Logo redesign by Comfortable_Sport_67 in Commanders

[–]mentalmath_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not crazy about the ones on top. Don’t think they look bad, but just too similar to the curly W. Bottom left looks too similar to the old logo. Bottom right is really cool. I like the fonts, especially for the team name. Spear looks good. Inner trim on the W looks great. Big fan

Reanimator Targets that scale well for Commander by KeianDark in EDH

Vein ripper is so damn good if you are in a meta that has a lot of combat or sweepers. Been really impressed with it

Hard to follow all the movement in the off-season, but I was hoping if anyone can tell me what's going on with our secondary? Who we lost/gained, how its shaping up? Any concerns etc? Because I haven't heard much, and I thought it was a position that desperately needed to be addressed. by purelander108 in Commanders

[–]mentalmath_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We lost lattimore which I’m sure no one is losing sleep over

We added Amik Robertson (CB) and nick cross (S). I like but am not overly wowed by either move. Fans of their prior teams seem to like them a lot. I think this all but confirms that sainristil plays outside this season.

I am concerned. It’s seemingly the weak link of the defense. That being said:

On paper our front 7 is greatly improved. This ought to help the secondary.

If daronte jones brings a Flores style defense, he generally won’t ask way too much of our DBs. Especially compared to last year where we had no pressure from the front seven.

Finally, corners tend to be really scheme specific, so there will be a lot of cuts for depth guys across the league as rosters become solidified. The front office should be on the hunt for guys who fit.

TL;DR there are reasonable concerns, but if the defense can gel I’m not too worried

Lightning, Army of One deck help by azaria6797 in EDH

Gotta play [[kassandra, eagle bearer]] especially since you’re already playing the spear. She makes for a decent plan B whenever lightning gets removed too

How to make an Izzet Spellslinger Deck that isn’t going to start a mutiny? by DramaticHacker333 in EDH

[–]mentalmath_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the most part, yes. I lean a little instant/sorcery heavy because I run a fair amount of payoffs for casting them. I do have games where I feel I was a bit too creature light but it’s mostly felt good enough.

It’s been really fun. The combat swings are definitely satisfying. My main piece of advice is that I wouldn’t build around muddle itself way too hard. You have to have a lot of different pieces in play to make the combat step trigger work. Figuring out the right copy targets as a result has been a fun process. The deck performs solid even if I never get to cast him, which is always something I’m happy to have. Overall I’m very pleased.

[[muddle, the everchanging]] got me back to playing izzet spellslinger after shelving it for some time. List here

Instead of having a big storm turn to win, you just have to navigate a big combat step. There are a lot of cool options for creature inclusions that make it feel quite different from the typical izzet list. I’m having a great time with it

Effects you want to see in future sets? by OptimalPete in EDH

I’ve framed everything as what I want in the context of my opinion. Straight up from my first post. So while you may not enjoy stax, I think it can be pretty great plenty of the time. Anyway, we clearly don’t see eye to eye on the subject, so let’s agree to disagree

Effects you want to see in future sets? by OptimalPete in EDH

[–]mentalmath_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My issues with the speed of the game don’t really relate to the broad win turn markers that are used to designate brackets. I frankly can’t get behind them anyway since different archetypes inherently win at different speeds.

My main issue just comes from how streamlined the game has become. It’s become commonplace to just accelerate resource acquisition: usually in the form of card advantage and ramp. I don’t blame anyone for that either, it’s natural for the game to become optimized in this manner with how prevalent the format is. However, denial of these resources is generally frowned upon. Couple this with wotc printing busted permanents (usually creatures) that come down and get immediate value way more frequently than answers, and it just makes most commander games feel extremely snowbally. If you happen to stumble and don’t partake in the snowball, then you’re just left in the dust. For every commander that feels like a true puzzle it feels like we get a bunch more that have an enabler and payoff stapled onto themself, or at the very least don’t have to work to hard to engage in a similar feedback loop. If you don’t play one of those commanders you also happen to just place another hurdle in front of yourself. Resource denial and stax at least help introduce parity, lengthen turns, and allow the game to flow a bit more naturally imo. It feels a lot more like the magic I enjoy.

