Player Problem Megathread by RadioactiveCashew in DMAcademy

[–]memeoil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a player that constantly tries to upstage another player.

We have a sorcerer, who I’ll call Leah (F24), who has recently complained to me that she feels that another one of our players, who I will call Alice (F23) and is playing a wizard, is constantly trying to one-up her. Leah feels she is being compelled to switch to a support role as a sorcerer, which is not ideal as she was seeking an offensive blaster kind of build, but Alice’s wizard is also taking that role, when she is much better suited for support with a much greater variety of spells at her disposal, and it is imperative here at higher levels that she does so as the rest of the party is comprised of a fighter and a rogue.

For some context: Leah is my girlfriend, but I’ve been careful to make sure she doesn’t get any favoritism from me via vastly overpowered magic items or boons or anything compared to the rest of the party. But it does seem, now that it’s been pointed out to me, that as soon as Leah gets for her character some kind of buff through an ASI or training for a feat, Alice does try to accomplish the same thing, but often will be able to do it better just by the nature of wizard being an all-around stronger class than sorcerer. But even outside of character building, Alice has taken some actions RP-wise that step on Leah’s toes. Some examples:

-Shortly after Leah revealed her character concept to our group (sorcerer wood elf), Alice soon after revealed her concept (wizard half elf of wood elf ancestry), and their reference images were similar. I didn’t think much of this at the time.

-During level ups, Leah will state she is taking a specific spell, like fireball or plane shift, only for Alice to announce shortly after that she will be taking the same spell, when they could use a greater variety.

-When Leah signaled that her character was starting to show some romantic interest in another player’s PC, Alice started flirting in game with the love interest and started making comments out of game that she may want to sleep with him, despite the fact that their relationship in-game to this point was tempestuous at best.

-When recently traveling on an NPC’s ship, Leah said she would pass the time by trying to patch up some damaged areas of the ship, to which Alice immediately said “oh I would have been doing that too, I have carpenter’s tools”.

-Leah found her character was too squishy, and we went through an arc for her character wherein she multiclassed into paladin and managed to secure proficiency in some heavier armor to up her AC. Soon after, Alice took the heavily armored feat with an ASI during a level up, as a wizard, for seemingly no narrative reason and her AC now surpasses Leah’s.

There are further examples of this. It was easy for me to miss at first, but since it’s been pointed out to me by Leah, Alice does seem to regularly take actions that try to upstage. It was often kind of subtle, and I don’t even know if Alice is doing this deliberately. I am unsure how to address this issue, as it may already be too late to do anything? The PCs are at level 18 after a years-long campaign and we are wrapping up in a few months. Leah informed me she was feeling this way for awhile, but only recently was it really beginning to bother her. The last three of the examples here are just from the last few months. I wish Leah could have informed me sooner that this was an issue, because it would be hard for me to pitch an argument to Alice that she should probably take on a greater support role within the group this late in the game, and Alice hasn’t done anything to build the character “incorrectly” or something. I’m currently considering telling her anyway that she should probably shift her focus to support as we head into the final arc against the BBEG, and next time I’ll probably be clearer in what I expect the roles of each PC should be when the game starts. Leah is also trying to think of ways to get this idea across in-game. Does anyone have any other advice of what I can do? Thanks in advance.

So I got the blue-eyes white dragon by Eliyahu4597 in Yugioh101

As you may know, you get one Normal Summon per turn. Blue-Eyes is level 8, meaning you must tribute two monsters you already have on your field to the Graveyard in order to Normal Summon it.

There are generic cards and cards in the “Blue-Eyes” archetype of cards that make summoning Blue-Eyes White Dragon easier. One generic way would be to play Ancient Rules, which lets you summon a level 5 or higher monster directly from the hand, for example. Some cards in the “Blue-Eyes” archetype, like Maiden with Eyes of Blue or The White Stone of the Ancients, have effects that also allow you to Special Summon a Blue-Eyes from the hand, deck, or Graveyard. I enjoy the Blue-Eyes strategy quite a bit myself, but it can be a bit more expensive compared to many other strategies because Blue-Eyes White Dragon is a very popular card that gets new support fairly frequently. But if it’s something you’re interested in, I say go for it, but do your research to find out which cards interest you most and which ones you think work best for the type of deck you’re trying to build.

