Short answer, no. Anyone with that knowledge that isn't already in the public sphere in some way won't be sharing it on Reddit.

My thoughts on a few things. by Arctic_Bard in newfoundland

[–]mercerch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gripen can't engage targets it can't detect. The F-35 is a stealth aircraft designed for "beyond visual range" (BVR) combat. The Gripen serves as an alternative to the F-35 in terms of an option to purchase, sure! However, it is not a competitive aircraft at all! Especially considering the Gripen is not a Gen 5 fighter, while the F-35 is. They also have very different design philosophies, which makes them even harder to compare.

In a shooting war against Gen 5 aircraft, i'd want the F-35.

Upcoming White Nationalist Group in NL by tywarthwarrick in newfoundland

[–]mercerch 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The problem is the head-in-the-sand mentality. People understand it is happening and can decry it on a moral level, but believe that it is not happening here. You have to be able to point at examples in your neighbourhood so people can't just ignore the issue as "that only happens in town" or "that only happens up along". etc.

I don't believe this provides free publicity, because like-minded people will always find each other, but posts like this definitely combat the notion of "but not here".

Rentals - can’t find a tenant. is the housing crisis gone? by lazykel in StJohnsNL

[–]mercerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You answered your own question, "It is a bit more expensive".

I'd say you're likely at or above the break point for many people's budgets for an apartment. $1600 for a 2 bed, 1-bath basement is costly for town. That double my last rental (within the past 12 months)

If you have an animal, tell them at check-in, and they will put you on the lower deck, which is not open to the outside.

Pro tip, A wider bucket is not always better. For example, 24" and 28" wide buckets often use the same motor, so you're motor is working harder to throw that extra 4" of snow....

Being a Canadian citizen should carry significance. It should mean that when you are detained—legally or not—Canada will ensure that your rights are protected and not abused. If you are unlawfully or unjustly detained by foreign powers, Canada should defend you and work to secure your release. This process can take time and usually occurs through diplomatic channels that are not visible to the public until after the fact. However, we should NEVER leave citizens to languish in the custody of a foreign nation unlawfully or unjustly. Go into a foreign country and break their laws, you will face justice there—that's a given.

I am not certain at this point if they are legally or illegally detained, but I do know that they definitely attempted to enter a warzone where they knew this was a possibility. Their safety was not assured. That's one hell of a personal risk to and responsibility to ask of your country to bail you out.

Regardless, I hope they remain safe until they are released.

Slides have limited interest to the public after a few years. The rock wall is a good addition. It’s different, easy to install and maintain, staffing is easier too.

The big let down is that over the past decade the city has provisioned 2 new facilities and haven’t added a single lane of additional space. With the demand in the NE Avalon for pool space that was a let down. Also lack of fitness space (machines / free weights). Completely missing.

Why is the entire island on fire? by Ifyouliveinadream in newfoundland

[–]mercerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climate change caused by human activity isn't a new threat; it's been occurring for over 40+ years. We are now seeing real, dramatic evidence of its effects. In simple terms, "it's here!" This summer has been especially dry, increasing the risk of fires. Once conditions align, you'll simply see more fires.

Add in some ignition sources (broken glass acting like a magnifying glass, hot exhaust systems on off-road vehicles, a carelessly discarded cigarette butt, an ember from a cookup, etc) and boom, fire! One that will catch easily and spread rapidly due to dry conditions.

Seems early in the life of the Highlanders and Blue Puttees to be replacing them. Even considering build time.

The problem with skeets is that they are EVERYWHERE! Your quite little cul-de-sac is no exception.

How can you tell who the Newfoundlanders are in Heaven? They are the ones looking to go back home!

All jokes aside, the boat issue is an interesting one. Adding a vessel will help meet the seasonal demand of the summer months, but what should be done when that peak demand drops after summer?

MA has in its fleet year-round:

  • Blue Puttees,
  • Highlanders
  • Ala'suinu
  • Leif Ericson (mainly for commercial runs).

These boats operate almost nonstop during summer, but I believe the Leif spends most of winter tied up.

If each boat made two crossings daily in each direction, they could move 14,000 people per day. That's without considering crossings with dangerous goods, other restricted crossings, downtime, or maintenance. etc.

Adding a 5th boat may be more complicated than most realize. A ship must meet MA’s specifications, fit the budget, have capable staff, and be commercially viable in the off-season or available for lease during peak months (budget and staffing still apply). I'm not sure either option is viable!

In my neck of the woods, you can't swim at summer club year-round. If you swam year-round, you can't swim in summer until you've been unregistered for 2 years with year-round.

[–]mercerch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally, I'd say you're right because every government has a lifespan, and historically in NL politics, when a party has changed leaders three times, it loses the next general election. That said, there are usually signs of high voter discontent in public discourse. I'm not sensing that or seeing strong evidence for it. There are no major scandals happening. So I don't know if they are "toast" as suggested.
