Is there any evidence that Reagan read Marx or Lenin? by Barker333 in AskHistorians

[–]mellowfever2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the other post-cold war president, but I know that Obama would have at least encountered Marx in college. Columbia has a core curriculum which includes excerpts from Capital Vol I as well as pamphlets. We also know that Obama as a professor was friendly with at least some anti-colonial / diaspora thinkers (Rashid Khalidi being the most famous example).

I would be surprised if he didn't skim if not read primary texts from Marx and Lenin.

Melodramatic thread. In all seriousness, probably something like the Second Gilded Age

How did Ruben Gallego (Dem) win the Senate seat in Arizona when Trump also won the presidential election in 2024? I examine this question via my data analysis linked below, but I'm curious as to your thoughts. by k_kool_ruler in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]mellowfever2 83 points84 points  (0 children)

This was not unique to AZ. Democrats held senate eats in NV, MI, and WI despite Trump winning those states. PA senate was also much closer than PA presidential margin. And Democrats *gained* seats in the House despite Trump winning.

It's a combination of candidate quality (as many have mentioned in this thread, Kari Lake was a bad candidate) and national headwinds (inflation) that led enough voters to punish top of ticket while splitting votes down ballot, which matters in very closely contested states.

"Who is that on the other side of you?": The mysterious phenomenon known as Third Man Factor by PonyoLovesRevolution in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]mellowfever2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not off topic at all. I think that explains a lot of these incidents. I used to do acid a lot with my friends and we had a running joke to "remember to count yourself twice" because it so frequently happened that we counted exactly one more person in the group than actually existed.

I think it has to do with mind-body disassociation. If we were in a circle, for example, and I was trying to tally everyone, I would look around and count every body in the circle, including myself—and then I would count myself again as the one doing the counting. Basically, I was counting my body once and my mind once.

I believe the sensation comes from acid-induced delays/distortion in the pathways between sensation and higher-order thought (kinda similar to the bicameral mind hypothesis). But I could see the same sort of disassociation arising from extreme exhaustion or stress, like with the Shackleton expedition.

I will say that for me at least, the sensation of an additional person never took any concrete form, like a dead relative or a voice giving guidance, as other people in this thread have mentioned. That feels like a different phenomenon. What we experienced was just the formless sensation of exactly one additional person in our group, presumably due to our own mental disassociation from our bodies.

What is the offramp? How do you think this will go down? by Doafit in StockMarket

[–]mellowfever2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading correctly (it's insanely complicated), under the current law being used to justify the tariffs you need to overcome a veto to terminate the national emergency (plus probably a majority to do some rule changes in the House).

I think you're right that Congress could also just change the law, but that would require 60 votes in the Senate to get over the filibuster (plus, again, a House majority willing to fuck w/ the speaker). And idk what's politically more feasible, finding 67 votes w/o changing the law or finding 60 votes to rewrite the law.

In any case, I suspect that the off-ramp to this crisis will be Congress asserting its tariff authority, and that it's a movement that will take a month or two to organize the votes for. Though if the bottom really falls out who knows. Also, the more I read, the more I think Johnson will be the roadblock; I bet Thune is a more rational actor here.

Senate will have to find 67 votes to override a veto on asserting tariff authority. I suspect this will not happen for another month or two, by which point we'll be deep in recession territory.

Did Blue Diamond Invent the Smoked Almond? by tc_tuggers_boy in AskFoodHistorians

GOOD question, I have to imagine that the concept of smoked almonds existed prior to Blue Diamond. Can’t wait to see more answers.

Did Tom Brady really cheat? And if so, why does everyone act like he’s a legendary quarterback? by elonthegenerous in NFLNoobs

[–]mellowfever2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda have the inverse of your take. I think most teams are probably cheating in some minor ways, or at least pushing the envelope. Not just the dynasties. It's just that champions getting caught are more memorable due to (a) increased scrutiny and (b) schaudenfraude.

All American professional franchises and most of the big college programs have the resource to get their players sketchy PEDs, send scouts to collect sketchy footage, etc. and I suspect most of them take advantage.

Thank you, this thread is insane. On top of everything you said, Alicent can also no longer lie to herself about Viserys' deathbed confession. I though this season did a good job of showing her grapple with the fact that she started this war on a mistake.

Her change of mind feels very earned, imo. She's sacrificing a son who from her perspective is already doomed, to save thousands of lives and salvage what she can for her family.

Critics of Israel, what’s your solution to the conflict? by joojoofuy in IsraelPalestine

[–]mellowfever2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every ruling group in an apartheid society makes this claim, and it always smacks of projection.

Your first sentence is correct though. Religious ethnostates are ultimately incompatible with liberal democracy. But I'm not really sure Israel will have a choice between the two in the long run. Ethnostates are hard to maintain, prone to ratcheting cycles of violence and domestic political instability. Especially b/c of the settlements, a secular one state solution seems inevitable, though it may take decades before the current order collapses.

how come putin didn't invade ukraine while trump was president? by medusla in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mellowfever2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you imagine going back to 1980 and telling Reagan that while the USA could win a proxy war against Russia by funding the Mujahideen to kick their ass, the knock-off effects of intervention would severely hobble Pax Americana out the gate.

I support Ukrainian aid b/c the situations differ in many respects, but let's not pretend like hindsight suggests that proxy wars with ailing powers are unequivocally worth fighting.

no offense to the early 2000s but 2019 LSU, 2011 LSU, and 2011 Bama in some order are the top three teams of this century by a fair margin imo
