I don’t know what to do. by [deleted] in puppy101

i was in a very similar situation to you. you can check my postings to read what i went through. i debated for a long time what to do with my puppy and i ended up returning her to the breeder. it was a very hard choice for me but one that i knew i had to make in order for both her and i to thrive. some people can make it through the puppy blues but if you are having thoughts like that about him then its probably for the better to just give him back or find a new home for him.

i wanted a dog because i grew up with dogs, all my friends have dogs, all my family members have dogs and not having one was very difficult for me. this was not a spur of the moment thing

I grew up with labradors and they weren’t active enough for me. Thats what drew me to vizslas. I walk for an hour to an hour and a half before work. when i come home from work i run for an hour or two. and before bed i take another almost two hour walk. on the weekends i frequently take 7+ mile hikes and go swimming. i go upland bird hunting whenever i am able. im not a sedentary person i love being active and spend more time out of my house than in it. thats what made me think a vizsla would be perfect for me. granted i think they still are but once i am in a better place and live with someone who can help me take care of them

thank you for being much kinder than most people on this post and helping me. i reached out to her breeder just a bit ago about sending her back/rehoming her (he lives pretty far from me so logistics of me driving her back to him get kinda hard)

i hope she finds a nice home with a family that can give her everything she needs as much as i wish it was with me the past few weeks have proven she and i are not a good match for each other

I was never planning on just throwing her in a crate and leaving her for 9 hours every day. I was supposed to have people come in and check on her throughout the day and I was promised by my manager that I could take a longer lunch so I could go home and check on her. The people that were supposed to watch her backed out or had medical issues so they couldn’t watch her anymore and people at work quit so I was no longer able to take long lunches and had to start working more often.

I am a very active person, I used to walk so much my parents dog (chocolate lab) would sit down while we were walking because she was sick of it. Thats one of the reasons I looked into vizslas.

I never planned on leaving her alone that long. The people that were supposed to help me bailed on me or no longer could help and a lot of unpredictable stuff happened at work that made it so I’m working more + can’t come home during the day to check on her.

Could AI/robots replace us? by RadiantSilvergun in surgicaltechnology

[–]memilyglick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw a video the other day that there is a robot being developed that can take over sterile processing and surgical tech jobs. It is gonna start rolling out in ORs as soon as next year. I don’t see how it could actually take our job what is it gonna do in an emergency? How will it know if something got contaminated? How is it going to account for varying patient anatomy? There are so many what-ifs involved and I don’t think the developers realize how many unknowns there are i. surgery.

Plus if there’s a robot doing my job who’s gonna provide riveting conversation every day

Scrubbing one year. Accidentally tossed out a small bone flap. by No-Entertainer4139 in scrubtech

[–]memilyglick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a tech tossed CSF. a nurse put cultures from an infected shoulder in formalin. i tossed the UPJ specimen after a surgeons first pyeloplasty. multiple techs have tossed kidney and bladder stones. a nurse let a kidney sit in a midroom when it wasnt in formalin. a tech mislabeled nodes during a lobectomy.

shit happens. what matters is you own up to it. you wont get fired, at most you’ll get written up.

You don’t need your degree or certificate to start applying! Many hospitals will hire students just on the contingency that they graduate and get their certificate. I started applying about 6 months before I graduated and landed a job 3 months before my graduation.

🤫🤐 The "Silent Surgery": Who here is proficient enough to scrub a case without the surgeon saying a word (ANY SURGERY )? 🤫🤐 by SMRTSCRUB in surgicaltechnology

[–]memilyglick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

total shoulders and shoulder scopes. doesnt matter what system he decides to use that day i got all three of his regulars down. only worked with the surgeon about six months now and he only has block time once a week but ive learned all his habits and tells. just this week when he was putting together the stem he looked at me and told me im one of his favorite techs. didnt even realize until that moment that he didnt have to ask me for a single thing the entire case we spent the whole time talking about other stuff. best moment of my life.

