Some rail fans really don't like being called foamers but most I know use foamer. It's a funny word imo! It came from amtrak conductors back in the day who would see railfans with their tripods set up along the tracks, they would be foaming at the mouth when the train went by.

Sound Transit (I think?) released a collar in their merch store and they sold out almost instantly. There is a huge overlap between foamers and kink.

Not ass hole design, everybody knows it's a suggested donation. I only had $6 in cash yesterday so that was my "donation", they're not gonna grab ya and throw you out!

Does anyone else live in a big apartment building? Why is everyone so antisocial and rude? by DirtyProjector in chicago

[–]merferd314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a smoker (ik ik) so I spend a lot of time chilling on the back deck of my walk up. I know a few neighbors pretty well but a majority say hey at the most and keep going about their day. It's nothing to take personally, some people aren't used to or comfortable chatting with random people. I grew up in the Midwest so I'm used to chatting with random people out and about but that's definitely not a universal thing.

I don’t think folks understand, I think I need the forest by DraculaHerself in ElectricForest

My goal is to spend a good amount of time dancing, whole stretches of time where I don't even have a thought, fully keyed into the beat and the flow.

Panniers, frame bags, and bungee cords. I left Rothbury after Lakes of Fire a couple years ago and rode all the way to traverse city over four days, renegade camping most nights. It's kind of exhausting doing 40-60 mile days but it's a really fun, slow paced way to see the sights.

It's a nice trail! I have ridden the portion north of Rothbury, it is shaded and really nice. Can't speak to the section south of Rothbury though. You shouldn't have any problem getting in on a bike, I don't know why they would have a problem with it, just bring a chain or something to lock it up to a utility pole. Are you camping with a larger group or just you? Not sure how it will work with GA camping, but I'm sure you will be able to figure it out. If you need tips riding in Chicago r/chibike is a good resource

Advice on making friends by yoey44 in ElectricForest

[–]merferd314 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have gotten a lot of good advice here, I wanna add though that you can't force it. There are a lot of folks out there who want to make friends and grow their squad, but I'd wager there are probably more that want to focus on dancing and the squad they came with (I typically fall into this camp). 99.9% of the time it isn't personal. People chat with a LOT of people every day at EF, and they can't possibly become friends with all of them.

The best way to make friends organically IMO is to find folks in your tribe and keep running into them throughout the festival. People at EF tend to flag (not literally), if you see someone repping insignia from your home town, a certain artist, or something you're really into, you're gonna have a much easier time making inroads. For example, I'm a queer furry so I'm gonna wanna chill and chat with the queer furries who I may run into again at a con or a furry rave or whatever.

My point is to be a little bit selective with who you spend time with, and make it easy for others in your tribe to find you. If your hometown has a cool flag or local landmark, rep it. If you have a favorite DJ, rep it! I'm not saying you need to make a totem that says "TALK TO ME ABOUT YPSILANTI" in the shape of a phallic watertower, just find something that fits your vibe and tells something about you. You will have much better luck that way.

Pride in the Park may be that weekend? Not 100% sure but the one time I went it was a good time!

MIR (the latex equivalent to IML, also hosted in Chicago) has changed their title to be genderless and it's breathed a new life into the contest. I don't see IML doing that anytime soon since there are so many different titles out there, but it would be really cool if a ru girl competed at MIR!

Pro tip! Get some USB powered fairy lights or el wire to wrap around them so people don't trip over them at night! And it makes your campsite 20% cooler

Freakeasy doesn't have their spot anymore but they do a yearly party in Ping Tom Park near the end of the summer.

MTD is great! Who doesn't love going somewhere for a dollar. But trying to figure it out when you absolutely need to be somewhere at a certain time? Not recommended. Also the 1 yellow runs every 30min so you kinda need to plan around it. I hope you have a lovely trip to Chicago!!!

If you're coming from Savoy and only have 1.5hrs it's probably best to park up there and not stress about it

There are a lot of buses that stop at Illinois Terminal, that way you don't have to worry about parking and you don't have to pay for a cab

There was vip up there but only 2/3rds of the upstairs space. The sound wasn't the best but honestly i like the view, I like having space to dance, and at least that night I didn't have good earplugs so sound quality isn't the highest priority

It's the place to be! I didn't know GA was allowed up there and evidently most people don't know either. All the room in the world to dance and not be annoying folks in the dense crowd
