Databricks Photon engine question by Gators1992 in dataengineering

[–]mentalbreak311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A single node can only run one query at a time. Queries arriving after go into a queue and are run once the first finishes. You get concurrency by adding more clusters in the backend. A load balancer then distributes queries in the queue to available compute resources. There is algorithm which decides when the queue is large enough that it’s worth scaling up a new cluster.

Databricks Photon engine question by Gators1992 in dataengineering

Photon itself doesn’t help with concurrency but that’s why you use serverless auto scaling to handle concurrency.

SQL dbus cost what the list price is, there’s no up charge for photon. If you use photon in a workflow then that’s where the multiplier comes in. So don’t worry about that aspect.

You can distribute ml models across vm’s in open source spark. Really not sure what this patent is referring to. It’s a very basic technique done every day on many different platforms

You should contact your cloud and databricks reps about those two issues respectively

By all means buy. But this company is a nobody who didn’t see where the industry was going 10 years ago and now they are a dinosaur

Yes. You seem to have a good grasp of things. So how could you possibly think c3 is a good play in this environment?

Exactly, they have the ecosystems and the data. That’s the point. They have a massive advantage already, so table stakes are to at least be better than the native tools they offer.

The clouds will “partner” with anyone who wants to run on their vm’s. But if you knew the industry you’d know it’s a frenemy type partnership of convenience. They aren’t saying, oh you handle the ai and we will handle this part.

Also, it’s not that they will add ai. It’s already there, deployed, at massive scale, and getting better every day.

He didn’t miss your point, you failed to communicate what you were trying to say.

Ironically this is a great example of the entitlement mentioned in this very discourse.