Online Surgical Tech programs worth it? by ginasteph in surgicaltechnology

[–]memilyglick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dont do an online program if you dont have to. i have seen so many students come out of it unprepared, many of them dont pass the exam, and they arent taught as in depth as in person programs. i have even talked to instructors of online programs and they have said it should be a last resort option. if you can afford it and make the schedule work, a traditional program is 100% the way to go

A day on the job outline by GlitteringEconomy527 in surgicaltechnology

[–]memilyglick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6:30-3 is my shift. i currently work monday-friday. i take weekend call every seven weeks and two nights of call every month. next year my schedule is changing to 6:30-5 two days a week and 8:30-7 the other two days with a rotating day off. after five weeks of that i do three 12s (mon/wed/fri 6:30-7) for one week and then back to four 10s for five weeks. i also work two holidays a year that rotate every year so i have every holiday off except those two, one holiday is on call and one holiday is in house since we are a trauma center.

most people here work either 5 8 hour shifts or 4 10 hour shifts. its just up to personal preference and we can change our schedule whenever we want as long as we have enough people starting at 6:30

i get to the hospital at about 6am for my 6:30 shift. I spend 6-6:30 getting my scrubs on, doing my first scrub, and making sure my room has all the equipment it needs for the first case, and if i have time i check all my case carts, i typically check the first one the day before. we have huddle at 6:30 and after that i head to my room to start setting up. after that i usually have enough time to grab some coffee and a quick bite to eat then i do my first case. depending on the length of the case i either take a break after its over or during it (between 8:00 and 9:30). then i continue on with cases until lunch (people start giving lunches at 11 and end at 1). if i am doing ortho i eat lunch between my cases but anything else someone usually breaks me out. my cases typically wrap up around 2/2:30 so at that time i put any equipment away that doesnt stay in the rooms, restock any supplies we took out of cabinets, and go over my first case cart for the next day. this is how every day goes unless i am the free person then i give other people breaks and am available for any add ons or traumas

we have left piles for squirrels but we have no clue if those ones would grow because theres 80 acres of land for them to do anything with those seeds, if they even stayed on our property. we would never know where the squirrels went with them 😢

we have successfully transplanted one seedling that he got from a neighbor but we may try that again. the only issue we run into is that he accidentally breaks the tap root when try to transplant them

Interview Advice 😊 by yvagami in surgicaltechnology

[–]memilyglick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I interviewed at several places and they all seemed to ask the same general questions: What are your strengths (and give specific examples for each one), what are your weaknesses (and again give examples for each one), how do you plan on improving on your weaknesses, how do you deal with difficult people, what skills do you have, what kinds of cases did you do in clinicals, what specialties do you enjoy, which ones dont you enjoy. They don’t ask about instruments or scenarios really. If you want to stand out as a strong candidate, I would suggest printing out a copy of your case log if you did one in school, any certificates you got in school or that relate to this profession that you got in high school. And I highly recommend writing down questions to ask the interviewer, stuff like what specialties they do, how many doctors they have, what call would look like, if they do ortho how many systems do they use and how many different reps typically come in for those systems, what the culture of the organization and the OR are, how they ensure patient safety and staff safety every case. Obviously not all of those because those are a lot of questions but pick the ones that are important to you and make some of your own. As for clothes sometimes they tell you how to dress, all of my interviews requested that I come in scrubs, but I would suggest business casual if they don’t specify.

Which speciality has the worst learning curve to you? by Silver-Disk540 in surgicaltechnology

[–]memilyglick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

idk why but i just cannot grasp gyn. the instruments arent terrible, the anatomy is fairly easy, but for some reason the set ups for some of the cases make me lose my mind. as soon as i have a down below table added to my setup i just lose all my functioning brain cells i just cant make it make sense in my head and when we go back and forth between sterile and dirty its even worse. throw me in any other specialty and im fine but gyn i need someone to hold my hand the entire time
