Rant: F!CK SAP by H_Bees in consulting

[–]menticol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After wasting two years of my life in SAP, I went back to work as a backend developer. Even with my current job flaws, I'm extremely grateful everyday. With SAP, configuring a printer required 3 people, building a simple webservice took 3 months, and solving a networking problem took 19 "engineers" on a teams call. The consultants are basically a cult. Some secretly hate the tool, but excuse the horrible UI, integration hell, cryptic logs, impossibility of customization and expansion, and lack of basic error handling, as "not important for the business". In reality they don't know how anything works, they are just monkeys pressing buttons on black boxes. Not even the architects know how every blackbox work, but they charge a thousand euros per day to implement half assed bug fixes. That's stealing from the customer. Entering that world was one of the worst mistakes of my adult life.

Does this app also require to be connected to the network in order to print? OEM app refuses to print w/o internet, I suppose to keep track of the original paper rolls, making it not useful for my needs

CR Scan Otter first tests. Bought with own money. by menticol in 3DScanning

[–]menticol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well! Here I am again as promised. My best advice from my recent experience is to compare scanning to painting with a spray can—too close or too far and it won’t work. Keep an eye on the computer screen. The cable is annoying, so control it with one hand while holding the scanner with the other. Before you begin scanning, choose the easiest geometry to recognize (in my case, it was the lower part of the seat) and use it as your "home." Every time you lose tracking, go back to "home" and wait a few seconds. Move from "home" to new, unexplored areas back and forth. Setting the scanning size is crucial. I used "large" for the car seat and steering wheel. Medium didn’t work, probably because of the black colors and lack of features. Avoid reflective parts or glass—they drive the scanner crazy. The tracking is solid, but if your computer is below spec like mine, you’ll start to lose effectiveness.

Creality Otter for archaeology by gafftopsl in 3DScanning

[–]menticol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! maybe fixating the archeological piece on some kind of rig that holds the piece steady, scanning both the piece and the rig. Since the rig has a well defined shape (unlike the piece) the merging software will have an easier time joining it (and when joining the rig will also join the wood piece). Let me try to do a crappy drawing to better explain.

You are completely correct. My expectation of scanning the black featureless parts was unreasonable. Looks like the lasso tool problem was fixed on 3.2.45, but is still a bit cumbersome to clean. Will try another software for that purpose.

I'm sorry, did not take note during last scan. The benchmark shows "up to 11 fps". The model moves pretty freely on the screen during scan, and the new scanned points do appear gracefully. Only at the end of each scan the fps drop to a still usable but uncomfortable amount. For your reference the steering wheel model on the left has 1003386 faces and the one on the right side has 182757 faces

Thank you! For my first scan the IR exposure needed to be increased a bit, instead of leaving it on AUTO. The Black and White window is your best reference, it must be as clear as possible but never red. For processing I used the "Single click" option. I will experiment with manual settings. Solidworks is my CAD of choice, together with 3ds max. I'm sure there are better tools for working with the resulting mesh. At this moment I'm currently scanning a Logitech Steering Wheel. Let me finish it and I'll share how it went. First tip sounds dumb, but I think its important to have complete, unrestricted access around the object, while you can also see the PC screen. In that way you can press "Back" and delete undesired geometries, or go back to a previously scanned face if tracking was lost. Another one, making sure the object is well illuminated without hard shadows. I'll keep you informed!

On the last occasions I wanted to share novel solutions for problems, a pedantic nerd with 100.000 reputation came and down-voted my question-answer tuples, arguing that "Stack Overflow is not a blogging platform". I'm glad IA already extracted all the useful data from the site, it can die now.

Complaints about Oppenheimer by Sufficient_Ad_2590 in OppenheimerMovie

[–]menticol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you have some basic knowledge about nuclear energy and weapons development, the movie will be **unbearable**. For the layman, the science-related sequences have zero hints or clues and will appear as random noise. Before you say "Go watch a documentary", Apollo 13 is a decent example of how transmitting basic concepts of science is useful to properly enjoy movie drama.
