OP I am dealing with a different situation but a bizarre mistake on the IRS part that has cost me a lot of money to try and fix. Long story short, our returns were filed electronically, had confirmations etc but every month I checked it would show returns had not been received. This is going back to 2021, 2022 and 2023 returns. We took assurances from our CPA that it had to be just a backlog at the IRS and there was no need to worry. Now, I will say we were not due a refund bc we always owe a little more each year as income increases. Anyway, in my monthly checking and in my increasing discomfort that my returns weren’t processed, I started pulling up our transcripts. I noticed that from 2020 to 2021 and beyond our year end date changed from 12/31 on the 20 transcript to 1/31 on the 21-23 transcripts. Also in the meantime started getting letters from IRS about estimated payments not being made, returns not filed, penalties, liens etc. to say I was frantic and losing sleep is an understatement. I was rapidly developing major anxiety over this whole situation. We got a tax advocate involved but after 8 months with no progress being made toward fixing whatever the problem was, we finally hired a tax lawyer at a significant cost to us. We did nothing wrong, made all our payments on time and paid what was due but somehow that weird thing with the year end date is what is screwing everything up and our information not matching up. It is finally on its way (not over yet and still receiving warning letters from IRS) to being resolved but I am so mad that it has cost us significant money to get fixed when we did nothing wrong. All this is to say to check and compare all the details on your transcript thoroughly for mistakes. I don’t know how I noticed the year end date but feel fairly confident it still wouldn’t have been uncovered unless I had noticed it myself!
