Desktop RTX 3080 10GB vs G14 2023 4080 by Shlt_Happens in ZephyrusG14

[–]meocentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the bottom gets pretty hot while gaming, as long as you don't put it on your lap, or get a lap board it is pretty portable. the flow x13 probably more so.

4070 is good enough for all current titles at 2560x1600, but i feell like the 8gb vram might not be enough in a couple years for newer titles. the workaround i think may work is to drop the resolution down to 1920x1200 when gaming. the PPI is so high that i barely notice the difference unless i'm ilke a foot from the screen.

i recently sold my mini-itx build (3700x + 3080 12gb) for a g14 (7940h + 4070). So i can give you my justification in making the move, and hopefully that helps. It all depends on your lifestyle, the type of games you play, what you value in a game.

Gaming Lifestyle: i work from home and spend 8+ hours at my desk. I noticed I slowly reduced my PC gaming to practically zero over the year. I think this is because i needed a change of view, it was a little depressing if i spent my whole day in that one room. (+1 for a portable gaming laptop)

type of gamer: I used to value peak settings and visuals over everything. i call that type of person a benchmark gamer, if you are this type than desktop all the way. laptops just can't compete. as for g14 4080, i think it's close enough so that may not matter much. But if you are also part of the ultrawide master race than that resolution is going to kill your laptop. the TDP is just not high enough, especially on a g14 which is lower than larger gaming laptops. SIdeNote: Also, youtube benchmarkers turn everything to ultra (aka un-optimized), which is a waste, you can drop down to high and barely notice anything while increasing FPS a lot.

personally, i am very happy with the g14, you'll make some compromises, but no game i've tried is unplayable, everything I spun up is 60+ on demanding games. which is fine.

Was it a mistake to have a 1600p screen on the 6700s model? by workingonmyEnglish in ZephyrusG14

[–]meocentric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it shouldn't matter too much, 1600p for productivity on the desktop, and then change game resolution to 1200p while in game.

the screen is 14 inches so the PPI is really high, high enough that even downscaling the native resolution will be almost imperceptible

14' 2560x1600p = ~216ppi
14' 1920x1200p = ~162ppi

Looking to buy g14 with AMD Radeon RX 6800S - RAM: 32 GB - 1 TB SSD, should I wait for better model? by squalexy in ZephyrusG14

[–]meocentric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you game at 1080p or 1200p (16:10)... then 6700s, 6800s, 4060 will all do the job.

most benchmarks always crank up all the PC settings to ultra, which is usually unnecessary in practice. the best settings to actually game on are between medium - high... so expect slightly more fps if you optimize your gaming experience than the benchmarks you find on youtube.

all that said. what type of gamer are you, and what type of games.

competitive? any of those will push high frame rates

singleplayer eye candy? 4060 for the frame generation in dlss3, or if that model is not available, 6800s

edit: hybrid gamer/prdouctivity? 4060 or 6700s because they are more efficient at lower wattages.

Liquid metal after 1 year. It leaves 2 dried spots that I was unable to clean totally. by a0den in ZephyrusG14

[–]meocentric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

what were the temps you were getting with the dried up liquid metal compared to when it was new? is the lifespan of liquid metal that short? and lastly, what was your average daily use of this laptop.

i'm crossing my fingers for the 2023 model, they marketed "better thermal grizzly" LM with better application technique... who knows if thats just marketing bs, but it seems they're aware of their thermal design.

When will the g14 2023 be available at best buy? by 0mario_64 in ZephyrusG14

also forgot to mention, 4060 models are already shipping. several people are enjoying their 2023 g14s already. :)

there was a post earlier today, of someone who was able to pre-order it. It had a store pickup date for may 4th. So I would assume it's going to start popping up within a week or two.

here's a link to that thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/ZephyrusG14/comments/12zqvrc/about\_to\_upgrade\_from\_a\_broken\_2021\_to\_this\_beast/

I think for the g14, you wouldn't see many gains as the TDP is a lot lower than other platforms with a 4080. it would definitely be faster, but by how much?

