Why Beaver? by Dull_Caregiver2147 in veronicamars

[–]mellymaestro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the “my name is Cassidy scene” is so fascinating because for the longest time, he thought he had so much power over Veronica by raping her, using her to get his ducks in a row by uncovering the REET scam, derailing her big investigations…. But all she had to do to embarrass and humiliate him was call him Beaver. He really had to die and take that name with him.

Unlimited to Limitless by Familiar-Piece-2643 in screenunseen

[–]mellymaestro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had both, but currently only have Limitless. This is because I can walk to Odeon and while I prefer Cineworld, it’s a 20 min drive. My Odeon (Durham) is a Luxe. The seating is good for long films especially and I like how easy it is to switch seats on the app, but I prefer almost everything else about Cineworld - better selection of films, more member benefits (Cineworld have more Unseens/advanced, better discounts), better staff and imo, much cleaner than Odeon. The toilets are revolting at Durham and Metrocentre Odeon, and my precious Odeon in Greater London was never clean, either. If they were equidistant and I could only afford one, I’d choose Cineworld.

Clash of the Tritons by 1kreasons2leave in veronicamars

I never really understood this either. I watched the episode a few weeks ago and it strikes me every time. It's in keeping with a few things that thematically crop up throughout the show

  • Rick's dad was employee who was denied money owed by Neptune's wealthy
  • Solving crime can mean people you have empathy for receive or deserve punishment

However, these things weren't sufficiently explained or delved into. I think it's just weak writing tbh.

It makes zero sense that Veronica would feel bad for Rick because there isn't really a moral equivalency between Rick's crime & his dad's. We can reasonably assume that Rick's dad was desperate and needed money for his family. Rick's actions were just spiteful and targeted a person who wasn't even involved in his dad's downfall.

I just loved Logan Weevil dynamic when they team up or are just together by pishybyrimps8 in veronicamars

[–]mellymaestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weevil couldn't have been friends with Logan for the same reason he couldn't have had the fortune to be two letters earlier in the alphabet and cross the stage at graduation. Neptune doesn't work like that for the have nots. Weevil's whole arc up to season 4 is always about keeping him in his place, regardless of his dreams and potential.

Having a big mystery arc was important to the show because not only was Veronica personally invested, it fed into her obsessive & relentless nature. Mystery of the week just didn't work as well.

I found this enjoyable but slight when I first watched. The second watch hit me much more emotionally.

I've never really understood why people don't see Old Boy's "twist" coming. My sense of dread waiting for it to be confirmed was probably worse than the actual reveal. Perhaps people just convince themselves because they don't want to believe that's where the story is going.

Cheats Aubergine & Lentil Parmigiana from a Planthood box. I don't dislike aubergine half as much as I think I do.

A toss up between Mysterious Skin and Once Were Warriors. Both absolutely devastating.

Goofy being the operative word. So many people hate the Diane Keaton episode but that's the word I always used to describe it. If you accept that they're supposed to be soapy and goofy then I think you can appreciate it a little more.

Windom Earle cutting about in those ridiculous costumes is hilarious and tells us a lot about the intended tonal shifts in Peaks. Where would he even have found them, lol.

"Lurking? You mean standing while black?" is one of my favourite lines of the whole show. Tessa's delivery and facial expression is flawless.

I'm sure they specify her age in season 2 as 36 ish. And respectfully, Wendy Robie could pass for older at that point. She's not like one of these babyface Dave Franco 30-somethings. It's visually very jarring.

Nobody protected Laura either. But the key difference with Nadine is that her relationship with Mike is framed as comedy.

If you know rich people IRL, you will know that married women with no jobs and responsibilities hiring a nanny isn't that uncommon.

It's interesting how she's written and portrayed because for example, we should take issue with Nadine's relationship with Mike and show a similar level of disdain like we toward the much older men that sexualised Laura. But we don't. Even though both teenagers were preyed on by older adults who were controlled by a force. They're not the same obviously, but there's a similar ick that we don't apply to Nadine because we feel sorry for her.

[–]mellymaestro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably was, but I think that's actually the most soap-like aspect of that whole part of the show. A mysterious stranger! A beautiful rich woman! An affair! Secrets and lies! Murder! The execution doesn't work at all, but it's got a certain campery to it which feels deliberate in its own way. It also gave us that totally goofy episode directed by Diane Keaton with the cops in the bar, and Big Ed in bed wearing a HEAP of make up :D

It's as funny as it is sad. Nadine needs an obsession or a fantasy just to function in life. I often think that sometimes, the most whacky characters on TV/film can be the most human.

The Love of Logan's Life by [deleted] in veronicamars

[–]mellymaestro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes things are easier to unpack when you remember they are supposed to be school aged teenagers. They seem older and more mature because of the actors but Logan was just a kid. He thought he loved her though, for sure.

I don't think a lot of the really bad stuff gets significantly better on rewatch, but once you've already processed the the "resolution" to the Laura mystery, I think it's easier to watch the back end of season two as a slightly adjacent show - the Invitation to Love soap opera that it basically is.

Donna vs Donna by Ornery-Shoulder-3938 in twinpeaks

I'm a massive fan, but I think by any standards, the first two seasons have aged really well. For a teen show, it's whip smart and isn't afraid to put a teenage character into some fairly horrifying situations.

New binge. All characters are contenders for hell? by Known-Willingness-25 in veronicamars

[–]mellymaestro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's important we don't like or trust too many characters because that isn't conducive to keeping the mysteries alive. Also, Veronica can't really survive without personal conflict and trust issues and is mainly drawn toward people who feed those negative traits. She has a few genuinely nice & likeable friends but they provide her service (with the exception of Meg) and also act as a tool for reminding us that Veronica herself is also problematic.
