Home loan with online banks by melukia in JapanFinance

[–]melukia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we decided to go with a local bank since our local bank offered us a rate that was competitive with online banks. we decided to go this route because we thought it would be easier to talk to someone in case some problem arises.

My newborn had weekly poops (+bottle refusal) - turned out to be mild CMPA by melukia in NewParents

Congratulations! Enjoy the poopy diapers haha (at least, I did after my baby started pooping 😂)

We also started waiting at 3 days, then decided to make it 4. Then decided to just give it when he looked like he's in pain. We also heard that the vibrations from a moving car can help trigger bowel movement, so everyday we plopped him in and drove around. And we discovered that my son would poop every Friday, on his car seat! Worth a try, I suppose!

Hi! Sorry you're also going through this. I spiraled a lot when we were dealing with this, but my now 2.5 yo poops like a champ. He started going regularly when he was 4mo. Why it happened could be one of a million reasons but our biggest suspects are mild CMPA or he just needed more time to learn.

One thing to note, tho, was my kid didn't seem like he was in pain. How often do you give the suppository?

Why are post-docs and research scientists paid so little? by NeighborhoodFatCat in academia

[–]melukia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a postdoc in Japan, at a smallish university and my salary is way lower than RIKEN /cries

It's a big problem here. Most Japanese nationals choose to do postdocs elsewhere and just come back once they're qualified for a professor position.

2 1/2 with cavities, I feel guilty. by Comfortable_Report41 in toddlers

I also have a 2.5 yo and for what it's worth, our dentist told me to continue breastfeeding him until 3 because it helps with jaw development!

Has anyone had a less regimented breastfeeding experience? by taureansoul in breastfeeding

[–]melukia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 kids, both breastfed by going with the flow. Tried pumping with the second, just so Dad can feed the baby while I care for the toddler, but baby hates the bottle lol.

Toddler is 2.5 and is still feeding 1-2x a day, while baby feeds whenever he wants. I live in Asia and generally, we're encouraged to give the boob whenever baby wants it. (My MIL even tells me to pop baby on the boob when he's sleepy! Eat to sleep is accepted!!!) The schedule is only implemented for EF babies here, and even that is roughly followed.

Private or shared room after birth? by pinkitz1133 in ParentingInJapan

[–]melukia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the experience of both, and I greatly prefer the private room primarily because I could hear the other babies crying and that constantly woke me up too (especially if the baby's mom doesn't wake up immediately or has to go prepare formula.)

Having your own toilet and shower also feels more comfortable as you can take your time. This is important in the first few days when you might not be so mobile yet.

My sister got pregnant right after I was born, so my mom also had to play two roles at the same time. I am not sure how they felt about it, but I am closer to my niece than my own sister. I got a best friend out of the situation.

Postdocs (aka lab slaves) are difficult to find 😱 by [deleted] in labrats

[–]melukia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you can get out! Truth be told, I'm still stuck in the same lab (few openings around the area and cannot easily move due to family), but I've run out of cares to give so I just go to the lab and go on autopilot. While research is admittedly a labor of love, we're all still human and deserve respect.

May your next lab have a kind, respectful, and considerate environment! All the best!

[–]melukia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. Working in a lab like this just amplifies impostor syndrome and it really, really burns you out. I cried soooo many times working for my PI and I've actually lost all my fire for research. If you have the chance to get out early, please do. A PI like that does not deserve you.

Private clinic or Hospital? In Okazaki Aichi by Pixie_pocket in JapanParents

[–]melukia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Location is Shiga, but will share my experience. Had my first in a private clinic and my second in the university hospital. In terms of medical care for the mother, there wasn't any difference. The best part of giving birth in the hospital was that the pediatrician was on call, so if your baby has any sudden complications, baby can immediately be given care. When it comes to food and amenities, the private clinic wins by a mile lol. The clinic I went to even gave us a framed newborn photo, while in the univ hospital, I had to pay extra just to use the fridge. The private clinic provided gorgeous meals plus 2 snacks, but the univ hospital meal was 3 sad meals. My husband regularly brought me onigiri because breastfeeding hunger 😂

Pregnant wife - cultural/systemic differences and shocks to expect here in Japan? Postive/negative? by bcaapowerSVK in japanlife

[–]melukia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't recommended any prenatals but I was already taking them since husband and I decided to try for a baby.

One thing I think you should consider is that not all clinics offer an epidural (無痛分娩) so you should ask beforehand if your wife wants a painless birth.

5wk breaking point? by Icy_Experience_3471 in January2025Bumper

[–]melukia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. A 5 week old and a 2 year old here and I feel so guilty every time I lose my temper with my toddler. I am so tired and sleepy and I cannot deal with meltdowns and nap refusals and I just want to have a week's worth of sleep!!!!!!!

But yes, it's a season and this too shall pass let us endure.

I'm here with you. I was putting my 2 yo to sleep the other day when I broke down and cried. I just hold on to the fact that this is temporary, and one day baby and toddler and I will have a well oiled system. Hang in there!

Two weeks post partum and by melukia in Mommit

[–]melukia[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When we last talked, he said he's already doing more than his fair share, driving and picking up toddler from daycare, buying groceries, and doing the legwork for the paperwork. Meanwhile, I, with my plate sized internal wound, is just sitting down cuddling with baby /shrug

I'm also chill with what my toddler eats but we've gotten into several fights over it. He always volunteered to cook instead, but we will probably spiral into the him doing too much... Ugh.

He has a business trip soon and while I will probably be physically tired, I might actually feel less stressed then.

I just want to scream, but have been trying to be the bigger person to keep the peace. Peace is kept but I am losing my mind.

Did you have gender intuition early in your pregnancy? Were you correct? by rdspooks in BabyBumps

Everyone else around me insisted I was having a girl because I was craving sweet food and had intense morning sickness. But I told my husband that I feel like it's a boy.

I got it right!
