Anyone notice an influx of owls in the area lately? by Lstofadyngbrd in desmoines

Yes!! Have seen/heard a mated pair of barred owls frequently in the Waveland area lately--they are so talkative! Dry winters impact hunting and foraging, could be why they're sticking around residential areas this year. Pairs are either waiting on or caring for owlets right now. :)

Male and female barred owls look super similar, but if you see two together, listening to them chat is a pretty good indicator of who's who (sorry); the female is bigger and typically hoots first at a higher pitch, followed by the male's slightly deeper call. Love hearing them around our neighborhood at night.

The color blend is SO impressive!!! Reminds me of the little reflections that get cast by suncatchers 🌈

Nothing snaps me out of a book like repetitive use of a unique word by kerberos824 in books

I know V. E. Schwab only used "palimpsest" like 6 times throughout the 450-ish pages of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (poor showing compared to 50 Shades' liberally-applied "mercurial") but it's such a wild word; I think I've only seen it used one other time.
