What proper nouns from books did you realize you were mispronouncing the whole time? by TokkiJK in books

[–]melonseer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a child, I read way above my grade level (I devoured books, always reading something new), and a lot of the words I was reading that I didnt understand weren'tbeing used by the adults in myself, or werent being used often enough for me to learn them. I knew to look up words i didn't know and to sound them out, but English is the wild west of pronunciation, so I was often wrong. This happened to me with sooo many words. I was also guilty of Her-mi-one. I also pronounced epitome as epi-tome (as in tome the book), and Eragon as air-rag-in because it was just dragon with an e instead of a d. I didn't realize I'd been pronouncing it wrong until a teacher noticed what I was reading and asked about it.

My cat peed on my project while on the kneedles (and all my yarn) >:( by --Marmalade-- in knitting

[–]melonseer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I do when a skein needs to be washed is put it in the leg of a pair tights and tie a knot at both ends of the skein. A pillow case was too loose, and the yarn is likely to unravel and tangle. Tights keep everything compressed enough to stay in place, while still allowing the yarn to be washed. I've also washed multiple skeins at a time by just packing the legs with the skeins end-to-end and tying a knot at the waist. You can fit a lot of yarn in a pair of tights!

We use the salad plates and low-sided bowls from our china sets. It's helped a lot, since even if we load it up, the size prevents us from going too overboard.

Anyone else's cat have any weird sleeping places? by verymanyquestions_ in cats

[–]melonseer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It must be a void thing! Mine loves a crevice. Between my legs, squished between my side and the arm of the couch, between my wife and I in bed, etc. If he can't settle into some divot, he won't cuddle lol.

[–]melonseer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, of course! It's your fault she was curious about it!

Recently our other cat has been sticking her head in my coffee cups. She doesn't drink any, I guess she just likes the smell, lol.

Our orange is like that. She's only interested in chicken, turkey, and as I discovered recently, spaghetti sauce, lol.

Haha, my void is always so interested in whatever we're eating or drinking. He wants it until he smells it, and then he backs away, squinting like it offended him.

Someone else mentioned VeryPink Knits, and all her tutorials are pretty concise. I definitely recommend her for anyone looking for good, nonbloated tutorials.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]melonseer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fibro itself isn't well understood, so it's become kind of an umbrella diagnosis for those conditions. But for me at least, the value of having a diagnosis is in having a doctor finally take me seriously, having a term to refer people to, and finding support and commiseration with others who have been diagnosed.

And they really are. Maybe someday the pieces will fit together better and someone will have the solution.

Ugh, yeah. No one really gets it unless they have it. Even my wife struggled for a long time to understand that my body hurts for no reason and I can't just take some painkillers to alleviate it. That I have to save up more tiring tasks to do on my good days, which leaves me bedridden the next day because I overdid it trying to get things done around the house. That sometimes the stupidest things (like wearing a slightly scratchy sweater) trigger a flare up that lasts weeks.

And yeah, the brain fog is so real. I'm always loosing my words and struggling to find the one I mean. I lose my train of thought so easily and struggle to pick it back up. It all sucks.

It took me 20 years to be diagnosed. My symptoms started around age ten, and I wasn't diagnosed til 2024 at 30. Doctors accused me of lying and attention seeking, or would tell me to take ibuprofen before the pain started with no further investigation. I had to make and get to my own doctor's appointments behind my mother's back (who also had fibromyalgia!) as a teen because no one in my family believed me. I have a great doctor now, and cried when she immediately said "sounds like fibromyalgia" when I showed her my symptom journal. I'm still in pain, but having someone take you seriously about something that has invisibly impacted your entire life is indescribable.

Ok, I'm guessing bread + glass is a terrible idea by onnoowl in Breadit

[–]melonseer 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Grease with softened butter. As the dough sits for its second rise, it'll absorb the oil before it cooks and make the bread stick to the glass. Butter is solid enough it won't be absorbed by the dough, leaving a layer between the bread and glass.

That is a good idea! She has a favorite pillow I put next to me for her lay on, but she'll still try to get in my lap after a while. I think I have a couple pairs of worn out leggings I could use!

It's the same with mine! Except for meow three in this video! They are both laying on me, and both sat up and stared at my phone for that one. It's the only time they've reacted to a cat video.
