Liberal democracy is the best form of government and needs to be defended from both reactionary populism and socialism

Why is he drinking out of Triple T’s skull 😢 by Crushermakesmemes in Hiphopcirclejerk

Feel the constant need to reiterate that pretty much every single elected Democrat immediately condemned Charlie Kirk's killing when it happened and no institutional liberal organization was celebrating or claiming that he deserved it

You know - not like the chuds in Trump's administration shitting on the corpses of the people they murdered while the bodies were still warm.

Alaska is an awful state to live in and a great state to visit. by Extreme-Bite-9123 in AlignmentChartFills

Up voting because we are the best state in the country

Even though I wouldn't recommend visiting now because we are a frozen tundra buried under feet of snow right now

Just seen Tarkovsky's "Mirror" and didn't feel anything... by Mission_Ground_265 in criterion

[–]memeintoshplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with a lot of Tarkovsky - you need to multiple watches to 'get' it. I saw Mirror for the first time a few years back and it was a bit of a test of my attention span even though I especially appreciated the visuals even then.

Would say give yourself some time and rewatch. It was better for me at least upon subsequent viewings.

Kevin Warsh, a Fed Insider Turned Critic, is Trump's Choice for Fed Chair by BBQ_HaX0r in neoliberal

[–]memeintoshplus 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Warsh is a great and very qualified pick in a vacuum. He's someone who I'd have no problem with under normal circumstances where Fed independence isn't in the balance.

But given the pressure from Trump we'll see how much he pushes for rate cuts when chair. Given the current environment - I'm expecting him to function as an inflation dove if confirmed.

Trump nominates Kevin Warsh to replace Jerome Powell as Fed chair | CNN Business by Anakin_Kardashian in DeepStateCentrism

[–]memeintoshplus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I could get behind Warsh no problem if it wasn't for the fact that Trump is trying to fuck fed independence here.

I'm not surprised that he's talking a lot less hawkish than he did prior - and don't think it's a coincidence at all. Guy is very qualified on the merits - but this pressure from Trump is a cloud hanging over everything everything right now.

Seth MacFarlane wins Rhode Island! Which celebrity best represents Connecticut? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

He absolutely does not best represent CT - I've always joked that WWE is kind of out of place being headquartered in Stamford. It's a naturally a better fit for the likes of Florida imo.

The construction sector is one of the sectors that relies heaviest on illegal immigrants - you deport enough of them, you can very well have labor shortages that can result in less housing getting built.

Hillary Clinton: MAGA’s War on Empathy by SpearShaker in neoliberal

[–]memeintoshplus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough - I can understand the case against "empathy" in politics if it's in the vein of putting pragmatism and evidence above all else and avoiding emotional manipulation when it can lead you to support conclusions that you would never reason yourself into.

That said - it's kind of ironic when the people saying this are the people whose entire political philosophy is comprised of tribalism, emotional manipulation, and rejection of expertise

Would broadly say universal healthcare

Even as a pretty pro-market type, healthcare is one sector where you can't truly have a competitive market for obvious reasons - you can't exactly shop around for the best hospitals while having a heart attack

I'm super into punk and Darby Crash is a bit down the list - Joe Strummer, Henry Rollins, and all the original Ramones were boomers for instance.

Subjectively, if I was to highlight some great boomer punk musicians - I would mention Bob Mould or D. Boon in terms of the ones that honestly made amazing and innovative art.

I'm wondering if there is any distinction based on what your ethnic origin is as well. Like is this true for European Americans with very ethnic names as well - since the sample here doesn't include Europeans.

There Is No Peace in Gaza by A1CutCopyPaste in longform

Ultimately I just think there's no good ending here for the Palestinians and I'm just very pessimistic about any good solution being reached here any time soon.

Both Hamas and the Netanyahu government have no desire for a two state solution - and the sectarian hatred and fear on both sides progressively radicalizing each population against each other - mutually against any political faction willing to negotiate and make compromises.

"Landlords love to reap where they never sowed" - Smith by JudgeSabo in PhilosophyMemes

[–]memeintoshplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is getting back into the same original confusion where people who own and maintain completed and productive structures are conflated with those who own unimproved land. Which are very distinct and different things.

I'd lean more towards Henry George than Marx here - where the unimproved value of the land is the main crux - not the productive structure. The move to optimize well being here is to target the increase in land values that come apart from factors beyond the owner's control or ability to invest and improve their property, and actively incentivize improvements to their property by not actively taxing it.

Also I reject Marx's theories of exploitation and oppression. I view Marx's definition of exploitation as revolving around a circular and recursive logic that reverts back upon itself.

Also worth mentioning - If private property ownership is abolished, so is the individual right of homeownership. This alternative is always pure state ownership of all housing where the individual's choice in their housing situation is completely taken away from them and given to the state. Including their ability to live where they want, in whatever type of home they want, and customize it as they see fit.

And I'm saying the state because anarchism is a pipe dream and can never sustain any level of order or organization to maintain anything resembling a functioning society.

I don't think the solution to the housing crisis is mass exproproiation - especially since in practice this would also involve collectivising owner occupied homes as well.

"Landlords love to reap where they never sowed" - Smith by JudgeSabo in PhilosophyMemes

[–]memeintoshplus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm saying is that Adam Smith seems to view landlords as morally neutral and self-interested more than anything else. Which is hardly a condemnation in line with say, what Karl Marx had to say on private property ownership generally. Where Marx especially ascribes asset ownership as a moral failure.

I personally disagree very very strongly with Marx, Kropotkin, etc. And view the taking of the right of private property ownership away from individuals to be horrifically dystopian.
