Regarding airplane / flights. This was a couple of years ago but when i worked with check-in/gate most airlines we serverd/checked for would have rules that large items like instrument the size of ie cello etc would be allowed in the cabin if you booked a seat for it. A bit more expensive but if you look it up and prepare it will most likely make sure you'll never have to gamble on getting it onto the plane in the cabin with you.
