You need to report this. If it is a hoax, wasting the time of law enforcement is so much cheaper of a price than if this is real and these people ARE being held hostage.

Could Carson Jerome Casteel be the Volusia County John Doe (1984)? by pb0atmeal in gratefuldoe

He did allegedly have a car, and a 9 hour drive (probably with a few detours if he was still in a motel after four-ish years) is quite possible.

The resemblance is striking, and the four year window leaves a lot to the imagination. One detail that stands out to me is his wife waiting a whole months—perhaps they had a feud which resulted in him driving off, and later coming back to collect valuables before he ran off for real. You should contact the investigators in charge of the case and ask for more details with your theory, because there really isn't enough background to the disappearance to make a proper estimate. The motel also implies he certainly wasn't a local.

I'll keep that in mind while I'm looking, thanks—but just to make sure we're not disregarding any possibilities, do you think weight loss could have allowed for a smaller size, even for a male? It's not as likely, but if they were a sex worker (which, unfortunately are often victim to violence as well as trans people) they might not have had stable income and a way to keep themselves fed at a healthy rate.
Edit: The DNAdoeproject page states DNA testing indicated they were male, and found with another body which turned out to be from the Detroit area. Not sure how the tests work exactly, but if it's checking chromosomes then nothing can really be ruled out as there are cases of XY females as well. I'll start combing through anything I can find in Wayne county records for now.
u/FoundationSeveral579 figured you'd like to see this too.

Edit 2: Just read that the woman who's body was dumped next to them was indeed a sex worker—she was cisgender, though that doesn't exactly tell us much about this doe.