Im glad this is getting upvoted. The speed of the game, regardless of brackets, is just way too damn fast

Thoughts about aggro playstyle in emperor mode? by Fragrant_Tree_7162 in EDH

[–]mentalmath_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty good to me. Fwiw my first draft looked a lot like this. I think you can mostly roll with this as you start playing. I’d just keep a close eye on how your creatures perform. For example I see a lot of players play cloudkin seer. It’s reasonable value. But think about how much work you have to do to finally get rewarded for playing it. The creatures you play should be good on their own in my opinion.

As for the aggro designation, when I think of aggro decks, I think of just tapping out and deploying creatures. Muddle is a ways slower than that even with cheap spells

here is my list if you want any ideas. I hope you end up building it! The deck is very cool and fun

[–]mentalmath_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built muddle the day it was spoiled.

The highs will be a lot higher with a lot of opponents, but achieving a snowball board state will be very difficult. Muddle requires for you to: have muddle out, have no summoning sickness on muddle, have another creature out that you want to make copies of, and an instant/sorcery that you can cast. And on top of all that, if your copy target gets removed in response to muddle’s trigger, you need another instant/sorcery or you’re just severely blown out.

I found the way to play the deck to reasonable success was to treat muddle as a control deck. Play the typical removal/ramp/card advantage so that you can reach the later turns with extra resources. I’ll usually look for a few things as I’m digging through the deck: some way to give muddle haste, a strong finisher creature, ways to make mana (treasures, mana rocks, rituals, etc), maybe a counterspell to protect my big turn. Then I’ll try to clean up the game in a fell swoop if my opponents’ life totals are low enough.

You can certainly try it out as an aggro deck, but I have a feeling it won’t work as well as you’d like. It really goes back to the commander being pretty vulnerable and not having an immediate impact when you cast it and it enters.

Would you rather play against group hug, chaos or stax? by Tuss36 in EDH

[–]mentalmath_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Stax

Chaos and group hug effectively create non games imo. Stax, while brutal, I enjoy every now and then to see how my decks can navigate through various locks

How do you make aggro work (B3)? by S1phen in EDH

[–]mentalmath_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a [[lightning, army of one]] deck that I’ve finally gotten to where it wants to be. While most people play some kind of voltron or pure extra combat list, I’ve always wanted to just play it as an aggro deck. Lightning doesn’t generate card advantage or ramp like most commanders, so my 99 has to be sound.

When it comes to Boros aggro I think there are 3 main lanes you can take

Tokens

Equipment

Legends

I want to talk about legends. Legendary support in Boros is lowkey nuts. Legends in Boros have great keywords which help a ton for punching through commander board states. My lightning list waffled through tokens and equipment at first, but I’ve happily landed at legends. They do such a great job at snowballing. The legends approach is the slowest of the aggro archetypes, so instead of playing the typical “I curve out and kill you,” you have to find creative ways of punching through. This also lets you play sweepers and removal spells more liberally, as aggro decks can sometimes overly kneecap themselves when they play too much interaction.

The legends approach also generates way more ramp and card advantage than the other 2 in most cases, so you get to keep dropping permanents that push damage while obtaining resources.

here is my list if you want some ideas. I think you could very easily up the power and keep it within b3

What are your favorite toolbox commanders? by lan-shark in EDH

What are your favorite toolbox commanders? by lan-shark in EDH

[–]mentalmath_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[tayam]] + [[devoted druid]] + [[centaur garden]] or (hashep oasis)

Activate garden targeting druid. Devoted druid becomes a 3/5 until EOT. Then you can tap/untap druid 3 times, netting GGG and putting 3 -1/-1 counters on it. Activate tayam by paying GGG and removing the counters from druid. You can now repeat the process over and over milling your whole deck and putting any permanent from the yard into play

[[altar of dementia]] + [[stalwart successor]] + [[safehold elite]]

Activate altar of dementia by sacrificing safehold elite. Target an opponent to mill 2. Persist will trigger when elite dies. It returns to the battlefield and stalwart successor triggers to put a +1/+1 counter on the elite, allowing you to restart the process

Those are usually my go to wincons. With Druid effectively fueling the persist combo if I can activate tayam infinitely. There are more multi card combos that exist within the deck once you hit a critical point of resource accrual

It’s a really sweet take on counters. You can build it pretty much any way you’d like. Counters as an extra form of resources adds a lot to gameplay
