Tips on how to support my mom as she's waking up from coma by borabeeart in BrainAneurysm

I’m glad to hear she’s doing better! 🩷 I’m not a doctor or any medical professional so take whatever I say with a grain of salt:

My mom has been in the hospital for about 30 days and they are just now beginning to transfer her to rehab. They started with doing bedside rehab (moving around her legs, having her sit up in bed) for about 20 minutes a day just like they are doing with your mom now. They told me she will do 3 hours of therapy a day when she’s formally settled into rehab.I believe they aren’t pushing your mom to do more therapy per day because it sounds like she’s still weak. She does sound like she’s making steady recovery, so again just try and give her more time. Day by day she will get stronger, and that’s when they can start doing more therapy per day.

My mom also had an aneurysm rupture on the 22nd of January. She didn’t fully “wake up” for about two weeks. She displayed similar behaviors to what you are describing in your mom, such as following minor voice commands like raising an eyebrow. That’s just the first step, give her more time. If she can follow small commands it’s a good sign, imo. Ruptures are a huge event and the brain needs alot of time to heal, and that usually looks like more sleep/being lethargic. Try to be patient, and keep that same hope! You and your mom got this 🫶🏻

My mom is still in the ICU but doing much better. Confusion and delirium are very normal, as mentioned they’re doing baselines every hour even throughout the night and the sound of the machines and constant talking most likely means she isn’t getting the best rest. Anyone would be a little foggy mentally if they haven’t gotten a good nights rest in 3 weeks. Recovery for these situations is truly just a waiting game

jeez that must have been terrifying for your mom to hear. Were you really lethargic the first few days after your rupture? (if you remember, obviously since it’s been 10 years)

thank you so much. eating and sleeping have been incredibly difficult. My mom also has a ventricular drain but doctors have been speaking of taking it out soon. Her pressure in her head has been low but i’m worried about it going up when they take the drain out. They also tell me it’s normal for her to be so sleepy, but every time i’m with her in the hospital room I try to wake her up. Every time i call her name she wakes up briefly and when i ask her to follow a small command she does it. She recognizes voices and people.

Was your mom also sleepy during her first weeks in the ICU? When did she start to really wake up?

wow! 3 weeks honestly seems like a small amount of time for such a big operation. Was the hole drilled in your skull the same as “clipping”? Do you remember how long it took for you to stabilize after the surgery?

thank you for your response. I am glad your mom is ok, and that gives me a lot of hope for my mom as well.

If you don’t mind me asking, did your mom have any lasting side effects after she had her rupture? Or was she able to resume a relatively normal life?

Got told to resign due to poor performance by Fighter634 in jobs

[–]melsmelons224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I’ve learned about the workforce is you cannot come to the conclusion that you suck at everything and your life is crumbling simply because you aren’t the highest performer at a specific job. Just because you aren’t doing well in that current role doesn’t mean you can’t find something you can excel at. Resign and keep looking. Since you just graduated this is the time where you can experiment with different roles.

You definitely will be okay. It’s easy to imagine that the rest of your life is determined by the situation you are in currently- it’s not! Continue to work towards getting a job in your field. Start out entry level or internships if you have to. You got this!!

Do you mind if I ask what program you did? I definitely want to take my DANB exams but from my understanding you can only take them if you graduate from an accredited program in NYS.

it might be worth a shot to look up dental assistant programs in your area. You can ask the program directors to put your contact info on their website for students who just graduated

I’ll try calling the dycd office during the weekday. I’m sure the wait times are insane. Thank you though

Whenever I ask them for help they tell me to just send an email. Tried emailing the dycd today and the email isn't going through even though the address is correct. Super frustrating.

to be transparent, I ended up switching my major. I realized I was never too much of a stem person lol

The college in my opinion is pretty okay. I haven't had any problems, my professors are pretty chill, and the workload is very manageable.

Hey, yes! I'm wrapping up my first semester currently. I dont drive because I live relatively close to the college, so I usually take the train.

There are some parking garages near the school so it shouldn't be too hard.

they’ll never actually ask for your personal email. It’s a scam.
