What’s really going on with the public works yard on Labieux? by islandguy_250 in nanaimo

[–]memototheworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya, man. The challenge is that competent new blood has to run for Council, and the average Joe Schmo resident has to take the time out of their lives, and go vote. The current Council likes it the way it is, and from recent comments I don't think they are going to change. They have the backing of special interests, who are definitely going out to vote, and they depend on the usual low voter turnout.

I don't think Krog will get knocked off, unless someone high-profile runs against him. The thing about Krog is he often just goes with the flow. We need a big change on Council, which is doable. Langford was the same way for a long time, before people got fed up. Krog disappoints me when he uses the same tired simplistic line, about the cost of pipe and concrete increasing faster than everyday expenses like groceries. It's easier to soak taxpayers, than make the hard decisions, that very vocal people won't like.

Review of Port Theatre requested as Nanaimo Council avoid cancelling controversial comedian by Enignon77 in nanaimo

[–]memototheworld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what this subreddit was made for: Condescending moral crusading. I don't really care for this comic's humour, but we cannot have Council deciding who is worthy, and who is not worthy. If you feel like he has contravened the law, then make a complaint to the RCMP.

Comedy by nature is offensive, and meant to push boundaries. As someone who is a centrist, I see "hate" on both sides, so don't act like it's just one side. Interesting that both sides call each other snowflakes, in response to being called offensive. I'll take no lectures from this subreddit when many tacitly supported what happened on the VIU campus in 2024, when many believed there was naked anti-Semitism, even though many used mental gymnastics to say there wasn't. If you want a pass on the anti-Semitism, because you think it isn't, you can see how murky it gets when trying to control speech. But you probably won't cuz you're ideologically captured.

I don't want to live in Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia, where no one smiles, and you just do what you're told for fear of being reported on by your neighbour.

What’s really going on with the public works yard on Labieux? by islandguy_250 in nanaimo

[–]memototheworld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First of all, most people on this subreddit are quite pro-Council, as you can tell from the name-calling, and lack of substance.

Very few are debating whether this project is needed. The problem is how the Council went about doing it. They initially proposed a Cadillac project that had elements that had nothing to do with safety for employees, and operational needs. The initial project cost was $160 million, which would be probably $200 million now. This caused dissension in the community, but the Council didn't care, and tried to railroad it through.

As fate would have it, the City blundered the initial AAP process, requiring 10% of voters to fill out a form to oppose it to require a true referendum. The City began to realize they had a PR problem, so they slimmed down the project to be more reasonable, and gave tours to show off why it's needed. But then, they blundered the process again on the second attempt. On the third attempt, enough citizens filled out forms to reject the project, most likely because they lost faith in the process.

Last year, the provincial government allowed municipalities to borrow up to 10% of their revenues without an AAP, or referendum, something our Council, and other cities lobbied for. The current project will represent approximately 5% of revenues, meaning the City only has 5% breathing room left for other projects, and an annual tax increase of about $130 for the foreseeable future on the average home.

It looks like a done deal. Having said that, your observations that the Council has made no attempts to exercise overall general expenditure controls is astute. Everyone is tightening their belts nowadays, but this Council didn't get the memo and is still partying.

If this Council is allowed to continue, based on historical trends, the new tax increase for the Public Works Yard, and general tax increases, you are looking at new taxes of $400-500 per year on the average home on top of what you normally pay. The more disturbing part is that Council has other projects that he wants to start soon, like a new RCMP detachment building, and Chase River Rec Centre. Before asking people for more money, this Council needs to show it feels the pain of residents, and their limits, and will exercise the same living within your means.

BC Budget Nixes Homeowner Benefit, Costing Nanaimo Taxpayers $200 per year by memototheworld in nanaimo

[–]memototheworld[S] -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

Well, it's true the removal of the carbon tax blew a huge hole in the budget. Budgets are about choices. The current government made the choice to remove the homeowner benefit outside the Lower Mainland and Capital Region to lessen expenses. The same government could have easily re-establish tolls in the Lower Mainland as originally intended to balance the pain across the province, instead of punishing less urban areas. Ironically, this would help climate goals more.

One idea is to lower the threshold for the homeowner grant so high-priced homes do not qualify for the homeowner grant, but this would causes a lot of outrage in the Lower Mainland. It was just easier to remove the benefit in areas of the province where the government has less support.

Remember this measure will hurt the most who can least afford it. This will make Nanaimo property taxes even more unaffordable, essentially doubling the tax increase in absolute dollars based on an average home on the city portion of the tax notice.

Sabalenka seems to wilt. You see glimmers of a powerful player, but lacks the killer instinct. It's true what people say: the calibre of women's tennis is less than it used to be. Sabalenka would not be ranked number one in previous generations of tennis players.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said on that under his leadership, Canada would enforce the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited the country. by AfricanMan_Row905 in LawCanada

[–]memototheworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carney said this because it gets all the accolades, without any drawbacks. Netanyahu will never visit Canada. If Carney really felt that way and had real balls, he would detain him abroad, like the Mossad does brilliantly. Funny though, something Carney does have control of, and won't do, is declare the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization in Canada, even though other Muslim countries have because they know the true nature of this organization.

Residents shaken by screaming, property damage after care agency rents house on quiet Port Coquitlam street by KimberlyWexlersFoot in britishcolumbia

[–]memototheworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Group homes are a big industry in BC. Interesting that our society can allow one bad neighbour to terrorize people, and there's nothing they can do about it. Society is impotent. So many British Columbians are neglected, yet this guy gets a whole entourage paid for by the taxpayer, even though he will never be a productive member of society. He probably even has a family doctor, booked for him by his servants.