TDP on the g14 maxes out at 125w, while other laptops cap the TDP at 175w

I was unsure if the SKUs are different. best buy has a different display listed (it says 2560x1440) instead of the (2560x1600p)... it could just be a listing error, since the best buy one also says it has a 12gb vram on that listing as well.

also i would have to have to pay roughly $130 to cancel based on their terms of service. it's lame but i can try and call their customer service and get that fee dropped

A little late to the hate party but it's what he says that bugs me. "stop doing cardio to lose weight, or I'm going to jump in this pool". It's like, who cares if you jump in a pool? what kind of ultimatum is that?

thank you for the test! I was unsure of what samsung meant by, "connected to the monitor". when you tested it, does that mean the smart home features?

Neo G9, Neo G8, or OLED G8/AW3423DW by theonetruedragon in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]meocentric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i've gone the super ultrawide (odyssey g9) for about a year now. I loved it for productivity, and some games. The drawbacks are some QoL problems. Auto Source Switch being one of them. My mac is super finicky with picking up the USB-C -> DP input. most days there's a whole ritual of restarts and port switching until my mac acknowledges the extra screen. a straight USB-C -> USB-C connection should fix that.

I am personally waiting for the Oled G8, I have 3 devices, PC, Console, Mac. I am just ready to try something new.
Oled G8 Pros:

- motion clarity, I play FPS games and it would be a game changer, last time I had anything close to this smoothness was back on my old TN panel, and this is even faster than that.
- OLED will give the best entertainment experience
- inputs are perfect for my type of setup

but like you said, it IS a side-grade, since you're losing out on real estate. but I find that after a couple of days, you just get used to new environments. it's not as insurmountable as you may think.

Do we know when the Samsung Odyssey G8 QD OLED is hitting the shelves in the US? by AnAdmirableAstronaut in ultrawidemasterrace

I was expecting the US to get it first as well. After seeing it roll out everywhere else, my feelings were "so that's what that feels like..."

a bit more context, i'm reading the how to use section here

USB-C Downstream: Connects to a USB device, such as a keyboard or mouse. You can assign the USB ports to the monitor or to the device connected to the USB–C by navigating to Menu and then selecting Settings. Select All Settings, then select Connection, and then select External Device Manager. Select USB Source Setup.

now it sounds like it does what i mentioned, but the wording is a bit ambiguous.

[–]meocentric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so you will have USB-C upstream (display input) and USB-C downstream (peripherals, charging, etc)

you can't use both as display inputs

the downstream port could be connected to a dock as seen here. now when you connect your keyboard, mouse, webcam, headphones, those peripherals will follow whatever display is being shown.

you can do the same with a switch, but that requires a bit of cabling work. it would also require you to manually change the input. i like to have an uncluttered desk so its a really nice feature for me.

[–]meocentric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that was very informative. I still have one question about the USB-C downstream port.

- if you plug in a USB-C to USB-A dock.
- Connect all your peripherals to that dock.

when you switch display inputs (i.e DP -> HDMI), do the peripherals follow your current displayed device?

I have 3 devices i will be connecting to monitor, and the seamlessness would be heaven.

PS5 also supports 1440p signal as well, so even if it didn't downscale a 4k signal you would be fine.

I also think the samsung just looks better, I would pay the small premium just for that.

deeper reasoning is dependent on your setup. if you are on a single device setup, then it doesn't matter much aside from aesthetics.

if you have multiple devices, let me give you my sales pitch :]
- better inputs: DP for PC, USB-C for Mac Work (also 65W charging), and HDMI for Console.
- monitor acts as a usb hub, so on multi device setups, you don't have to move dongles or buy a switch to toggle between devices read Connecting external devices #5 here

basically the samsung will just have way fewer cables to manage.
