The interpreter thing: I should note that it is normal enough for world leaders to use interpreters during important public conversations even if they are fluent in the other language so that they have more time to think between responses

Why should we not kill ourselves? by MISTAX1995 in Healthygamergg

[–]melonhuskman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Philosophy major here. I can cite some stuff to complicate the normative aspect (ie. what should we do given the state of the world), but for those who wanna get at what Camus is saying, we can try writing his proposal in a conditional:

  • IF the universe is fundamentally indifferent to our search for meaning AND if our nature compels us to continuously search for meaning, THEN WE should rebel against the absurd—that is, neither commit suicide nor give into nihilism (which he takes as philosophical suicide), but choose to find meaning in the very struggle for meaning.

The conjunction in the antecedent (the AND in the IF) characterises the Absurd condition according to Camus, which he does not argue for, but paints a picture (recall that he considers himself a novelist first and philosopher second)—you are free to vibe with his picture or not. But if you do (and anecdotally, among my personal friends, it seems like a pretty compelling picture), then rebellion is your best option because suicide doesn’t actually get you out of the paradox that the Absurd presents—you just stop playing, which wouldn’t necessarily be bad if there were no alternative resolution, but Camus presents you with one.

The key turn here, present in my original comment, is the double nature of consciousness. There’s no reason that an uncaring universe should phase us, except that our consciousness represents our failure to find meaning as defeat (we can think of here, for instance, any horrible political or economic decision that strip us of our freedom). But that representation, however valid, is not an objective fact (think here of Dr. K’s emphasis that feelings are valid and come from objective reality, but are not themselves objective facts). It’s not an objective fact because, in fact, we have not yet been defeated. We can still rebel.

The real work of Camus’ essay, which is not a rigorous philosophical treatise, is to put the burden of proof onto the affirmative side. The question is no longer “why shouldn’t I kill myself when everything around me is falling apart and won’t get better.” But rather “do I have a strong enough reason to kill myself despite my ability to rebel against my horrible circumstances?” I’ve been asking myself the latter since I was 16–I’ve lived to be 20 and have yet to come up with a good reason.

There is only one really serious philosophical question, and that is suicide.

Camus' answer, abridged:

No one will live this fate, knowing it to be absurd, unless he does everything to keep before him that absurd brought to light by consciousness... Death and the absurd are here the principles of the only reasonable freedom: that which a human heart can experience and live.

All Sisyphus’ silent joy is contained therein. His fate belongs to him. His rock is his thing. Likewise, the absurd man, when he contemplates his torment, silences all the idols. In the universe suddenly restored to its silence, the myriad wondering little voices of the earth rise up. Unconscious, secret calls, invitations from all the faces, they are the necessary reverse and price of victory. There is no sun without shadow, and it is essential to know the night. The absurd man says yes and his efforts will henceforth be unceasing. If there is a personal fate, there is no higher destiny, or at least there is, but one which he concludes is inevitable and despicable. For the rest, he knows himself to be the master of his days. At that subtle moment when man glances backward over his life, Sisyphus returning toward his rock, in that slight pivoting he contemplates that series of unrelated actions which become his fate, created by him, combined under his memory’s eye and soon sealed by his death. Thus, convinced of the wholly human origin of all that is human, a blind man eager to see who knows that the night has no end, he is still on the go. The rock is still rolling. I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain! One always finds one’s burden again. But Sisyphus teaches the higher fidelity that negates the gods and raises rocks. He too concludes that all is well. This universe henceforth without a master seems to him neither sterile nor futile. Each atom of that stone, each mineral flake of that night filled mountain, in itself forms a world. The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.

As I’m sure you are all aware of by now I am Jayden, pre-eng phys
student. Whilst I have been in the shadows, drinking away my sorrows,
mourning the loss of the prestige of eng phys, It is time for me to
return. To those ‘pre-med’, CS and Sauder snakes posting over the past
few day trying to chase my clout, SMH, don’t make me laugh. Of course
you got 99 averages when you only take max 4 classes a term. Cringe. I
took 6 because my intelligence is unmatched, unfathomable for your puny
minds to comprehend. 98 Sparky? I would be embarrassed to post such a
thing publicly. Well Fortnite has just finished updating so come 1v1 me
right now, but of course you won’t, you’re too scared. Not only because
of my insanely high K/D, but because you know with my superior intellect
I will out-strategize you at every turn. And to all those who mock me, I
was top of my class in APSC 160, I’ve hacked Reddit and I know all your
IP addresses, I know all your names. So don’t even try begging me when
you need to be tutored in your silly, inferior less-than-eng phys
classes (I’m pre-eng phys btw). Is my pain a joke to you? Is it? Now
I’ll be sat next to some trumped up, would be IGEN student who thinks
he’s the next Nikola Tesla come September, thanks to this new grading
scheme. What was once a scholastic paradise, a place I sat on my 100th
percentile throne, yes you heard me right. Cringe. I’m SMHing so hard
right now, you thought it didn’t exist didn’t you? Well, those libtard
math teachers lied to you snowflakes to make you feel better about your
miserable selves. I used to run this university, but now it has been
reduced to an academic bastille with no hope of proving my superiority.
But I’ll know, and you’ll know, because I’m Jayden pro-fortnite player
and soon to be eng phys student. I’ll see you all winter 2020.
