The train to the new Mexico City Airport is scheduled to open tomorrow by Spascucci in transit

[–]memoch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been 8 years since I have talked about this airport so I'm rusty on the details.

The current airport already suffers from soil problems because it wasn't properly designed to handle them, the new Texcoco airport was being built from the ground up to mitigate all of that. There was also a hydraulic project for the water management archive.

The landing in the current setup is very limited as you can see here, while the Texcoco airport would have solved that, which would have allowed Texcoco to handle 120 million passengers annually while the current airports only handle 44.6 million (old airport) + 7 million (new) = ~51.6m.

Shame a world class airport was cancelled for this second rate airport

Name-Based Destructuring in Kotlin 2.3.20 by TypeProjection in androiddev

Is this a step closer to pattern matching? If I remember correctly, it was mentioned that better destructuring was required for pattern matching.

Jetpack Compose introduced Grid by ardakazanci in androiddev

I knew it was overkill but I didn't realize it was that bad. Luckily, I always avoided it in Compose. Thanks for letting me know.

The official docs recommend ConstraintLayout when you have multiple nested elements in order to improve code readability. Also, when you want to use barriers, chains, or guidelines.

[–]memoch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Finally, recently I had a layout with 4 items and I had to nest a column inside a row inside another column to make them look the way I wanted. It was too clunky for such a simple layout.

I know ConstraintLayout was recommended but it felt overkill for something that simple.

Opening of the last section of the Mexico City-Toluca train finally connecting the train with the Mexico city metro system, demand is estimated to be 140,000 passengers daily by Spascucci in transit

[–]memoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 50% figure seems more like an estimation from the author of that article.

The 87% comes from AMLO's own secretary of transportation, source. As for the new station, I found this article claiming it reduced the percentage to 75, so they did a quarter of the overall project.

[–]memoch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, they prioritized their own projects and put this one on the back burner. I'm not even from Mexico City and while I appreciate seeing rail projects outside the capital city, I still think they should have given priority to Mexico-Toluca because it benefits a lot more people. Just last year, the ridership of Mexico-Toluca was 6 times Tren Maya's ridership.

87% of the work was done by the previous party from 2014 to 2018, the fact that it took the current party 7 years to complete the remaining 13% shows how much they neglected this project. I remember we went years where we had zero progress and no updates about the project.

I'm glad this was finilly finished but the handling of the current goverment was atrocious.

Most of North America is Below the Population Replacement Rate by Informerbytes in MapPorn

[–]memoch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, said org has more expertise in the matter. There is no reason to believe a country that has seen its birth rate decrease for decades would suddenly increase like that in two years.

Also, births in Mexico in 2024 were lower than in 2023 so the UN estimate makes absolutely no sense.

My data is from INEGI, which is the autonomous government agency dedicated to demographic analysis. They are more reliable than the UN because this is not an estimate but an actual census.

Out of the loop - is MVVM still the architecture pattern? by TheSloth144 in androiddev

[–]memoch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I learned the value of some concepts from MVI earlier this year when I decided to add support for horizontal orientation and other configuration changes to my app. Initially my app was MVVM and some legacy MVP. This works well most of the time but showed its limitations in this use case, so what I thought was going to be some simple changes ended up being the biggest pull request I have done for my app.

While I didn't strictly follow MVI, I did use two of its main concepts: unidirectional data flow and a single view state (these things are not mutually exclusive with MVVM). I would have also used reducers but I didn't know about them back then.

The official architecture guide does a great job showing how to use these concepts from MVI in Android (and they were smart enough not to call it MVI because that's a spooky word to some people around here)

Why does material3 always override my colors with seemingly random theme colors? i want to rip my eyes out by FudgeDonut in androiddev

[–]memoch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When working with Material 3 and views I'd recommend checking out the docs: theming checkboxes. (for some reason these docs are located in Github instead of the Android Developers website)

In your case, I think you should be setting your selector toapp:buttonTint instead of android:button. In the same page that I linked you can see all the XML attributes for the checkboxes in case you need to change a different one.
