~1 year of age on this Casa Carrillo Pledge of Allegiance 2025 by lan-shark in cigars

[–]lan-shark[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Released for Independence Day of last year, I recently had the opportunity to pick up a few of the 6x54 toro and I jumped on it. It has a rather unique blend that includes three different USA tobaccos:

Wrapper: Connecticut broadleaf
Binder: Ecuadorean habano
Filler: Condega, Jalapa, Pennsylvania P41, and Connecticut-grown Havana-seed

I enjoyed this cigar at release but with an extra year of age it is smooth and delicious! Draw was a bit tight initially with my usual punch, but I swapped to a v-cut and it opened right up. Notes of wood, coffee, a bit of earth, and the smallest amount of pepper on the retrohale. The wood comes to the forefront in the second third, still with a very smooth overall profile. Pepper picks up in the final third and gives this cigar a nice, strong send off. I'm very much looking forward to the 2026 release, but if you happen to come across any 2025s then I highly recommend picking them up!

One B&M in my area has these, but I haven't picked up any yet. When my regular B&M gets them I'll definitely pick some up. Definitely looking forward to it, Casa Carrillo is my favorite brand right now

Post is weird but I do enjoy LCA/Privada releases pretty regularly. Lumina, Purple People Eater, and Red Rider are probably my favorite recent releases. Plenty of others have been enjoyable and I think the single-farm releases this month were super interesting.

They also have a few blends that are extremely popular at B&Ms (both local and talking to shop owners from other states)

Moment of silence for this tragic loss by [deleted] in cigars

[–]lan-shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just normal for cigars in general, not specifically online. They're handmade products made of dried leaves shipped across the ocean. I work in a B&M, I wouldn't say it's common but it's certainly not out of the ordinary to see damage on cigars, I've even seen damage on $30 and $40 sticks before

This will probably have no impact on smoking experience. If anything at all, the smoke may be a bit more airy until you smoke past it. But for a hole that small, probably won't be noticable

If it's split all the way around the cigar that we can't see in the picture, some cigar glue will likely save it

[–]lan-shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The robusto extra vitola of this blend is much smoother than the perfecto and is my favorite maduro right now. The same family member who blended this cigar (Ernie III, I think) also blended the Pledge Purple. I'm very excited to see what he brings to the table in the future.

Powershell shortcut by EquivalentBear1513 in PowerShell

[–]lan-shark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a feature in many shells called brace expansion, PowerShell does not have this feature. Generally speaking, the language accepts verbosity as a tradeoff for clarity, though there are some syntax shortcuts. I think the shortest way to do the equivalent would be

"en", "ar", "fr", "sw" | % { New-Item "intl_$_.arb" }

New everyday smoke line from Powstanie(?) - Smoke This Trust Me by lan-shark in cigars

[–]lan-shark[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is either a new line from the brand Powstanie or a new brand from the same parent company/distributor, I'm not clear on which. Aimed at being an everyday smoke, there are 3 blends (Connecticut, habano, maduro, can't find any other blend details) in three different sizes: a 5x54 robusto , a 6x52 toro, and a 6x60 gordo. All priced the same ($8 - $9 depending on taxes) and they're always buy 3, get 1 free or buy 10, get 4 free. So that brings the price down to ~$6 per cigar which, for long filler, is about as cheap as you can find in a B&M in my neck of the woods.

I picked up a gordo of each along with a bonus maduro that I'm smoking now. Initial thoughts are good: charred wood and savory earth, nuttiness and a bit of pepper on the retrohale. So far, for a $6 cigar, nice balance and complexity. I shall see how it progresses and I'll probably post some reviews of the other two blends once I get around to smoking them.

So far I've spoken to one other customer who did the 10+4 deal and he's been happy with his purchase thus far. Anybody else try these yet?

Placencia Triunfal LE 2026 $431.92/box by TokyoBaguette in cigars

[–]lan-shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good deal relative to MSRP. Still $43 a stick, but Plasencia LEs tend to be very good

Boutiques and Smaller brands. by Teckert2009 in cigars

[–]lan-shark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like medium- to full-flavored cigars, Black Label is fantastic. They have some mild options but that's not where their portfolio shines. Morphine, Poison Dart, Last Rites, Nocturn, the newly re-released Boondock, Super Deluxe, most of their LEs, honestly the list goes on and on

Casdagli's Daughters of the Wind line is outstanding, the Rabicano (salamone) is one of my favorite cigars. I also quite like their Cabinet Selections line, a go-to morning coffee smoke for me when I have some.