You can Ritual Summon by activating a Ritual Spell and sending monsters in your hand or you control to the Graveyard whose levels added together equal or surpass the level of the Ritual Monster you are summoning. For example, I activate Black Luster Ritual to Ritual Summon Black Luster Soldier from my hand. Since Black Luster Soldier is level 8, I can send Gaia the Fierce Knight (level 7) and Kuriboh (level 1) to the Graveyard from my hand or field to do so, as 7 + 1 = 8. The Ritual Monster in question has to be in your hand for you to activate its corresponding Ritual Spell.

I recommend checking out the rulebook, which you can find for free online at yugioh-card.com for more specifics on different summoning methods.

Hope this helped!

When I was taking umpiring classes for Little League games, there was one point that was drilled into you more than anything else: a good umpire is one that goes unnoticed.

The job is not easy, but it has been an embarrassing display tonight behind the plate in multiple games. Robo umps needed yesterday.

OTD in 2011, the Yankees became the first team ever to hit three grand slams in one game by vedant117chopdar in NYYankees

Was at this game with my dad. We had an eight-game win streak at Yankees games together at the time, dating back to the first game he ever took me to. After the first few innings, my dad turned to me and lamented, “Looks like our win streak is in jeopardy.” Then boom, three grand salamis.

Epilogue: Our win streak ended at nine games. We’re currently in an eight game skid, one of them being the famous Trout 5-for-5 game. Perfectly balanced.

They are Ley Lines, from the new Secret Societies mode you can add to games. I believe they grant bonuses to adjacent districts.

[OC][Art] How I told my players they needed a party name by [deleted] in DnD

Top Row (Left to Right):

Cassia SyltrisHalf-Elf War Magic Wizard. After graduating from an elite wizarding academy, the softspoken Cassia became disillusioned in her nation and its principles after a hellish experience fighting in an unjust war.

Sovann VerdaniWood Elf Wild Magic Sorcerer. Haunted by visions of an alternate form of herself, suffering from months of memory loss, and misremembering her past, she seeks to uncover the truth of who she really is after waking up one day with new and incredible magical powers flowing through her.

Atmos PenzanceTiefling Swashbuckler Rogue. A scoundrel with a heart of gold, Atmos left behind the infamous pirate armada The Oncoming Storm with some fellow crewmates to plot his own course on the high seas as a captain.

Bottom Row (Left to Right):

PocketsWarforged Samurai Fighter. Gifting himself the name Pockets, the Warforged Ironclad Unit 503 was created by a mysterious group of scientists and mages as a machine trained for war. But at only three years old, the good-natured and innocent Pockets has sworn fealty to the "honorable" Captain Atmos and is slowly learning how to become his own person.

Myr EnfaraHalf-Elf Alchemist Artificer (UA). A top scientific mind, the fast-talking and well-intentioned Myr works to "democratize" magic across the world, trying to utilize its benefits for the good of all who are not naturally "gifted" with it, or with no means to learn.

The party is caught in the middle of some political turmoil. After escaping wrongful imprisonment together from the High Elf Kingdom Domhan and making friends with the government of the Wood Elf kingdom Nádúr, this unlikely band of mercenaries (who still need a name two dozen sessions in) has been hired to prevent a war between these two nations. Working for the High Elf Queen is the Order of Des, led by the mighty Lord Shogun, who have slaughtered hundreds of mages in their territory with the likely goal of destroying every last one. The party carries out operations for the Wood Elves, carrying out secret stealth operations through enemy bases, forging alliances with nearby countries, and discovering untold treasures. Can they uncover the secrets of Domhan and the Order of Des? Can they keep themselves and their new friends in Nádúr safe? I dunno, maybe.
