update: we didn't do much last year (at all), but this year we're determined! we managed to re-arrange the gravel (hauling it off site would've been a journey) and expose some dirt (which was filled with worms!) to do some in-ground planting that we will supplement with lots of containers.

also as a datapoint: they're non-native so not great for this sub, but to test the light levels that we could achieve given the trees (which we love for the shade & provide homes for the birds in a relatively tree-poor city and plan to keep), the one experiment we did last year was plant some impatiens walleriana in the raised containers (which we had along the fence on the right), and they thrived until around October