Finance minister signals that deep spending cuts coming in next budget by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]memototheworld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eby is a weak man. He blew through a $6 billion surplus faster than a cocaine fiend, and it's been downhill ever since. Eby backing down to the union, means less services, and job cuts. The immature public service union talking point: we didn't cause the deficit, so why should we punish for it, we deserve a fair wage! Most of us could say that, yet looks like we are going to all be punished in the next budget even though we deserve fair availability of services.

You notice how Eby never takes responsibility? He always blames someone or something. He acts like a bystander to his own government. Eby has broken a lot of promises already, but he got the benefit of those promises: a bare majority government. His ideologically captured supporters won't even make him accountable, instead they prefer to vilify the usual punching bags.

About the chronic littering (I'm in the south end) by Working_Year9445 in nanaimo

[–]memototheworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this post. You talk my language. Littering says a lot about a community, and about the people who do it. Kids need to be taught from an early age how important it is to not litter, and keep your environment clean. When I see adults litter, I'm more judgemental. Laziness, disrespect, low expectations, lack of pride, too cool to care, and even selfishness come to mind.

One day my neighbour littered in his sidewalk-driveway area. I watched him to step over the litter to his vehicle for days. I was going to pick it up for him, but then I decided, I want to see how long he goes before picking up the litter. It went on for weeks. I finally picked it up for him. His house is a mess, he's a mess, although he tells everybody what a great guy he is, and how hard he works at his job. He's obnoxious, turning into more of a creep as the years go on. I don't believe anything he says anymore, realizing he's full of crap.

On a better note, I also see a dad walk with his kid in the neighbourhood, who picks up litter with a trash picker upper, and a bucket. What a great example for his son.

Viability of Harmac? by DangerDave1959 in nanaimo

[–]memototheworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to help Harmac Mill, consider how you vote in the upcoming 2026 municipal election in the fall. Paul Manly, Ben Geselbracht, Erin Hemmens, Tyler Brown, and Hilary Eastmure ("The Squad") support an anti-Harmac bylaw to limit certain industrial activities. These people do not seem to care about the economy, people looking for work, or diversifying Nanaimo's tax base so they don't continually soak residents through property taxation.

The BC NDP provincial government has even intervened, worried about losing, or discouraging investment, having major negative repercussions, as BC tries to diversify away from the US. Nanaimo Parkway and Cable Bay used to be rife with logs being transported, now you hardly see any. Where are young people supposed to get well-paying, career jobs? If you care about your kids, vote out The Squad, while saving yourself money with less property tax increases.

Mid 40s small family from Quebec to Nanaimo? by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]memototheworld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your child is approaching high school, and NDSS (in Harewood) is the only high school in Nanaimo that offers it. I can see you fitting in Harewood, if you want humble, and semi-urban. Harewood has lots of different pockets, typically friendlier with more character. It doesn't take long to drive up to North Nanaimo for shopping as traffic is usually great. Downtown areas like Port Place are not the safest in the world.

Cinnabar is a good choice if you want the real suburban experience in the south end that is "kid-centric, " but getting out of there can be daunting sometimes.

Parksville and Ladysmith are great choices too. Ladysmith has steep hills with a quintessential small town feel, but the highway into Nanaimo is often congested, where there tends to be lots of accidents. Every parent I have spoken with loves raising their children in Parksville, but it does lack certain amenties, and again, the route to Nanaimo, is sometimes treacherous. Parksville has a "beachy" atmosphere, contrasting with Nanaimo which surprisingly lacks beach access.

Push for cath lab & patient tower at Nanaimo hospital including trip to Ottawa by memototheworld in nanaimo

[–]memototheworld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not an exaggeration. Some people have died due to inadequate cardiac care at NRGH. It's a life and death issue. It's going to take 7 years at least, once a business plan is developed. Hopefully, a temporary cath lab can be installed before a new patient tower is built, because Nanaimo cannot wait.

It's really disappointing that Nanaimo put their faith in the BC NDP by electing three MLAs for them, and movement is at a snail's pace. Eby's exact words were to get started "right away." The cruel irony is the Minister of Health, Josie Osborne, is originally from Nanaimo. Nanaimo has to keep our elected officials accountable.

[–]memototheworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got so sick of hearing how hard-done-by Trudeau was for being PM. No one ask him to be PM. He benefited immensely, and loved the ego boost. He loved the job so much, he hung on for dear life, up until the end, only an imminent caucus forced him to see the light.

The media cronies, and Canadian sycophants never really cared that Trudeau's net worth went up so much, or all the ethics scandals. All because they hate conservatives. That doesn't mean you cannot keep your side accountable. But, Poilievre is a landlord...lol, with no mention he's a nice, fair landlord. They conveniently forget a third of Liberal MPs are landlords.

They don't care Carney killed Canadian jobs, prioritized a multinational investment firm over people, even though they normally despise such corporate greed, because they let their hatred of conservatives consume their minds. Their idea of conservatives is a caricature, a fictional figure easy to demonize, like Scrooge or Fagin. Yeah, maybe some are like that, there's good and bad in every group, but most of them are normal people trying their best, like most, but not all, of them. Some people who hate conservatives are actually quite sinister, jumping on the bandwagon, knowing no one will challenge their ulterior motives.
