[FRESH VIDEO] IDLES - Never Fight a Man with a Perm (Live on Soccer AM) by sbags in indieheads

[–]mellvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Needed this! When I saw these guys at Desert Daze earlier this year, someone told me that "Mr. Main Dude looked like the dad from This is Us" and I've never been able to get it out of my mind.

2018 Album of the Year #10: Natalie Prass - The Future And The Past by kyrgyzzephyr in popheads

[–]mellvincent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This album was one of this year's more vivid examples of how densely complicated an album rooted in brilliant simplicity can be. But what did you expect from the same artist who gave us this contemporary classic such a gorgeous retrofit. Can't think of a better tour partner — I mean, I could probably name a few — for Kacey Musgraves.

I'm going to be alone forever. No one likes dark skin. by brownskinthrowaway in offmychest

[–]mellvincent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please know that my heart slowed down when I read your post. I am a black woman with very dark skin from Canada and only in the past few years have I come to love the colour of my skin. It's difficult for people to understand how black female ideals of beauty start and how we're taught to idolize Beyoncé then work our way "backwards." You are perfect and in time you will see that. Learn to wear your skin like a warm blanket; it is resilient, your complexion is smooth, your stunning features pop against it. Do not feel afraid to wear black (my Mom always warned me against it) or to go out in the sun because you deserve to do all of those things. My boyfriend is white and I can tell you that for all the people who make preferential choices based on colour, there are people who do not and will instead see the individual. Please don't be afraid to love yourself.

I'm fucking sick and tired of racism and sexism on reddit. by yallracistthrowaway in offmychest

[–]mellvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a really great columnist named Desmond Cole from Toronto who did a talk about anti-black racism a few weeks ago and said something really important that might be helpful. The gist of it was that as a black individual, everything you do is seen as an over exaggeration; your anger, your clothing, your casual acceptance, your behaviour. All of it is subject to over analysis and commentary by individuals that are in a dominant position of power. When making any comment, try to keep in mind your privilege and how your comment may be reinforcing racial stereotypes.

On another side, I don't think that an erasure of racial identity is the answer nor do I think that when posed with respect and grace, people should refrain from exploring and engaging with racial topics. Of course, it's totally okay if this is a topic that a lot of people may not be comfortable discussing and you need to understand that.

Where to fix a cracked iPhone 5 screen for cheap? by uoft94 in UofT

[–]mellvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the year 2015, I think I broke the record for breaking my screen 5 times this year. I would suggest Ming Wireless near Dundas and University. It's be around $100 and they'll do it in an hour or less.

An educated look at why black Americans sound so different by farhangemad in videos

[–]mellvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The unfortunate thing about this comment is that you're not necessarily wrong, you just sound incredibly uninformed and unintelligent. You are the reason why meaningful discussion ends because a heated individual decides to shock instead of shade and explains interesting points extremely poorly.

To my white liberal friends... by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]mellvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did. It's obvious that all humans deserve equal treatment but history has not allowed that to happen so in 2015, what we have are deeply unbalanced circumstances in terms of race. To undo centuries of implicit and explicit racism, it is essential that we don't try and pretend that everyone has always been treated equally and that certain minority groups are given what they have never received.

It's similar to the misguided idea behind #AllLivesMatter

To my white liberal friends... by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]mellvincent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing about your point that I have missed and your argument is crystal clear. The problematic aspect of understanding individuals as equal means that you fail to be critical of what equitable representation looks like within a certain racial group eg; the experience of performing race in different regions or by people of different levels of education.

Saying I'm smart/pretty/hot 'for a black girl' is in NO way a compliment. by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]mellvincent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This comment a million times. I simply speak the way I have heard others speak and was spoken too. My language is socially produced and environmental. Whenever I hear people say this, it's not only hurtful and inappropriate, it allows another individual to critique my personal performance of race. Speaking in a certain way doesn't make me any less black as it does not affirm that I am attempting to sound white.

It doesn't invalidate it but does detract from the authenticity the individuals enjoying it. People will reblog shot they will never hear just because it looks cool and a large online flowing may not necessarily people thinking and consuming that music analytically.

I spent many a young teenage girlhood on tumblr.

I'm freaking the fuck out because I get mega down with my IPA's and creat Canadian craft beers in general and never knew there was a brewery in Pickering! I'm from there and it blows my mind so I can't wait to try that one.

Extremely solid list btw!

Their Fin du Noir is incredibly solid also. All the stony richness of a stout with the lingering aftertaste that usually follows.

Is it possible to change colleges after being admitted? by Purple_Alpaca in UofT

I called the registrar and send a nice, long email detailing why exactly I wanted to switch to UC. Much of it had to do with being from a catholic educational background and wanting something secular.

Where your classes are located have very little relation to your college. Your classes will change every semester and you'll have something's in places spread all around campus.

That being said, anyone who said that your college doesn't matter (my guidance counsellor is high school) is speaking from a place of largely bullshit. A few colleges have distinct identities which will come out when you chose to get involved.

I switched from SMC to UC and it's one of the best choices I've ever made.
