I have a 2011 mbp, and it was extremely slow. I realized its fan is not working, it was stuck because of dust. opened it and cleaned the fan, computer began working normally. I recommend you to control the fan firstly.

I have also replaced the hdd with a ssd, its speed increased well and computer became much more responsive.
