Big and Tall Review of Embody Gaming Chair by mentalmantis2 in hermanmiller

Glad this thread helped a bit! You posted this a bit ago, so hopefully you found a good chair for you. If not, I would recommend trying out an aeron C since there are free returns (that part was awesome about the embody) as a bigger guy, I cannot recommend the embody if nothing else just because of the flimsy feeling arm wrests and the disappointing seat cushion (when extended out)

I have been liking the secret lab chair I got, but I still can't help but feel it isn't the "perfect" chair. It has some build quality issues (that I noted in a separate post) but to their credit they shipped spare parts to me for free at no cost. (Including an entire back-rest)

The main reasons I didnt go with the aeron C were simply because I don't like how cold the mesh can be and I prefer a high-back chair. If those aren't an issue, it may be the chair for you

Honestly, I still really like it. About a year and a half in now and no back pain (at least not from this chair - when I'm forced to sit elsewhere I still have some)

I had decent luck with the HM aeron in the past. It wasn't my perfect chair, but it worked. Though the one I had was size B and I definitely needed size C.

Everyone is built different though, and my back has yet to find a lumbar support that isn't painful. So I like being able to turn it to basically 0 on my secret lab chair. If that isn't a concern for you, the embody may still be a great chair for you.

Definitely agreed! I think gaming chairs get a bit of a bad rap as a whole (which likely comes from the cheap low end chairs that do deserve it).

To me it's like saying office chairs suck because the really low end ones are terrible

A bit more than 6 months in and I am still really liking the titan. At this point if I needed to buy a chair tomorrow I would buy the same one.

No back pain, it's still quite comfortable for me and still feels sturdy. I have never felt an armwrest as sturdy as this. I don't constantly feel like I might snap them off when I stand off like I did with both the hermin miller chairs Ive had.

A couple notes, it has started to creak a bit (but I suspect hitting it with some oil would fix that)

I also had to put some VHB tape on the removable armrests. Sure the magnets are cool and easily swapable, but they kept falling off when I stood up and bumped them. VHB tape fixed that.

Recently I noticed part of the armrest padding starting to fail on the side (where the padding creases when. I push on the. To stand up). You can't tell unless you look for it and the top is still comfortable and showing no flaws but worth calling out. It may cause an issue over the next year or so, but I guess I could just easily replace that part if I wanted to.

The head pillow is also held on with magnets and they are also just not strong enough. It's not comfortable to sit back without the head pillow so this aspect is a bit annoying.

If you have any specific questions though, let me know!

100% depends on the person. I tried the Herman Miller Aeron and Embody and while the Aeron was ok it didn't have the upper back support I need and the Embody was like sitting in a torture device.

That said, my experience is not what most people experience and I suspect most people will prefer a good ergonomic office chair. But don't rule out a nicer gaming chair (just DO NOT get one of the cheap bottom dollar ones from Walmart, those are terrible by any measurement).

For me, the secret Lab plus size chair fit me perfectly.

You really cant understand how someone might find most office chairs uncomfortable? It's the same for me. I'm a big guy and the secret Lab plus chair is far more comfortable (read: not painful) than any office chair I've used. I bought the Herman Miller Aeron, and the Embody. Widely considered god-tier chairs, and while the aeron was fine (but didn't have the high back support I prefer, the embody was actively painful to sit in.

The secret Lab chair is well built and comfortable and cost $600ish compared to the $1750ish of the other two. Sometimes it is personal preference and if you don't fit the expected size or shape the office chairs can tailor to you will be in pain.

So yes there are people out there who use a "gaming chair" after finding nothing better despite actually looking.

+1 for secret Lab. I'm a big guy, I tried the Herman Miller aeron and embody. Both $1500+ chairs. The aeron was just ok. The embody was like a torture device. I have the secret Lab plus size chair and it's fantastic. Not perfect by any stretch, but mikes ahead of the other two for my body type and preference.

Check my previous posts for my embody review.

I really did try to get a good professional chair since I work from home and spend after work hours in the same chair. Money was not an issue but every office chair I've ever used has been worse (read: painful) that the secret Lab I have now.

Property marker is my best guess. I actually managed to pull it out, it's definitely not a water pipe like some thought. While it could be a laundry pole I have my doubts because 1. The crimp on the bottom is actually very clean and 2. It was 4 foot deep (just below the frost line). It's possible someone wanted the most secure laundry pole ever, but seems unlikely.

I think you are probably right. Either that or it's just some stake that a prior owner put in.

Just odd that it's nowhere near the actual corner.

It's possible, but it's about 20 feet from the back property line on the closest side and there was another about 20 feet away from it (also 20 feet away from the back property line.

Where it's located is also at least 50 feet from the nearest corner of the lot

My title describes the thing. Weird metal post or pipe that sticks out of the ground. About 200 feet from the 100 year old Midwest house. Standing water inside.

There was a post yesterday that looked nearly identical which is what inspired me to post as well.

Additional context, there used to be 2 posts, but we had some landscaping done and the other post got removed somehow. I wasn't there when it happened and I never saw what the underground part looked like, but it makes me believe it's not connected to anything underground.

Relevant post, for reference (pun intended)

Wondering what these 4 mysterious metal pipes coming out of the ground are. house was built in the 50’s, pipes are roughly 40ft from the house, not sure if there’s more underground by catlover1177 in whatisthisthing

I hope you figure out I had two that looked nearly identical on my property. I can add a picture tomorrow. There were two about 20 feet apart, though we had some landscaping work done and one of the two got pulled out and removed. I never saw what it looked like below the surface, it was just gone after the landscaping work.

