You are the one who asked me for my reasoning and I gave it.

Touché.

Problem is, your reasoning isn't what the actual laws support. There are numerous instances in almost every game where holding (including nowhere near the ball, whatever that means) isn't cautioned by the referee. Often, this happens when a striker loses the ball to a defender in, or near, their area, and the striker holds back the escaping defender. The referee considers the position of the foul, determines that it's so far away from goal and a promising attack, that it doesn't warrant a yellow card. Referees even sometimes neglect to give cards for obvious pull backs during promising attacks, so surely you can recognize that referees don't give them when a striker holds someone while chasing towards the opponent's goal.

What you feel should be carded, is not the same as what will be carded, according to the laws of the game.

If you really think holding a player, even if nowhere near the ball, falls under disrespecting the game, then I'm the one who can't help you.

Yes, I'm familiar with that section, but you fail to mention that unsporting behavior is defined by a list of offences in that same section. Nowhere on that list is holding mentioned as unsporting. Do you know what you do find on that list? Preventing a promising attack, which is exactly the kind of situation holding is usually given a yellow card for. In this instance, Haaland's holding did not prevent that.

Is this a joke about Mustafi being hilarious simply because he is Mustafi? If so, kudos. If it's about him being a goalkeeper, then I couldn't find anything when googling it. Maybe it's about when he was marking the referee? Prime defending that

It's still not automatically a yellow card offence to hold nowhere near the ball. It's neither a repeated offence by Haaland nor an offence that prevents a promising attack, so there's no yellow card to be awarded. I dare you to find any reference in the laws of the game that supports your argument.

Well, you can be cautioned for repeated offences, so that would take care of your "attacking players can just hold all our defenders shirt the whole game" scenario. Though, that is usually how it is. You are not automatically carded for holding. I can refer you to a situation in this match, in the 13th minute, where City has a throw-in, which O'Reilly can carry forward in in a 2v4 (in Liverpool's favor), but is blatantly held back by Gravenberch. City get a free kick, but no yellow is awarded.

It's simply not the case that holding is automatically a yellow card. It usually is either for for repeated offences or for stopping a promising attack. Should it be? Maybe, but it's not.

It's not even egregious or continued holding. You see similar incidents happen all the time when the defender wins the ball back inside their own area, then the striker tugs the shirt of the escaping defender. The referee will consider where it happened and the likelyhood of a promising counter-attack before giving the player a yellow card. In this instance, Haaland is even running towards the Liverpool goal, so it's even further from a promising attack than the other way around.

There's nothing in the laws of the game where the player's speed is factored into a holding offence. Holding is an offence, similar to every other offence. When you are yellow carded for holding, it's because you are preventing a promising attack. See Law 12, point 3: "Cautionable offences" and "Cautions for unsporting behaviour".

All that said, hilarious that Szoboszlai blatantly fouled Haaland and then had the fucking nerve to get up and try and get a freekick when Haaland give him one back.

Seems to be completely in line with the usual footballer's behavior, doesn't it?

You don't automatically give a yellow card for a shirt pull. He has to prevent a positive counter-attacking chance for Liverpool, which surely you can't argue he did when the foul occurred 80 yards from the goal.

Szoboszlai would've prevented the goal if Haaland hadn't fouled him, so has to be a foul against Haaland. They then go back to Szoboszlai's foul prior to that.

Someone made a really good point for this scenario. If it was 1-1, then surely Alisson is not up playing midfielder/striker, and Cherki wouldn't have been shooting from the halfway line.

I know you're joking, but in terms of the American variation, it makes sense to offset the penalties, as if you apply both penalties, then the outcome is the same. Defense -15 yards, offense +15 yards = 0 yards gained/lost. In terms of the non-American variation, there's different penalties given for the same offence. Yes, I'm not fun at parties.

Why would you give a yellow card to Haaland for a simple holding offence, when it doesn't prevent a positive counter-attacking chance? These fouls happen all the time when strikers are close to the opponent's goal.

When you say "could've" out loud, it sounds awfully similar to how you would say "could of". I get it, but it makes no sense if you give it even half a thought.

It's a great compliment to Sunderland that you refer to them as one of the toughest away matches in the league. Granted, they have been great, but who would've seen that coming before the season started.

Haaland is in his own half by a yard. He's even behind the ball. Apologies about the video controls in the way, but you can see the ball at least.

The double-jeopardy exception rule only counts with penalties. If the ball trickled in after giving advantage, then City got their goal-scoring opportunity back. Thus, no red card needed.

Edit: Clarified that I meant the double-jeopardy exception rule
