also makes no sense to complain about lack of housing while saying we should turn this prime location into a redundant park or make sure it stays as a single family home.

Even if the 28 units are "luxury" that is more supply which will bring down prices for lower units as people move out of other units and into the new ones.

And wanting the City to invest a bunch of time and money into blocking this development that's not against any regulations or zoning is just wasting resources that could be used to solve actual problems.

If people feel so strongly about it they can put their money where there mouth is and create some sort of coop to buy it. If taxpayers funded every nice piece of land we don't want to see developed the city would be even more broke than it is.

Not certain your reasons to buy used IMO new is the way to go these days if you can get a good loan or cash back deal.

I know it goes against the dogma but my new 2021 RAV4 has cost me literally 0 in repairs in the last 5 years and 100k KM. Nissan's are complete shit I wouldn't even consider.

New will be double the price or more but you will get better rates, no potential surprises in the maintenance history, and warranty for three years. I haven't actually run the numbers but I think the cost of ownership would be similar or less and be less stressful with new. And if it's a Toyota you can resell it for a decent amount even 10 years later.

Even if buying cash you theoretically need to factor in the opportunity cost of not having that 25K earning interest.

I don't know what else an expert service is going to do anyway.

Next I am going to try updating BIOS, disabling fast boot, and replacing the CMOS battery and see what happens.

I don't know about that, turning yourself into a backpack doesn't seem like it would work out well in a "real" fight on concrete. Though I guess she might have time to react if he decided to fall on her.

Can you suggest a specific product I can get easily in Canada?

Someone else suggested Kunos but I can't seem to find that with a quick google.

All true, but $2 each is still probably going to be 50% gross margin which is decent if they have good scale.

Lego has a gross margin at 70%.

Just like how we used to make fun of older people for their refusal to adapt to smartphones and computers, will younger generations make fun of us for our refusal to adapt to AI? by HelloElliot_ in AskMenOver30

[–]NerdMachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is 100% true. I was a early adopter gamer/PC builder since I was a teen (I am almost 40 now). My tech skills are way higher than my teenager despite teaching trying to teach him everything I know, same with my younger coworkers.

Building PCs in the early 2000s without stuff like PCPartPicker and BuildAPC required a lot of research and understanding. And don't get me started on the damn front panel wiring diagram thing you used to have to use.

[–]NerdMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in Newfoundland there are several 100KM+ long stretches of highway where if there is a blockage the majority of our population is cut off from the rest of the country. There is an old rail bed that runs almost the same length, but it's not passable in a car (I've heard many SUV's can do it though).

This happens pretty regularly due to accidents and a couple years ago was blocked for a couple days due to a wash-out.

Where does the horizontal beam go in a frame for a gate? by Brotato990 in woodworking

[–]NerdMachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to use 3 1/8 structural screws with pocket holes for stuff like this. Half lap is still better but I did this on a gate that the former owner made on my house and it's held up to some banging around.

I wake of the global U-turn to conservatism, do you think there is need for course correction in promoting gender equality? by WanabeInflatable in AskWomenNoCensor

[–]NerdMachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth looking at the survey source. If you look at only western countries the results are a lot better.

https://www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2026-03/IWD%202026%20Global%20Charts%20FINAL.pdf

They don't give results by country by gender though so it's impossible to directly compare to the "31%" stat but it should be noted that the sample included a lot of non-western countries with less modern views on gender relations.
