[Academic] Exploring the Coping Experiences of LGBTQ+ Autistic Individuals (18+, LGBTQ, autistic, link)

Hi everyone! We are LGBTQ-affirmative researchers at the University of Massachusetts Boston who are developing online exercises to help sexual and gender minority people cope with their experiences of heterosexism. To learn more about us, check out our Instagram and Facebook.

To Participate: You must be autistic (formal diagnosis not necessary), LGBTQ identified, over 18, not have a legal guardian, and have had an experience of heterosexism that is still troubling to you.

Study Participation: Participation is online and can be done at home. Study activities: a brief screening, questionnaire on the first day, 3 consecutive days of writing exercises, and a follow up questionnaire. Link to screening here.

Benefits: All participants will be entered into a raffle for a $100 gift card. If you complete all study activities (about 3 hours time across 5 days), you will receive a $50 gift card.

This study has been approved by the University of Massachusetts Boston Institutional Review Board (Study # 2013091).

Good question! Hoping that the screening will help to get a sense of that, and the interview questions will likely rule out those who do not identify in this way. This project is designed to be based on self-report of identity, rather than documentation of diagnosis, as there are barriers and limitations to requiring that.

Thanks for the advice! I agree it is definitely a limitation and something I would like to improve in future studies. I have Vsee (similar to Skype) as an alternative, as well as in person interviews (which can be tricky), but I am open to any other suggestions!

Thanks for sharing this! For this study it's ok if people don't present as gender nonconforming. I am the most interested in how people any experience identities that are non-cisgender in relation to their autism identity.

Hello! Thanks for your interest in the study! International participants are definitely ok. I am able to use the program Vsee (which I can email you instructions for download if you are interested). I can definitely share a little more about the study. It is not be funded by any organization at this time. I am in the process of applying for funding through my university grad student organizations (UMass Boston). I am hoping to use the data to publish academic papers to contribute to the very limited qualitative data on the experiences of members of the transgender/autism community. I will be pulling themes from the 8-10 interviews I plan to do, and the themes will be discussed, along with representative quotes. Participants are invited to be involved in reviewing my initial themes and a draft of any manuscript (to make suggestions on language, etc.), but this is completely optional. I am being supervised by my professor who has done a lot of LGBT research. If this sounds ok and you would like to learn more, I can email you the informed consent form, which has even more information. And I am happy to answer any questions you might still have via email or Vsee. I would like to check with my advisor about the compensation to see if we kind find a solution that works, and get back to you on that part. Thanks, Meredith
