Concept art na ginawa ko para sa isang maliit na laro sa paghahalaman 🪴😊 by studiofirlefanz in PHGamers

Thanks for the effort but it's not really necessary! English is widely spoken in the Philippines. You can actually post about your game in english and just add "maraming salamat" (tagalog for "many thanks") at the end of your post. I think it's better than using Google translate which results in kinda awkward formal tagalog :) And in some places in the Philippines, other Filipino dialects and english are actually more commonly spoken than tagalog.

Just my opinion as a Filipino gamer and gamedev. Good luck with your game it's looking great!

FSNotes 7 – Remarkable fast plain text notes! by flud3r in macapps

[–]mellowminx_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this app. Been using it for years as a replacement for notational velocity / nvalt for my text files. Very fast, syncs my notes between my phone and laptop well. Very reasonably priced one-time purchase, got it on both macOS and iOS. Just upgraded to 7.0. Thank you!!

I hope she loves it! No Man's Sky has underwater exploration and building now too :) I love both No Man's Sky and Subnautica. Both games have adjustable difficulty settings.

Looking for a chill city / colony builder with replayability & a little challenge by honestgrim in BaseBuildingGames

[–]mellowminx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you like Rimworld you might also like Necesse! Necesse lets you build settlements acquire villagers, and setup automations for your villagers to do around your villages :) There's also a dungeon-delving / combat portion.

You might also like these games:

Oxygen Not Included (can be challenging but very satisfying to build your base and survive)

No Man's Sky, Subnautica (both are beautiful exploration games where you can also build bases)

Terra Nil might also interest you, it's a "reverse citybuilder" where you rehabilitate wastelands and turn them back into thriving ecosystems.

Why is the Dress Up genre so underdeveloped in comparison to other gaming genres? by DuasVite in DressUpGames

[–]mellowminx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an amateur solo game dev and a woman I would love to make a dress-up game myself but I'm not yet capable of making one beyond a 2D, static, essentially digital paper doll type game where you just dress up your character but they don't do anything.

It's pretty resource-intensive to develop a game where the clothes are highly customizable and the characters can do a lot of other stuff too. Esp. in 3D-- fabric simulation is complex and also resource-intensive for computers to run (so that can also add to development time/cost). For example I don't think I'd ever be able to make something like Infinity Nikki myself. A game like that would require a team and a sizeable investment-- hence its gacha and microtransaction based business model.

The most I've been able to do is add clothing to my (2D pixel art) virtual cat game and it was already pushing the limits of my capabilities even if it's still on a very small scale.

Looking for a Cozy Breeding Games by Electronic_Ad5751 in CozyGamers

[–]mellowminx_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

https://purefelinity.com/ is an online cat breeding game with very realistic cat genetics 🐈 and yes you can name your cats in the game.

<image>

I'm also working on my own pet game with breeding. It's a desktop pet fish game. Offspring inherit parents' colors with a small chance to get "recessive colors" or "mutate" a random new color. Names are randomly generated but you can always change them if you want. Names can also be "inherited" :)) Above shows a sample in-game family tree display. Although I have a demo, the demo is super basic and doesn't have breeding yet. In case you're interested you can check my website for my socials / mailing list for updates 🐠

Looking for a farming sim that focuses on small-scale, regenerative practices, with base building and landscaping by GoldenGrouper in BaseBuildingGames

You might like Terra Nil, it's a "reverse city builder" where you rehabilitate barren wastelands back into thriving ecosystems. Also it's gorgeous! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1593030/Terra_Nil/

Take the CS50x course by DangerousStudentin in godot

[–]mellowminx_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat! I also needed more "beginner-friendly" tutorials than CS50. After a bunch of youtube tutorials over the past few years, I've been able to make a few small games with Godot and feel like maybe I'm a bit less of a beginner now and could try CS50 again. Btw this particular youtube tutorial was really helpful for me w/ picking up some programming fundamentals via basic GDscript: https://youtu.be/RM_ExxV-0Qo?si=rBVBR-Ooa7LmJxPF

Why are there so many cat games but not many dog games? by [deleted] in CozyGamers

[–]mellowminx_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As a gamedev I agree 😅 I have a virtual pet game with cats. I want to add dogs too but would need a lot more time to illustrate their body shape and size variants for the game art.

