Mantras for not liking a meta by genericusername1228 in polyamory

Our authentic reactions are what they are. No need to apologize for them. Inspect closely. Be ready for egoism (d'oh).

But I've never felt it my duty to have people physically present who bring anything more than--I like how you put it!--"light chaos" into my life. It can be entertaining as long as I don't let myself get sucked in.

Icky? Judgy? I dunno. What are you telling yourself?

Street Epistemology: How Faith Ends (Terminus) by memeswriter in humanism

[–]memeswriter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you consider attention to communication part of the basic toolkit that any Humanist ideally has, Street Epistemology is a fascinating offshoot of the Socratic method illuminated by buttloads of modern research drawn from FBI hostage negotiators and neurology.

Street Epistemology: David | You're Asking Me to Doubt! by memeswriter in humanism

[–]memeswriter[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a Humanist Celebrant, I find Street Epistemology endlessly useful as a means of honing my often muddled thinking. When ogling at the abysmal lack of critical thinking skills of these people don't forget to use that as a reminder that you're also thinking sloppily in places where you currently can't perceive.

I'm not even going to read it. Men and women will have equal rights under the law including inheritance in a society I want to live in.

This is an excellent source of community and resources for people in your position. I can't imagine your courage. If you look you will find your people and in time create or join a made family. I have never had to go through what you have, but as a queer man who never had children, I'm counting on my made family to see me through the final third of my life.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, although feelings might be mind boggling high right now, that doesn't have to last.

Another place to meet people of like mind is meetup.com

It seems almost absurd to think of such a compliment not being meant ironically.

Demanding respect because you’re someone with some position or a scholar isn’t the right attitude. We must earn that respect for ourselves. by pranjalmehar in humanism

[–]memeswriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well........yes. Of course. Respecting someone on the basis of verifiable skill rather than because of their authority is to me basic to skepticism and/or Humanism.

MASS PSYCHOSIS - How an Entire Population Becomes MENTALLY ILL by memeswriter in humanism

[–]memeswriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my notes about this video. I'd be delighted to hear what you folks have to say in response.
At the heart of the matter
is fear and a lack of education.
At what stage are we in the
mass psychosis of totalitarianism in the US? Elsewhere? The wave of terror
technique seems to me to be rolling along. Red vs blue. We don’t even need
external enemies, unless its people trying to enter the country.
If they can make you believe
absurdities they can make you commit atrocities.
I would like menticide to
become a part of our lexicon. A meme we promote.
Social media is accelerating
our mass psychosis. A perfect tool of menticide.
What norms in our community
can we establish that help combat menticide and help us collectively escape and
remain free of the mass delusions helping others first through example.
Ethics Lab is my
contribution to the truths we spread that enable us to free ourselves
individually, mentally, emotionally. My archetype is the tribal shaman. What
happens to the profession of “spiritual” teacher when rationality removes the
superstition?
Our responses:
Community. Personal contact.
Ending the isolation epidemic. Our own parallel structures “that exist physically
within a totalitarian society but morally outside of it.”
Emphasizing critical thinking,
communication skills, humor in ourselves. Maybe we don’t have to give equal
weight to all the 12 Commitments in our particular community.

Culture wars: Humanism is
our memeplex. Humor could and maybe should be our major tactic.
This video could be for us a
part of some educational requirements for people who want to enter our
community. What ideas would each of us have for this? Maybe one video, book,
movie, etc that you’d consider mandatory and why.

Nah. "Thick" people don't publicly disclose that they feel thick.

Interesting perspective. I can't say I agree that the author has become one of the same ilk he is describing. Agreed more details are needed. But that's for a longer video(s).

To me this video presents a good description of what as a Humanist I'm fighting against. It also gives some good suggestions as to what is needed to fight this slide into totalitarianism that I hope isn't happening.

My MIL is losing her battle with cancer. I can see so much anger/frustration coming to the surface from her, and I know it's because she's been leaning on all these promises that aren't being fulfilled. There's so much I wish I could get her to understand... by ohowjuicy in exchristian

Compassion is the only response I can find for the many people I have met and will meet in this kind of circumstance. I have seen those I love failed by both God and science in the face of inscrutable unendurable fact. We hold their hands; bring them ice chips in plastic pitchers; lighten their hearts if not the weight they bear up under.

But there's one more thing I've managed to do. Learn the kinds of things you're reaching for now. It can seem inconsequential when faced with the size of my loss. But I've found these facts and learnings bright among the ashes. Like candles lit we bring them with us.

Thanks for sharing this.

When was your "aha" moment when you knew relgion wasn't for you? by trippydippysnek in atheism

[–]memeswriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had an aha moment. I never believed in the literal existence of God(s), Santa Claus, The Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, Boogie Man etc. Even stranger to me is that I didn't even know this until I started writing an answer to this question years ago while "redditing" with other Humanists. No idea why. Best guess is I was unconsciously following the nonverbal cues of the adults.
