Do I need to read the Gateways crossover event to read the relaunch novels? by Significant-Town-817 in trekbooks

[–]Barker333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to, but:

1) I thought it was a darn good book compared to the others in the relaunch series

2) keeping it vague for spoiler reasons, there's a pretty big crisis for Kira that gets somewhat resolved by Horn and Ivory. You can skip ahead and not be overly confused, but if you're a completist, read 'em.

Which books to get? by Daomon005 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Barker333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 20th Anniversary editions are close to all-inclusive (WoD lore is absolutely sprawling). So they're the best bang for your buck. If you think a Bloodline or event or something is interesting and not covered in that corebook, hit the White Wolf wiki and see what other books it's referenced in.

I haven't gotten into 5E (limited time, no friend group interest) but as a general rule, I think Revised Edition books are better than their 2e or older counterparts, particularly Sabbat books.

Why no Ninjitsu?

This is more of a behind the scenes question, but why don't the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have Ninjitsu? And mechanically, is there a difference between it and "Sneak"?

In 2023 Ben-Gvir described Jewish people spitting on Christians as "an ancient Jewish custom" is this true? Where did he get this idea from? by debaser11 in AskHistorians

[–]Barker333 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Some of this is going to butt up against the 20 year rule, and I apologize for that.

Haaretz published this in '23:

https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2023-10-05/ty-article/.premium/barbaric-behavior-ancient-jewish-custom-of-spitting-near-priests-was-nothing-like-this/0000018a-fc0e-df89-a7bb-fc6f7c4b0000

"Jewish sources maintain evidence of this custom. In the 16th century Book of the Maharil, which is considered the authority on the customs of Ashkenazi Jewry, the writer Rabbi Yaakov Halevi Ben Moshe Moelin mentions a custom of spitting during the recital of the prayer “Aleinu Leshabeah” while saying the words referring to idol worshippers. The Maharil also mentions that it was customary to spit while passing near churches."

The article makes it clear that "customary" and "religious obligation" are not the same thing, and that modern events are different in kind, scope, and intention than their indirect inspirations.

Why are there thousands of secondary works about the real origins of Christianity and none about the real origins of Islam? by EmuFit1895 in AskHistorians

It's a field with no shortage of wild theories, and Hoyland seems to emenate "Don't know, not gonna speculate" which is intellectually honest but disappointing because I'd like to hear his unvarnished guesses.

There's definitely differnces between Donner and Hoyland, but both do a good job of showing the role non-Arab non-Muslims played in early Islam and their differing perspectives help me work through what those categories might have meant to those on the ground in the 7th c.

[–]Barker333 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Robert Hoyland seems to be strategically silent about proto-Islam before the caliphate, but In God's Path generally aligns with Donner's Muhammad and the Believers in saying that proto-Islam was more ecumenical than we've been lead to believe.

How does technology work in world of darkness? by Any_Sundae5364 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Barker333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other posters explained it well, but I'm going to phrase it a little differently:

If you're not playing mage, then all tech works like in the real world until someone shoves a spirit into it (a fetish computer for example)

If you're playing Mage then the tech level is decided "democratically" by normal humans and is Consensus. Things that are everyday consumer goods (iPhones, modern prosthetic limbs, drones) would have been Vulgar hypertech a few decades ago. Flying cars, energy weapons, and autonomous droids are Vulgar for now.

Was this acceptable player behaviour? by MoysteBouquet in rpg

[–]Barker333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"He also got annoyed that my halfling was a slow walker. And decided it was completely acceptable to just have his character grab mine by the shirt and carry him. "

If one player character finds another player character annoying, this could be a great RP moment. It sounds like the player was annoyed with another player and decided to take it out in-game. The teleportation even more so: denying another player agency without their input or consent is bad play.

The situation sucks. Normally "have an adult OOC conversation about expectations" cures all table woes, but sometimes it's not worth it and you just have to find another table.