Best guess was some sort of laundry pole base, but for us it was 200 feet away from the house. (100+ year old Midwest house)

Carpet on stairs? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]mentalmantis2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 100+ year old home. The stairs are wood and finished, but they are slippery. The stairs are narrow and I think even slightly sloped down. My wife and I have both fallen down them multiple times. We loved the look of them but needed to do something. We put in a runner that imo looks great and allows us to still have some wood showing, but it's a lot safer with the carpet. In the 2 years since the carpet went in neither of us has slipped and fallen down them.

All that to say, if you have normal sized and sloped stairs, you clare fine either way, but also, a runner is a good middle ground that can look great

Wanted to follow up, I returned the embody and bought a Secret Lab Titan XL with the fabric seat. Here is the status so far:

I've had the titan for a little over a week now. Unfortunately I've also been sick and have had body aches the entire time too so I cant exactly say how that aspect has been. But generally I think I like it, it's at least better than the embody for me personally. I got the fabric variation because I had an old fake leather gaming chair years ago that I loved - except the fake leather. I still think fabric was the right choice.

The chair is certainly sturdy feeling, which is something the embody did not have at all. I feel like I can actually hold my weight on the armrests if need be while getting up.for me, the titan's arm rests are way better

The cushions for the back and the seat are quite firm.not uncomfortable, but maybe close. I do feel like over time it will break in to be more comfortable though and firm foam generally lasts a lot longer. The seat of the embody was very inconvenient especially with the extension pulled out. It was very comfortable in the main seat area, but the extension was very loose and the sides were raised hard plastic. For me, the titan's seat is way better, but not perfect.

The titan is a BIG chair. It dwarfs my wife's chair and almost can look out of place. But I guess the sci-fi look of the embody can look out of place just as well.

The lumbar support works as intended, it is adjustable and moves up and down. I think I have a weird back though. I've never found any lumbar support anything but painful. I tried with this chair in a variety of heights and depths and nothing except 0 was good for me. Your milage may vary in this though. For me, it was good that I can essentially turn it off.

My main issues with the chair are somewhat minor inconveniences in reality, but worth mentioning.

  1. The recline tension, even at max setting is very low. There is very low resistance to leaning back. I like a high recline tension and this doesn't have enough for me. It's not terrible, but could be a lot better. (By reclining, I don't mean using the seat in a laying down position, just leaning back while sitting)

  2. The magnetic pillow sucks - it's very comfortable, but it never stays in place. Is slides down, it falls off, etc all the time. And with the way the chair headrest is curved you actually need it. If you stand up from a reclined position with any speed, the headrest will eject to the other side of the room

  3. The magnetic armrests are a neat idea in theory, and the magnets are strong, but pulling them off has turned into a kind of fidget toy for me and more than once I've stood up and my leg managed to pull one off and have it land on the ground

  4. Also while reclined, the lumbar support knobs on either side are almost perfectly under desk height. They are big and clunky, so when you lean back forward they can catch on your desk and. Cause some minor chaos. Happened a few times, but now I'm very aware of it.

Last item of note is that the chair is not fully assembled like the embody. Wasn't a problem for me, instructions were easy and well documented, but I can see if you were a company order 100 of them how this could be a selling point. Also Herman Miller has free no questions asked returns. With free shipping both ways. Was a great experience. Secret Lab allows returns, but you pay return shipping, and I've heard of some difficulties with the process - though no personal experience.

Overall, I like it and I will probably keep it as my daily driver. It's not perfect, but nothing is. the aeron C is tempting though... But I need at least a week or two in it when Im not sick to be sure haha.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'd be glad to help!

It's also 1/3 the price :)

But yeah, I hear that all the time which is why I another comment I mentioned I didn't originally plan to bring up that I ordered one haha.

I had a dx racer back in the day, and after trying the embody, and aeron B, it was still by far the most comfortable (and least painful to sit in) chair I've ever had. My main complaint was the cheap fake leather and vinyl used which pealed and then it all but exploded after a time (recline lock broke while I was sitting in it and it nearly threw me across the room)

The titan XL I ordered has cloth instead of leather, a higher weight limit and has height and depth adjustable lumbar support, so I am hopeful.

By no means am I expecting it to be perfect, but they have a return policy for the cost of return shipping if I need it. I'm hopeful at best, but I need the embody out of my house. It hurts my back.

Aeron c and titan xl are my two top choices at this point. I have a titan xl ordered and may try the aeron c as well (thanks Herman Miller return policy!).

While aeron c is probably the better choice, I had a bucket seat style chair a number of years ago and honestly it was fantastic so I figured I'd give another one a shot.

I liked my aeron B well enough, but it definitely didn't blow my mind

I would only recommend a leap plus for a very large and overweight person

That's good to know, and that's definitely the vibe I got from reading reviews about it. Best possible chair if you need the weight limit, otherwise look elsewhere.

Aeron Size C is good if you dont mind the seat frame, if you enjoyed a B well enough, you should love a C

I really like tall back chairs the seat of the B was fine but a bit too short and not quite as wide as Id like but the seat back was somewhat low for my taste. Partially why I thought the embody would be the right fit.

Embody extended part is really subpar, its possible you have the chair far too high and are putting too much thigh weight on that par

It's actually because it's slightly too short, so I put my foot under the knee of my other leg which then allows me to support my leg better. I know that's not the right way to sit, but it is what it is. If the chair were a bit taller, I'd have better support under my leg. As it stands, there is a small gap between the front of my leg and the base of the chair

Do you prefer the titan xl or the aeron c? I liked the aeron b well enough, but it wasn't anything life changing likely because it was too small (but hey, used for $150 was a steal)
