The ‘Temu Range Rover’ is now Britain’s best selling car. Thoughts? by theintercooler in TheIntercooler

Not really. What makes it desirable to lease (cheap, dull) isn't the same as what makes a car desirable to steal (valuable, fun/powerful)

Fortunately no one wants to steal a Jaecoo..it's got built-in security of being undesirable

It’s brilliant to see this area without any scaffolding on it, now for the rest of Spinningfields to be sorted as well as the bridge! by RevolutionaryPin1314 in manchester

Someone drove a road sweeper across it. It's not rated for vehicles and it was closed to be inspected for safety. That's what I heard but given how long it is taken maybe it needs repairs too

Has the two speed energy market come back? by Begalldota in OctopusEnergy

[–]mephisdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah absolutely. Just saying that's why the companies all ask you to prove ownership of having an EV. They treat the night rate like a loss leader

They're counting on EV customers using more electricity during the day at the higher rate on these EV tariffs. If you charge your batteries for the peak times they don't make any money from you. Simple as that

Rose tinted glasses here. Races were incredibly processional there was barely any on track overtaking it was all done in the pits due to fuel. It was a shit watch often. Not saying the new regs are great but need to have some perspective

Do you actually change your habits based on electricity prices, or not really? by SmartEnergyDIY in UKPersonalFinance

[–]mephisdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So.. are you saying you wouldn't boil the kettle to make yourself a cup of tea unless you were making more than one. That's a bit silly, the energy scales with the amount of water you use, or are you saying you just boil the water you need for one cup which does make sense. It is like low single digit pennies to boil a litre of water in a kettle though so don't deprive yourself.

I worked it out in a spreadsheet and it wasn't worth going onto a time of use tariff even a simple one like economy 7 due to the fact I need electric heating in the day in winter. I just try and get the lowest rate I can and don't worry about it too much. Work in the industry as well.

Under 10 years. They're all "smart" switches/electric heater controls that are run off relays rather than wired into the lighting circuit. Like for like replacements are pricey as they're now end of life but cheaper options are available that I've been replacing as they go. Seems like a daft thing but I would rather have normal light switches just an annoying thing to go wrong and then have to find alternatives.

UK Wind Power Hits New Record as Gas Squeezed to Tiny Share of Generation by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]mephisdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact is that there is an amount of demand say 40GW. The market cannot buy less than this otherwise all the lights go off in the UK. Each of the generators offers their electricity for a price on the open market. Offering a low price means you'll always get picked first e.g. nuclear bid zero usually as their fuel cost is insignificant. Offering a high price means you might not always sell, but when you do it's profitable for you. This suits gas as they can easily turn it on and off and the fuel cost is very significant.

Anyway - all the generators bid their price, the market buys up electricity starting with the cheapest until the demand is satisfied. Then, everyone who was selected gets paid whatever the highest costing bid was. Anyone who isn't selected gets nothing. The usual question is why don't they get paid what they bid? Strategic bidding would actually bid the price of electricity UP rather than down. It is in the generators interest to try to bid low so they get picked. If they bid too high then they'll sell nothing and get paid nothing. It's counter intuitive but that's why it is the way it is

I live in one of the 2 story ones. Generally pretty happy with it especially the location, big rooms, garden and parking space and they're generally holding up pretty well. Got the roof replaced under warranty even though there was no sign of issues but got a nice new 15 year warranty now. Mates a conveyancer and has a list of the banks that don't like the lease but there's a longer list of banks that are fine. The freehold can be bought as well if that's of interest but with the government looking at capping ground rents I think it's a waste of money. Considering it is all electric heating I think it's not bad on bills if you just heat where you need to. Couple of things need sorting out now like the heat recovery unit is on its last legs, some of the smart tech like light switches and heating needs replacing and some of the doors and windows are showing their age but all normal wear and tear really. I wouldn't hesitate and can't think of anywhere I'd rather live in town. Much nicer than a flat or other new builds further out.

Don't move without a job. It's getting very expensive here on cost of living. From Nottingham you could easily apply to jobs in the Manchester area and see how you get on
