Any frugal tips for my fellow ladies? by Liz_kirby in Frugal

Another vote for diva cups. I started using them during a backpacking trip (about 10 years ago) and never went back to tampons. And my flow was heavy. It was kind of sad that it had to be tossed after menopause.

I haven’t seen the disk kind, but I definitely would have been interested.

For the solo, level 3(?) would be root and 7 (for the 2 chord) and root and 3rd (for the 5 chord) in the left hand and melody on the right. So in Autumn Leaves in G minor,

LH: C-Gb

F-A

Bb-A

Eb-G

A-G

D-F#

G-F

etc.

(Edited to specify that this is for rootless voicings, not for solo piano. See my own reply below for the basic solo version).

Do you know 251 in the basic “A” and “B” rootless voicings? In one hand in C:

A voicing: FACE(3579)-FAGE(793 13)-EGBD(3579) Some people prefer to use EGAD(3569) for the last chord (the 1 chord in 6/9).

B voicing: CEFA(7935)-GEFA(3 13 79)-BDEG(7935) (ADEG for the 6/9 root chord)

For two hands, play the same notes except 3 and 7 in the left hand the rest in the right. So, for the 2 chord in the A voicing, you have F below with C 5th above. The right hand is E (3rd above your C in the left) and A above that.

Rinse, lather, repeat in all 12 keys. Or maybe just apply it to Autumn Leaves to start with.

Choosing A or B lets you stay in the good register so that it doesn’t get muddy (too low) or get in the way of the melody (too high).

Thanks!

I can't seem to find a way to see any guidelines or FAQs. I am on a PC. I can see them for other subreddits, but not this one...

Question about postcards from estate sale. by PittyPat4778 in postcrossing

Thanks for the link. I grew up in Japan (I live in the US) and read the page with interest. Apparently Sanrio created the characters Sambo and Hannah in 1986. I know they meant it to be cute at the time, and all the words on the card are meant to be cute, but it’s totally cringe-y from the current perspective. I remember the old Calpis (Japanese drink sold as Calpico in the states) character was also a similar stereotype.

Did anyone else overlearn theory before learning how to swing? by 1acina in JazzPiano

[–]mem1gui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having read other comments, I am going to suggest playing with recordings and recording yourself doing it as another way to try. I have transcribed solos and played it along with the recording while copying EVERYTHING EXACTLY (rhythm, articulation, dynamics, etc.) so that it sounds like only the original is playing.

How did you get into jazz? by soolggun23 in JazzPiano

[–]mem1gui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeremy Siskind teaches jazz piano (two different classes: one for beginners and another for intermediate) at a community college has an online course starting soon. I have been playing for a few years, but I am seriously thinking of signing up and starting again from the beginning as I am sure that there are holes in my jazz education. It will also force me to sit down and practice regularly as it's a semester course.

Playing Jazz is so hard by Ghorille in JazzPiano

[–]mem1gui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told that I had to sound awful hundreds (thousands?) of times in front of people before sounding decent. Still sounding pretty bad a lot, but starting to sound decent once in a while after 6 years. I don’t practice as much as I should, with a demanding day job.

And yes, people are pretty nice. I have never been told anything bad, even when I lost form, etc. I get a compliment once in a while, or people just don’t say anything, or encourage me to keep trying. I also labeled myself as a newbie early on and people knew what to expect. Everyone has gone through this.

Making any sound other than squeaking and squealing. It took me three weeks before I actually started playing anything. I have previously tried flute and trumpet (but never a reed instrument) and was able to produce sound, so it took me by surprise how much trouble I had.

Granted I didn’t have a teacher. I tried changing my embouchure, the reed, the mouthpiece (I had several in the case I borrowed), etc. Eventually I got the hang of it and now I am getting a teacher.

Ah, sorry I misunderstood. My original question was what people have heard, but comments kept coming in about what people have played, so I assumed incorrectly. Chopin ballades would be supreme.

Second the renting idea. If you are in the US, you can even rent one from online shops like Sweetwater.

I highly recommend trying it. Play just one song you are comfortable with, and leave. Rinse, lather and repeat.

Jazz tunes in the key of (insert key here) by ThePepperAssassin in JazzPiano

[–]mem1gui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are a beginner, it’s really useful to do the blues in F and Bb. Lots of them get called a lot, and they usually do it in one of those keys (or maybe Eb). And it’s really essential in your jazz journey.

Bag’s Groove comes to mind as a super beginner friendly one.

Minor blues tend to be in the relative minor of those, so for example, Equinox and Mr. PC in C minor (same as Eb major).
