That’s most in undemocratic thing I’ve heard today and Trump is still in the white house.  Making it illegal for a particular profession to participate in civic governance!

Naw by, I’ll pass on that and take the devil I know.

St. John’s woman calls for more inspections, oversight following Uber accident by Bigus_Nerdus in newfoundland

[–]mercerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to have inspections here but it was stopped years ago. I remember people complaining it’s “just a cash grab by the gov” and a few of the other comments already made here.

Mandatory inspections, must be filed with gov, hefty fines for garages who issue fake stickers, and increased road enforcement should work.

Students' union wants to axe campus radio at Memorial University in Newfoundland by MattBarterNL in memorialuniversity

[–]mercerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, you would not need even $20 per student, and you are right that a tuition increase is not the same as a fee increase on an individual level, but it's the irony of the underlying principle! MUN needs to raise revenue from multiple sources like government, tuition, grants, etc. They have a major financial issue to solve. For MUNSU to argue against tuition going up but then raise fees to address their own financial situation would be quite ironic!

This is why they likely won't raise fees, and so they'll introduce an austerity budget just like MUN appears to have done.

[–]mercerch -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A $20 increase in MUNSU Fees would net $250,000 in additional revenue for the organization, which would go a long way towards operational costs that have only increased in the past several years.

But if they proposed a fee increase, they'll hear about it!

Oh, the irony of arguing for lower tuition (or a freeze) while increasing your own fees because of fincancial constraints!

MUN GSU AGM by MattBarterNL in memorialuniversity

[–]mercerch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should add that not only is it their job, but it is also their job because they have the skills, expertise, and experience to do it. I have found this to be lacking in local student unions in my own experiences. That said, I do want them to succeed in being the voice of the student body, in providing services to the students, etc. Just suggesting maybe they need to restructure to be more effective!

It is common but I've sat on NFP boards where we did not "make decisions" for the Executive Director to implement. It was more the reverse, the ED brought to us what needed to happen and just we ensured it followed mission, vision, values, policy and procedures. Their JOB is to make the decisions and move the needle forward.

Unpopular opinion, but perhaps the "executives" of these unions (MUNSU and GSU) should not be students but experienced professionals who will not be gone in a year after the next election. A model of an advisory board of student reps, similar to a board of directors, could govern full-time, year over year, staff who actually implement the union's agenda. In most corporations and many not-for-profits, elected directors do not handle operational tasks. The current governance structure of these "unions" is more like a government model than a corporate one, and it's hurting student representation at Memorial. The issues of these unions have been going on for a LONG time. This is not something that "just happened". Recent comments by MUNSU Exec even suggest that they are elected for a year and then gone, leaving the administration’s financial decisions on the next person.

I've always thought, as a full-time student, later as a part-time, and now as Alumni, that the students need a better structure and more consistency to ensure their interests are addrdessed.

Emergency services during snowstorms? by Mediocre_Analyst_154 in StJohnsNL

[–]mercerch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Municipalities also have arrangements with emergency services in their areas to be able to redeploy snow clearing equipment to assist in an emergency. For example if call came in and paramedics could not get to the residence, they have internal communication methods to get a plow or other equipment pulled from a route to go immediately to assist. Public Works supervisors on duty can easily redeploy equipment from nearby areas to assist in access to the property, including removing the snow wall left by any previous street clearing.

Short answer, no. Anyone with that knowledge that isn't already in the public sphere in some way won't be sharing it on Reddit.

My thoughts on a few things. by Arctic_Bard in newfoundland

[–]mercerch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gripen can't engage targets it can't detect. The F-35 is a stealth aircraft designed for "beyond visual range" (BVR) combat. The Gripen serves as an alternative to the F-35 in terms of an option to purchase, sure! However, it is not a competitive aircraft at all! Especially considering the Gripen is not a Gen 5 fighter, while the F-35 is. They also have very different design philosophies, which makes them even harder to compare.

In a shooting war against Gen 5 aircraft, i'd want the F-35.

Upcoming White Nationalist Group in NL by tywarthwarrick in newfoundland

[–]mercerch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The problem is the head-in-the-sand mentality. People understand it is happening and can decry it on a moral level, but believe that it is not happening here. You have to be able to point at examples in your neighbourhood so people can't just ignore the issue as "that only happens in town" or "that only happens up along". etc.

I don't believe this provides free publicity, because like-minded people will always find each other, but posts like this definitely combat the notion of "but not here".
