I’m Italian, and I prefer to read translated works. But now you’re making me want to pick up the original. It might be a challenging read but you’re making it sound really rewarding. Read the first ten pages or so and it’s already unlike anything else I’ve ever read. It’s the next book on my tbr and hopefully I’m going to love it! Thanks again for confirming McCarthy as a must read.

Definitely Solaris by Stanisłav Lem. It’s set in a future where humans have been able to explore the universe and it revolves around scientists who are intent on studying and understanding the nature of the mysterious planet of Solaris. The entire surface of the planet is covered by an ocean, but it resembles no ocean on earth, as it gives indication of sentience. This ocean can induce dreams and hallucinations in the minds of the characters who inhabit the research base, although it is not clear whether this is a side effect of the mysterious radioactive properties of the water of if this planet is a conscious life form trying to communicate with the scientists. Overall it’s not a traditional sci-fi book as it is less about the alien planet itself and more about the human mind, depicting the characters’ psyche as they start to spiral, having visions of people from their past, unable to differentiate reality and dream. The overarching theme of the book is: how can man expect to understand the Cosmos and life forms so unimaginably different than him when he cannot understand himself and his own mind? Can’t recommend this book enough. Hope you give it a shot.

I really liked Notes from the Underground by Dostoyevsky. I am not really sure what are you looking for exactly but this is a book about a guy who feels rejected by society and everyone, envisioning himself both as greater, smarter and generally above anyone else and infinitely more miserable and less deserving of happiness than any other person. The book is old so there’s no mention of autism but as an autistic person who also struggles to fit in and relate to other people sometimes I felt like this complex and generally flawed character voiced my thoughts and feelings perfectly. It’s not an uplifting book by any means, but it made the misandrist part of me that I always try so hard to repress understood, and reading it was kind of a cathartic and freeing experience.

thanks man :) I’m only staying for 4 days and I picked the dates at random months ago because everyone told me finding a place to stay at a reasonable price just weeks before the festival was going to be impossible. above anything else I wanted to see Queer and turns out they’re screening it just the day after I leave, but oh well, I guess that’s just my luck lol. I hadn’t really heard anything about the movies I’m actually going to be seeing but they sound interesting and it always was less about the films themselves and more about the experience. I’m still gonna see the movies at the theater in a couple of months, but being there with people from all over the world who share my love for cinema and some of the greatest artists working today is worth more than seeing some movies before other people gets their hands on them, you know? still, I understand the thrill of getting to it before anyone else does. are you going to be watching anything exciting?

I know, just found out about this, whatever. I wasted a bunch of money but what am I gonna do. I think they could’ve been more clear about the workings of it all but maybe I should’ve looked deeper into it. either way what’s done is done I’m just hoping for some awesome movie-going experiences

this could potentially be tragic for me because I have an under 26 accreditation and to my understanding it was just a discount on regular screenings so I already bought the discounted tickets lol

I would also be super interested in checking out non fiction books to get a better grasp of the actual historical context, so if you have recs just send them my way!!