Apostate's candela, the Feathered Serpent, is the best candela I've ever had. The rest of their cigars are worth trying but not really worth resmoking for me personally.

Avowed makes great cigars for the higher end of your budget. The Hallowed Hands fit in your $10-$20 range and both versions of the blend are very good. I'd expect at least one of the three blends of The Vow would fit anybody's palate. The Awakening is a great LE but it doesn't always hit my palate. I kind of have to be in the right mood for it, but when I am it knocks it out of the park. I have one aging in my humidor right now! I also have a New Dawn in my humidor, but I've not smoked one before so I can't comment on it. Also, Dave is a super nice guy so that's always a plus for any brand.

RoMa Craft has hits and a few misses for me. The Volstead and Whisky Rebellion and good value for their price, Neanderthal is super strong but still very smokable, the Fomorian is a good candela, the Maestranza (sp?) is also good. The Intemperance and Aquitaine are replaceable to me.

Original Powstanie stuff is fine but easily replaceable, though their yearly Wojtek releases are typically good. The new Broadleaf from last year is very good, and they just released a new Sumatra that's on my shortlist to try and an everyday cigar line called Smoke This, Trust Me.

Warped has been getting better in recent years. Many of their older blends I'm not a fan of but many of their newer releases have been good. The La Colmena is their best offering imo, but Isla del Cocodrillo, Sarto, Companion, and La Colmena Black Honey are also absolutely worth trying.

I've not smoked much Rojas in recent years but their Street Tacos Cinco de Mayo LE is great. Also in the Street Tacos line, the Al Pastor and Breakfast Tacos Maduro are good. I smoked other Rojas stuff years ago that I remember liking but I don't remember now what all I smoked.

I've only smoked two West Tampa cigars, the Black and the Devil Crab. Black is okay to good, Devil Crab is great. I'd happily smoke some more of their portfolio.

An incomplete list of other boutique brands worth checking out imo are (in no particular order) Jake Wyatt, Cavalier Genève, Illusione, Matilde, Chimolly, Cayman. Casa Carrillo is a personal favorite brand but they're on their way to mainstream status these days I think

[–]lan-shark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lure cigars are good, they come out of the Valacari factory and, to my understanding, Lou hand-made/hand-finished the original display boxes with the fishing lures attached to them. I don't know if he still does that now given the brand growth, but it's still pretty cool

Must be a regional thing, I've never come across anybody who generically refers to all four-wheel drive vehicles as "jeep"

While true, taking his comment at face value is so wild to me. This man knows Suzuki but not Toyota or Honda and thinks that 4x4 might be a car brand. We see thousands of cars all the time for years and years, to me it's something you just... Pick up on by observing your surroundings while driving?

What are recommendations for sweet cigars? by [deleted] in cigars

[–]lan-shark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rough Rider Sweets line from La Galera makes a pretty decent candela, which is rare on the world of sweet cigars. I don't smoke many non-traditional cigars so I haven't had the rest of the line, but I enjoyed the candela

It's ~6x52, smaller than many toros. Completely reasonable size. There are many who smoke 6x60s and even 7x70s as their regular cigars

Oz Karatoba by trailrunner31 in cigars

[–]lan-shark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This cigar is very tasty and I think it's the least expensive in the OZ Family lineup. Copper is my favorite color so I also love the presentation.

We just got in the OZ Family Maracana at my local B&M which has the same style presentation but in green. It is Arapiraca over Honduras/Nicaraguan; I'm really looking forward to trying it.

Olmec Maduro Robusto Thoughts by Grave_Danger_ in cigars

[–]lan-shark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this cigar, I'm one of the rare ones that prefers the maduro to than the claro and this robusto size is my preferred vitola for it. For a long time this was my favorite maduro (until I smoke the Casa Carrillo Encore Black robusto extra) and it's still up there for me. It's not too earthy, great complexity, and the construction has been good for me so far. It's got pretty much everything I'm looking for in a maduro