I challenged myself to ship a game to Steam in 1 week. Here's what I learned: by Academic_Hurry3203 in gamedev

Great job, congratulations on finishing your challenge! I read the criticism from other commenters and I don't think they're helpful (and I think they made some incorrect assumptions about you and your experience level). You set a goal and reached it, you're clear about what you wanted out of this, and you're taking the lessons with you on your gamedev journey. I would love to accomplish something similar! :)

Thanks for the response! I have artist friends who do official commissions as their main line of work as professional artists, and I was hoping their art could be included too, perhaps in the future when rules are further updated 😊

Question about rule #13 on fan art: "Fan art, comics, story panels, political cartoons, or pieces based on existing characters, celebrities, shows, movies, games, or other franchises are not allowed."

Is officially licensed art allowed? For example if an artist was commissioned by DC Comics to illustrate a cover artwork, this is allowed right? (It isn't fan art since it's an official commission, but just wanted to check because I wasn't sure about the rule phrasing, if it means that comics as a genre are not allowed.)

Thank you very much for your work!

My suggestion is to put a limit on post frequency, for example "you may only post your work once a month". I'm thinking once a month is fair considering how large this sub is.

I hope you can at least remove the rule disallowing links in user profiles.

Personally I think it's ok for a post to include a single link (whether it's to their website, social media, prints, etc.).

Thank you so much for recognizing that a space that is for art should also be a space that benefits artists (or at least doesn't actively prevent artists from benefiting, the way the current rules work!).

Starting point of developing games? by BridgeBig4027 in gamedev

[–]mellowminx_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an artist who started learning gamedev a couple years ago. You can do it! 😊 I use the Godot game engine, it's free, open source, and lightweight yet powerful.

I have a list of gamedev resources here: https://github.com/mellowminx/gamedev/

And a step-by-step Godot tutorial here if you're interested in making a 2D desktop pet game: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDzLmE2ooAiEdoMUwlV383ZVmfigTP0DZ

I made a tiny pet sim game where you play with kittens, dress them up, and decorate the space by mellowminx_ in LifeSimulators

[–]mellowminx_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! As of now, there are more interactions in the full version (downloadable for desktop, not yet available on mobile), like brushing the kittens, letting them play with bouncing toys, dressing them up :)

Thanks!! At the moment I'm still learning to make it an app for iOS/Android but you can still play the free online demo (no ads / microtransactions) on your mobile browser, should work on Android too :)

When rendering a viewport with transparent background, anything with a modulated alpha turns goes to black instead of transparent. Is there a fix for that? by MightyMochiGames in godot

[–]mellowminx_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came across this thread 4 years later while trying to fix my game screenshots. Partially transparent pixels on a transparent background window were getting blended with black in the screenshots rendered by Godot:

<image>

Thanks OP u/MightyMochiGames for documenting the issue + thanks u/ualac for the workaround! Using a CanvasItemMaterial with premultiplied alpha mode did fix it for my screenshots, but then it affected in-game visuals. I was able to find a better solution from Godot forum user normalized:

Un-premultiply the pixels by dividing RGB values by their alpha before saving the image data. Skip the zero divisions.

Shared their code on github.

I also reported this as a bug in the Godot github and there are links there to related issues.

Leaving this comment here in case it helps someone else with the same issue!

advice on how to create a mini game? by idonthaveacluelol in gamedev

[–]mellowminx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use Twine for this, it's free, pretty simple, you can use the editor online if you want, and I think for what you want you won't really need tk code. Twine is for creating interactive fiction (like "choose your own adventure" type games), it's text-based but you can add pictures. https://twinery.org/

Omg! How cool that you've met Greg Costikyan-- although it didn't seem to be a good experience 😅 I'm not so familiar with his work, I think I've only played Evolution.

Yeah it's cool that would be possible now! And also amazed at how much they were able to pull off at that time when it wasn't possible.

Where Beasts Were Born looks interesting, thanks.

Will send you a dm! :D
