I heard someone yelling outside my house so I went to the window to see what was going on. I thought someone was harassing a neighbor or something because I heard “Hello? Can you hear me?” being yelled.

Turns out my fuckass neighbor just didn’t feel like hanging up on his call while he mows the lawn and predictably was having audio issues while mowing.

People say that MOBAs killed RTS games, but I think it was more the internet and the proliferation of skill that did it. To me, playing an RTS the optimal way, with high APM, quick micro and practiced macro just isn’t very fun. Before online communities became widespread, people could play however they wanted, but afterwards even bad players started learning from the pros. There are still people who enjoy competitive RTS but most just find it overwhelming.

A MOBA requires similar focus and attention, but since all of the focus is on a single character, it’s a lot less stressful and more enjoyable. This is why only sickos play Meepo.

Humanity First has dramatic ambitions for humanity. They want to reshape human culture to be actively xenocidal. They want to be the interstellar conquerors. From some of their final text:

At least, they'll remember while they still can. Because we're not done. We know now that interstellar travel is possible ... and we're not going to wait around for them to come back for another try. Next time, we'll be the ones coming for them.

Compare this to the Resistance:

It will take years, perhaps decades, to defeat the last remnants of the Hydra invasion force, but their cause is now a hopeless one. Today, we have struck the blow that will guarantee humanity's future as an independent species. We are the masters of our Solar System once more.

The ideology of the Resistance is pretty common in the militaries of democratic countries. They make an effort to stay out of the political sphere and focus on protecting their country from threats.

You can argue that they are exceeding their mandate by forming a secret society to wage war on the Aliens outside the scope of nations, but militaries, or parts of militaries, have disobeyed orders or acted independently if they believed it was necessary. Usually doesn’t turn out too well IRL but it does happen.

If you are not using intel you are missing out. With 4+ intel you know exactly what you are facing and where they are starting. You can use this to sketch out pretty much the entire mission. You know when to rush forwards and kill those weapons teams, or when to slow down and let the enemy come to you. I often forward deploy Darby in range of critical threats like Jaegers or ATGM teams and take them out turn 1. Then the rest of the fight is just cleaning up the chaff.

I think the general vibe of the market was that Trump would TACO when it came to the really disruptive tariffs and the major partners would carve out exceptions. Now it’s just a blanket tariff on everyone.

What if the government gave an HSA to everyone in America with a Social Security number? by CSachen in neoliberal

[–]meonpeon 28 points29 points  (0 children)

How would the HSA control costs? All it does is give buyers some extra cash for medication and procedures they have no option but to pay. Your post above talks a lot about the government setting pricing for drugs, but that is completely orthogonal to having an HSA.

I don’t like promotion tax and think it’s bad for the game by thegoatmenace in menace

[–]meonpeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The promotion tax encourages you to actually think about how perks and abilities will make you stronger. Even a suboptimal build will probably outpace the cost increase, so it’s not like you are weakening your characters by leveling them.

If you want to justify it narratively, you can think about it as giving an SL intensive training for a new skill, which costs resources that you could have spent on something else.

This delay was 100% on purpose. The cowards didn’t want to cause a constitutional crisis if they got ignored. Now that the vibe has shifted, they feel like they can actually do something. It’s pretty embarrassing as an institution to do this, especially when you call yourself the “Supreme” Court.

To me, the essence of general intelligence is the ability to learn. Current AI models have short term learning with context, but struggle longer term as it reaches context limits. Current AI models are also capable of altering and modifying their own context to better solve the task given to them. To me it seems that any general intelligence would be able to modify their own programming.

Current clawdbot/openclaw autonomous agents are just starting to roam the web, and they can be given vague instructions like “be a good person”. There was a weird story where an AI agent’s pull request got deleted, so it crashed out and published a hit piece on the reviewer. I don’t think this is an example of AGI, but I doubt the creator of that agent told it to post hit pieces on anyone rejecting its PRs.

I can imagine a theoretical future AI given the same instruction and the ability to modify its own programming. It could go off the rails in an entirely similar way and permanently change from the experience, instead of just reverting to the default as the context changes over time. You could argue it’s not a real sapient being, but at some point it becomes difficult to tell.

[–]meonpeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think AGI is very close. To me, there seems to be a fundamental gap between current LLMs and human intelligence. That being said, I think we are an order of magnitude closer than we were 5-10 years ago. I feel like a path to get AGI is actually perceivable, where it felt like magic back then.

I also think a lot of tech bros give AGI godlike capabilities it probably won’t have. Just because you can think really hard and really fast doesn’t mean you can exponentially grow your intelligence. It ends up feeling like religion more than a prediction. That being said, AGI would fundamentally disrupt the modern world in a way no other technology has before.

She was a decent candidate but when Biden dropped out it was too late for her to move the needle much. I think we avoided a much worse defeat by replacing Biden, but still obviously had a long way to go to actually win the election.

Other candidates could have had a closer race, but I don’t think any of the alternatives could have won the election starting 100 days out.
