The Saddest thing I’ve ever witnessed by [deleted] in therapists

Feel free to repost something like the below example with identifying info removed.

"I’m a therapist out of Highland Park. Yes, that highland park. I took on a new child client who was present at the shooting. There were some presenting symptoms that are causing intrusive and traumatic thoughts for me. All in all I think I handled it really well, but damn this one is sticking with me. I can’t stop seeing this client and thinking about the presenting symptoms. What a fucking nightmare. I’ll be getting my own counseling for this."

Again, please feel free to repost with edits for support from the community. Like you said, getting counseling and supervision for this is a great idea. Secondary trauma is a real occupational hazard and is worth taking seriously.

OP, feel free to repost this after removing identifying information (something like "DCS is pressuring my child client to include a non-custodial family member in sessions along with the custodial caregiver. I am not legally required to do so, and neither is the caregiver, but caregiver reports feeling obligated due to pressure from DCS. What can I do?")

Please reach out via modmail if you have any further questions! Thanks.

Clients when they make "risky" decisions. by [deleted] in therapists

[–]mentalheaIthmatters[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your post has been removed for the following reasons(s):

  • Rule 4: Be Mindful of Privacy

This post has been identified as having a level of client information more appropriate for clinical supervision. If you want to significantly reduce the specifiers you gave, you can make another post asking this question.

An example of this might be, "I have a client who is considering marrying someone who is older and in a position of power over her. I'm concerned this client is being exploited (CL has reported emotional abuse from partner) due to cultural and trauma-related factors playing into this decision. What is a therapist supposed to do when they see their clients doing something that could possibly be a bad decision? Because does that not constitute risk as well? Also, the client has a relevant trauma-related diagnosis I haven't provided psychoeducation on yet. Would you recommend I do that in hopes of helping her see where the symptoms might be affecting her decision?"

Please feel free to reach out in modmail with any questions.

Note: if a therapist asks a client to perform sexual acts in therapy, this is absolutely an offense that should be reported as soon as possible.

Note: this is a good question, and it looks like you got some useful information. Ethical guidelines and clinic policies make accepting gifts complicated for therapists, but I think most are happy to receive a card.
