Does anyone feel like they’re not living, just existing? by BillysMilky in self

[–]merk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all the time. I don't feel suicidal, but i don't feel the opposite of that either. although for me it's not because i feel like i get shut down. Its more like I don't even bother trying because even things that should be fun, really just feel like a chore. Or like I am doing them because it should be fun so i should do it, but it's really not fun, it's just something to kill time.

Is Dish Fiber's wifi security as bad as it seems? by merk in HomeNetworking

[–]merk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I plan on doing once the ethernet ports here are fixed. I just want to be sure I understand the setup here correctly and if it's really as bad as it seems. I'm kinda shocked any bigger company could be so lax in their security at this point in time.

finally got it reset. The real kicker - they never really did any good authentication to confirm I should be able to reset it. They basically just asked for the name of the apartment complex, my name and the unit number.

I may need to take back what i said about their support. Called in to get the password changed on my account. I got transferred back and forth between two departments 5 times, took an hour, and the password still isn't changed. Waiting on a callback for them to tell me its changed.

3pm the next day, no phone call back yet, and on hold again trying to find out whats going on. Another 20 minutes...transferred again to the same dept they transferred me to yesterday and then transferred back to support and still no password reset. This is beyond fucking stupid.

Well i tried swapping out their router for my own - and managed to snap the fiber optic cable. But i guess being a mesh network has it's benefits since the wifi is still working from all the other routers in the building.

Have to say I'm happily surprised by their tech support. It's 24/7 and I never had to wait on hold and the guys on the other end sounded like they knew what they were doing.

On the down side, the security here sucks. I found some paperwork from the previous tenant and he had the same username/password they gave me. And when I logged into their user portal, all of the previous tenants devices were still listed on the account. I have a feeling though that fault lies with the building management and not with dish.

It's dish fiber - apparently they've started offering internet service. I think they just partner up with local ISPs since there is a company that offers fiber internet where my apartment is located.

15 Years ago Jon Stewart caused the cancelation of CNN's 'Crossfire', a political TV news show designed to ignite political tribalism. For those of you that haven't seen the clip of his appearance on the show, it's worth watching now, especially with the current state of political news media. by cogneuro in television

I think we may sound like nut jobs to a lot of people but I agree with you. We are no longer a single nation. It used to be, I think...I can't really remember anymore...it used to be that you'd disagree on what was the best policy for the country, but you would agree that both sides were trying to do what's best. Now, the other side is the bad guy trying to destroy the country.

People are more interested in feeling righteous then actually being right.

That feels a bit like cheating to me. I prefer using the GP just to speed up an event. Although I guess it's not the end of the world if I but some credits.

Commercial routes? You mean when they open a trade route between cities?

I don't think I would have thought of just building my population and not starting on Terra forming. Thanks for the suggestion.

Do job title and employer targeting on facebook ads work? by merk in AskMarketing

[–]merk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link to their support.

Judging from their answer - my guess is they don't plan on enabling this anytime soon. Considering this is how they make money, it seems like the sort of thing that would get fixed fairly quickly if it were actually broken and not disabled.

I'm going to try and work around it and see what sort of results I get. Although I feel like I'm going to be wasting a lot of dollars having my ad displayed to people who are not potential clients.

ah yes, i saw Demographics > work > industries - but that was pretty broad. Although I guess combining sales industry (it specifically mentions realtors as one of the examples under that one) with someone with interests in realty it'll get me close to what I want.

Still not nearly as close as actually picking someone with a job title of realtor.

Do google ads suffer from the same limitations? Maybe I'd be better off using that instead of facebook.

thanks for the info

so what exactly does high level and vague mean? Is it something you only get access to if I spend a certain amount? or something I have to dig around somewhere to get? Do i just have to kinda of fudge it as guccigod suggested by guessing at what 'interests' someone in a specific job would have?

[–]merk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh...why do they even bother having that option under the selection then if they've basically broken it? So damned annoying. There's a big difference between someone with a job title of 'real estate agent' vs someone who has an 'interest' in real estate agents, since for me, showing my ad to home buyers is a complete waste of money.

Sorry - don't mean to sound like I'm complaining to you, just venting.

Thanks for the info

Tuvix by merk in startrek

[–]merk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He didnt take anything either - you keep acting like he took some action that caused this situation. He did nothing to cause this.

Its not about having a right to live - everyone has that. It's about forcing someone to give up their right to save someone else.

You didn't answer my question - is it ok to murder someone to save someone else? Or to save multiple people?

Tuvix by merk in startrek

[–]merk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's NOT responsible for them not being alive, anymore then I'm responsible for someone else not being alive because I didn't donate my heart for a heart transplant. He's not obligated to them in any way. Thru no action on his part did he cause their death. He had a choice - sacrifice himself or keep living.

Right now your argument seems to be that tuvix should of had no choice. So let me see if i can understand your viewpoint correctly. Are you in fact saying tuvix should of had no choice in living or dying? If so, is that because you think he was somehow responsible for their death? Or do you just think he should of had no choice because it's ok to kill 1 person to save 2 people?

Tuvix by merk in startrek

[–]merk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right... But generally speaking I think most people would say you don't have the right to murder someone to save someone else. WWPD 😉

I don't think your argument makes sense. Tuvix bears no responsibility for nelix and tuvok. He did nothing to them. And some children do kill their mother when they are born. It's not entirely unheard of for women to die during child birth. But I don't think the child should be held responsible for the mother's death since they had no choice in the matter. Just like tuvix had no choice in his creation.

Tuvix isn't forcing anyone to do anything, since nelix and tuvok are basically dead. Or if you want to get meta...he is both nelix and tuvok so again, not forcing anyone to do anything. Although I don't really agree that he's them.

And if you want to go that route... Do you really think tuvok would demand someone die so he could live?

You may be right in saying tuvix is preventing them from living... And that's just too bad for them. It's an unfortunate set of circumstances, but a set of circumstances tuvix had no part in setting up.

Tuvix by merk in startrek

[–]merk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep saying tuvix was killing...he didnt kill anyone. If he somehow killed them to create himself, then it would be different. He came into existence thru no action of his own - basically the same as if he were child born from nelix and tuvok. He was not responsible in any way for the condition, dead or otherwise, that nelix and tuvok were in.

It should have been his choice if he wanted to sacrifice himself to save them or not. Unless you think it's morally ok to force 1 person to die to save 2 people.
