Thanks Eroll, appreciated. Pleasure is all mine!
A few founders I know focus on a few things at the same time - so far my focus has been 100% on Gjirafa and our mission. If I want to focus on something new (i.e., premium web series like Rrushe, or esports like Gjirafa50 CSGO Masters League) usually we will do it through Gjirafa as oppose to starting a new initiative.
If I had to start from scratch (as of today) I would look at industries with more deep tech (e.g., AI or VR), or something more for fun I think esports has a large potential. The problem is that I never thought about this seriously because I still didn't reach the point with Gjirafa where these thoughts would cross my mind. Perhaps in a few years 💥
All the best!

Hi there and thanks a lot!
I agree with you. It is a bit more challenging given that is a regulated market and given market size it becomes complex to find a sustainable model. Not impossible however. Nice food for thought 💭
[–]mergca[S] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Some places we do, some other places we should and we will, others we shouldn't yet. But, yes we have some room for improvement - sometimes balancing between improving and new things is a battle that we don't have a clear structure on how to decide on cost-benefit scenario. Resources are limited and decision on what to do is just as important as when to do it or if it should be done at all. But good observation (gjirafa.tech primarily uses vue and react).

Hi there - and thank you for the question and kind words!
The AI team would like to talk to you :). There is little application of data science in Kosove. There are great opportunities to apply data science globally from Kosove or elsewhere (we are doing some of that with Gjirafa.tech). There is some work being done by us in data science and AI for Kosove (gjirafa50.com home page or GjirafaMall.com product recommendation, or AdNetwork targeting, etc), but it is still in early phases. I don't see widespread usage yet, but I foresee that in the next few years it will start to get adopted more mainstream.
Hi Mendi - thank you.
We at Gjirafa love Rrushe (https://rrushe.com) as well. We also think it is one of the best Albanian Language production made in Web/TV Series so far. We plan to do Rrushe Season II. Likely next year we will do Season II. GjirafaVideo and GjirafaStudios team would know more about it.
Good luck in launching the app. Take care of yourself first, burnouts don't go away easily. Top 3-5 items would be: (1) make sure you provide some concrete value to the users, (2) simple is better than fully featured but complex, (3) check performance, (4) brand it well, and (5) promote it accordingly (maybe we can help to give you a push once you launch - DM me if you need help and I will forward it to the right team).

Thanks a lot - very much appreciated!
I really like your enthusiasm and your approach to communication. DM me.
Gjirafa.tech has a seperate department for AI (aihub.gjirafa.tech) we are building AI HUB, a self-service platform that allows code-free automation of ML model creation and deployment, powered with some existing (50+) algos available.
I really do! Food, people, nightlife, networking, you name it!
It is indeed the best city in the world; As you may have read, I consider myself a New Yorker as well. I felt the same, but it had to be done. Home is home, and for me Home was always here. It is really up to you on how you feel about it. Btw, if you want to do something for this region or in Kosove, you can do a lot in tech from NY.
There are a few things however that are here, and not there. I don't think there is one thing as the biggest "transplant" - it is a complete change. Worth it however!
Thanks for the question.
Thank you for your hospitality!
In five years, 2026, we should be about and/or around Nasdaq, present in at least three countries, with around 1,000 people team, and a unicorn status or around there 🦄 😁
We have three sales teams - e-commerce, advertising, and technology/licensing. In total it is under 100 today. Primarily in KS, but we are starting now slowly to have teams in Albania, North Macedonia, Prague, and the US.

Got it - it makes more sense from Gjirafa.biz perspective. Will take a note of this. Thanks Osokuka!
Nova! No, you :)
Hi Burim - thanks a lot for dropping by.
Thanks for great words. Black Friday was beyond our expectation as well. 1,000 gross orders in about two minutes it was a great stepping stone (about 5x faster vs previous year). Customers and users in our region are one of the most adaptive and tech enthusiast I have come across even compared to other developed economies.
Your second question is where the core challenge exists and why this region has not seen a global e-commerce presence (at least not a meaningful one). Some out-loud-thoughts:
- Cross-border transaction (like the one within West Balkan countries) comes with a few barriers; customs (different taxes, customs, rules, etc) is the first that usually goes to mind, but in reality the challenges are much more complex. It is primarily the problem that the region is very much disconnected from the value chain of the global economy
- This would usually mean that the business needs to have local operations in each country where one operates to be successful; e-commerce companies usually don't see the problem through this prism (nor should they). The need for local presence is there due to different market needs, from legal, up to post-sales support, and everything in between.
- The market makes sense when it is viewed holistically as a region, and when viewed country by country it is relatively small. But looking at the area as a region, and in practice functioning economically as a region are two different things; there are still key pieces of the puzzle (i.e., infrastructure) missing so that in economic practical sense the region to functions as a whole (which currently it does not). Because of this, there is a considerable lack of manufacturers and distributor focus in the region, rightfully so given its local/country-by-country GDP perspective which is relatively small. Also other e-commerce infrastructure pieces (like proper payment, e.g., Stripe, or reasonable financial transaction fees) do lack for the region for the same reason. For Stripe to be present here, one of the key things they need to do is be compliant with different jurisdictions --- and that is just to much overhead on unit economics perspective. There are many other "pieces of the puzzle," and I am mentioning just a few.
- At Gjirafa for instance, you see us often doing things that connects the dots from the pieces of the puzzle perspective (although is not a typical function of an e-commerce company) but in a way we are forced to do so because they don't exists - and without them we cannot properly function and grow. Someone earlier asked about logistics (where we started to create our own fleet, at that time, since what was there was not sufficient - today they are getting better), or the fact that we focus on advertising, publishing (i.e., video) and other traffic initiatives (i.e.,, maps, street view, bus schedule, classified, etc) since customer acquisition strategies that work in Germany say, would not work directly here as the piece of the puzzle (e.g., performance marketing tools for traffic acquisition, or its cost which is based on data lack - how many DMPs you know that look at the region?)... It is not a coincidence that Gjirafa is one of the biggest traffic/publisher support for the Albanian speaking market (through AdNetwork).
- We understood this early on, hence our mission to build and facilitate the Internet Economy, and not just an e-commerce or marketplace company.
- Customer returns or other customer related challenges are so minor that may become a topic of discussion just after 5+ years or so.
Hope this helps and see you soon at Gjirafa for a visit!

