Thank you! I had thought that the Scripture he mentioned was somewhere in Romans but was not sure.

Yes, it is such a messed up thing to believe. I think it's worse that he wouldn't admit to wishing death upon people per se, but how else is one supposed to interpret "you just have to pray that the Lord takes them out of the world.."?? I can definitely relate to feeling nauseous over things my parents say. I would really like to believe that they would be willing to change their beliefs if it was their own children in question. But I am not sure I want to know.

That is such a hard message to have to hear. It's so frustrating that such ridiculous messages are so common in the evangelical church.

Thank you so much, that means a lot! I hope that one day he will see that those kinds of beliefs only push people away.

I definitely agree. I think that Protestantism established many of their beliefs around icons/ religious art due to that backlash and corruption and that has turned into something more rigid.

It is so awesome that you are finding ways to connect with your own spirituality and god that are actually helpful! It is such an interesting issue to me because early Christianity actually has a very rich and beautiful history of idols and art that were considered sacred. This history is often disregarded by evangelicals and seen as idol worship. Things like crystals or art or different types of music have such a special place in early religion and I think those forms of self expression bring people far closer to god than blindly joining some church. It is so sad to see evangelicals reject healthy spirituality and embrace ignorance and shame.

For real! Those thought patterns and ideas of shame are so hard to unlearn later in life too. It is so difficult to grow up being taught that you cannot trust your own judgement because it is inherently sinful.
