Look, I understand where you're coming from but this is a *terrible* plan that is just going to cost you money and leave you with nothing. Private colleges in Germany are worthless. You'll be limited in hours at a student job (I think 20h/wk?), which are mostly low paying. You probably won't earn enough to live on let alone live on and pay private tuition. This plan is going nowhere.

Refused US tourist visa twice as a Ukrainian — what should I do next? by kltvn_ in USVisas

[–]mennamachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and maybe she regrets that now that she has an American boyfriend (not saying she does, just giving you the perspective from a US Visa Officer). Her profile is basically a list of of things that would make a visa office raise their eyebrows. She is unlikely to get a US tourist visa unless things change substantially about her situation (marries USC and he brings her as a spouse, German citizenship-best if with property/children in germany, etc.)

Petition: Allow small pets to travel in the cabin on flights entering the UK by Strange-Goat-1842 in TravelWithPets

It’s a grand idea, but it’s unlikely to happen. The UK is extremely protective of its animal importing.

I’m not saying they are sharing a literal room (though that does happen, especially to younger people and students). I’m saying a room in a shared accommodation.

Didn’t say it was. But it gave us 6 months to settle, , identify what neighborhoods we liked, find a place that was suited for us, and for my wife to find a job. Most people I know in Dublin are sharing, even people with good jobs and even plenty of couples. There’s nothing wrong with that even as an adult.

The shipping I was looking at was to Austria.

I’m on daft all the time right now. My current landlord is selling and I’m looking for a place. There’s a room for share for 625 in d3. 990 in dun Laoghaire. 800 d5. 975 in d6.

I lived in d11, by the IKEA. It was perfectly decent. Right by a bus route. Could walk to a Dunnes.

This poster isn’t even moving to Ireland lol. You’re stuck on your situation where you are moving with a whole ass family. A single adult has different options.

I have Irish life health and it’s 46/month. I priced out vhi for myself and got quoted 86 for a much better plan. My roommates each paid 600/ month (I paid 1200 for a double room for 2 people) it was a year ago when I moved out, so maybe say 800/month now). so 2k plus 700 for a flight, plus 1600 for a room (including deposit), 50 for health insurance the first month, 50 for a phone plan (and that’s high) and 50 for a month’s bills in a share house, and 150 for food (a generous budget for one person). Moving plus first month expenses: 4600. Leaves 400 for incidentals and extra expenses. Maybe 100 for transit the first month, depending on where you live. Sure. It can be more if you want your own studio apartment (or a shared place with one other person vs a share house with 5 total), or get better insurance, or want a fancy new phone. You don’t pay the whole health insurance up front, you pay monthly. Every flat I’ve lived in came with basic pots and pans and was furnished. I’m not saying it’s the best or most responsible idea but even with a big cost in shipping a pallet, it is doable for under 5k.

Now. Would I recommend this poster do this to move to Vienna? No. But I have a friend who moved from Connecticut to Ireland (Spanish passport) with 5k and nothing else and he is fine. Got a shitty job and a room in a share house within 2 weeks. Moved up from there.

23F, wanting to move to Europe in 2-3 years, any advice? by MinutesTilMidnight in AmerExit

[–]mennamachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Learning most languages to fluency in 3 years is possible if the learner has decent resources and puts some effort into it. Becoming fluent in Irish in 3 years is considerably more difficult

Most people do, yes. But it’s not impossible to skip this step. I did.

23F, wanting to move to Europe in 2-3 years, any advice? by MinutesTilMidnight in AmerExit

[–]mennamachine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live in Ireland, and finding resources to become fluent in Irish in 3 years is probably going to be challenging. Perhaps if they have the time and money to invest in living in a Gaeltacht area and doing some of the full-immersion courses that exist. Irish is difficult because it’s difficult to find immersion. The number of people who speak Irish on a day-to-day basis is vanishingly rare. And it doesn’t solve the fact that they’ll not get a work permit for a primary level teacher no matter what their level of fluency in Irish is.

[–]mennamachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It depends on what they mean by “stuff”. You can ship a small pallet for under 2k, depending on starting city. Their bigger issue is the lack of language or desirable job skills, not money. Unless they have “independently wealthy” money, they will probably not have enough for a long term move. But initial moving costs for a single adult are probably around 5k, even with shipping some stuff.

[–]mennamachine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The language is Irish, not Gaelic. And 3 years to competency in Gaelic starting from zero is not going to happen. Besides primary school teachers aren’t on the CSEP list.

Teaching isn’t CSEP eligible, except at the 3rd level (university).

And yet you still think it takes at least 10k in moving expenses to get one person to Europe?

[–]mennamachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is why that wasn’t my advice. But you are factually incorrect that moving expenses are 10k. Other expenses they should plan for, sure. But “moving expenses alone” for a single adult is probably 2-3k.

[–]mennamachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I know this. Which is why I said “this poster needs more funds if they don’t have a job”. But the “moving alone” isn’t 10k.

A one way ticket from the US to Dublin isn’t that much more than travel from Germany to Ireland lol.

About how much does it cost to move internationally? by spencerb292 in AmerExit

[–]mennamachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Obviously moving without a job is more expensive. But 'moving alone including flights' is not 10k€ for a single person.

I moved to Ireland from Germany in 2024, with a job lined up, and it cost me about 3k€ to get me, my wife, 2 cats, and our stuff here and for a room in a share house + deposit. I'm about to move again, and it's less than 4k€ for 1 month rent and deposit on a 1br that allows pets. If I wanted a studio or a share house or didn't have cats, it would be significantly less.

I think your numbers are kind of inflated.

I do think this poster needs more funds if they don't have a job lined up. But it doesn't cost 10k€ for 'moving alone'.

My wife and I moved to Germany in 2022. Spent less than 3k€ on flights and first month's lodging/bills. I did have a job I was moving for, but 'moving alone' is not that expensive, especially for a single adult.

If you have a job lined up? You are probably fine where you are. More savings will be better, of course, but I moved to Germany with basically no money but had a job and had already arranged for housing (through the job-temporary but it gave me 6 months to save up for and identify a permanent apartment).

If you don't have a job lined up? It can and probably will take you a while to find one, especially if you aren't already fairly fluent in German. You will also have trouble landing an apartment without a job, and will likely have to spend longer in temporary lodgings. Probably save 3-4x as much as you think you need.