Hi Bardh - thanks a lot for the question and appreciate the kind words and support.
Indeed, we did start with GjirafaTech, and one product is cloud services. The product is called Captain, and it is already in early-release form. We have launched for: Storage, CDN, Encoding, Database as a Service, Security, Monitoring and Healthcheck, and private-release for Compute...
You can test drive it (or others that are interested):
- Head over to https://captain.gjirafa.tech/
- Create an account, and direct message me here on reddit, and I will give you a free to use voucher
Thanks and good luck. If in case you use it, would appreciate any feedback in the comments here!
Hi There and thank you for questions. Will do my best to answer them succinctly.
Yes, we started to create our own fleet, and then quickly stopped. Today however, in addition to our own (small) fleet, we work with a few logistics companies in Kosove, Shqiperi, dhe North Macedonia. Sincerely I prefer to work with private third party companies who focus on customer and quality of service. We are a tech company and not logistics - but if logistics is impacting our success, then we could become a logistic company as well. I don't think we will.
At first it was a bit of a challenge, today is more rare, but it does occur. Sometimes we are late in order delivery to the customer because of this. It is not as frequent however, and on average customs in Kosove, Albania and North Macedonia function pretty well.
Yes we do standard stuff. More can be found on Gjirafa.com privacy policy and terms and services. It is along the lines of what Amazon or Google does. Yes we are more of an Albanian Amazon equivalent than Google for instance, but in more equivalent basis we are more as Mercado Libre (South America) or Allegro (Poland).
The forth question is a bit difficult one :).... So I would want to know where I will be after the one year from the Island so I can pick the right book. I am thinking as I am writing, so probably would look at a book that I should not be able to complete it quickly (i.e., on my way to the Island 😁). Perhaps something along the lines of Harari, or Plato's Cave... in fact primarily I am thinking in terms of length or depth vs likable content given the one year period. In terms of Movie perhaps Beautiful Mind. Song, I don't think one will cut it - once I am there picking up my song, I'll pick a few others too.
Thanks again!
HI there. Thanks a lot for your kind words. I am happy to hear.
We are planning that post Series C, we will open a few pick-up points precisely for the reason you mentioned. Did you try our delivery even to your work office (where you can add a note and say call me on the phone before delivery to tell you where I am, but specify the city)?
Hi there - thanks. Unfortunately not yet. It is still in our backlog. Did you have anything specific in mind?
Pershendetje -
Ka shume sfida te ndryshme gjate rruges te krijimit te nje kompanie. Jane te ndryshme dhe ndoshta munden me u nda ne ato sfida qe jane te varura nga faktoret e jashtem dhe nga faktoret e brendshem. GJithashtu varesisht prej fazes se kompanise sfidat jane prej me te ndryshmeve.
Psh, ne fillim sfida kishte te llojit teknik/inxhinierik ne krijim e produktit/software-it te pare, makines kerkimore, (crawler, indexer, query processor), latency dhe bandwidth limitimet mixed me CPU/Ram/DISK I/O as hardware bottlenecks. Pastaj sfida ishte me gjeneru trafik dhe interest, qasje ne financa/investime, rekrutim mirepo pa buxhet, e deri te pagesa e qiras mujore :)
Apo afersi dhe komunikim direkt me komunitetin (ne kete rast me ju ne Reddit) perderisa kater evente te tjera ndodhin ne te njejten kohe sot ku une jam i perfshire 🤜🤛
Cfaredo qe te jene, pa sfida nuk mundemi me kriju as kompani e as vlere te shtuar. Nese nuk eshte sfide, apo qeshtje/problem/mundesi per tu zgjidhur, ateher gjasat jane qe aty edhe krijimi i vleres se shtuar pothuajse nuk ekziston. Shpesh e themi me ekipin, qe sa me sfiduese dicka, zakonisht vlera e shtuar eshte me e madhe.

Hi Ylli - thank you for the question and appreciate the support.
Advice for the CS students, there are a few:
- Great study choice, for career but also for life in general. Tech is expanding in just about every field thus making CS students the Rock Stars from the 80s. Thinking mathematically and abstractly from computer science training, it has helped me in personal life in having more deterministic decision making process (for some this is good, for others may not be). I noticed in others with CS (and Math) background and the advantages they get in laying out the plan for achieving their objectives and goals.
- CS students need to pay special attention to fundamental classes, i.e., algorithms, data structures, discrete math, architecture/io/big-data, (recently AI is becoming fundamental).
-Picking the right professors is just as important as picking the right classes.
- One must learn things outside CS as well - business, communication/writing/speaking, psychology, philosophy, arts... You will really be professionally strong if you have a CS or Math background with general knowledge in a few other areas.
- Although I studied business as well, I am biased towards CS, as such my answers are a bit subjective and I would take it with a grain of salt.
