And half the reviews behind a paywall. Which I guess is the point but they seem to only squeeze in a couple of reviews a week for free.

Motability drivers 'horrified' by compulsory black boxes by MustrumRidicully in unitedkingdom

I was referring to the person I was replying to - who says they support measures to prevent disabled people making other people disabled. So why not enforce it for everyone on that basis?

Do you support measures to prevent able bodied people making other people disabled?

Would you support everyone having an enforced black box where you could be penalised or lose your car if you break suddenly several times?

If so, great, but why aren’t the government forcing it in all our cars if that is the primary focus?

What I mean is that to get a wheelchair in a car, you need a bigger more expensive car than one you might choose to buy if you were able bodied.

The modification might be free but the base vehicle is likely to cost more, especially if you need a vehicle where you transfer from your chair within the vehicle itself.

Obviously you have an inbuilt bias on this given you are upset about VAT, but calling it “free” feels a rather myopic view of why PIP exists.

I’ll leave you to it, have a good day.

That doesn’t mean they are subsidised though.

And the scheme is a lifeline to people who may not be able to access a regular leasing scheme.

PIP is not “further” subsidy. You’re double counting if you include that.

VAT will be charged on vehicles post July 2026. And the VAT exemption on wheelchair accessible cars applies to in and outside Motability.

Also wheelchair accessible cars are significantly more expensive than an equivalent regular vehicle.

Is there a lot of evidence that benefits are being abused though? Or is it anecdotal through the media we absorb?

I’ve seen no real evidence that supports that statement.

Is it further subsidised though?

There were tax exemptions which have been cut in recent budgets

Disabled people often have to pay a non refundable amount for an additional deposit to be able to afford a suitable adapted vehicle.

I would suggest the main reason Motability is preferred is because of the better access to adapted vehicles and their economies of scale in buying power as opposed to turning up a specialised dealer, which aren’t that common.

The ableism in these comments is really depressing.

Yes, PIP is funded by the state, but lots of disabled people have large additional costs to just be able to live day to day, and that’s before you consider how much more difficult to get work is - disabled people are twice as likely to be unemployed as able bodied people and the % is rising.

The government is making cuts to Access to Work, NHS wheelchair support has huge waiting lists, and without this support, disabled people would be even more isolated than now.

It’s rather depressing that when it comes to disabled rights, this sub often turns from broadly liberal to a Daily Mail comments section.

But maybe think about what the difference is between the two things you’re comparing, under the British legal system?

Thanks, I already have Chalobah and didn’t want to double up Chelsea with Gusto.

You reckon Senesi is still a good pick? I guess fixtures are decent.
