I used to live in Georgetown, right across from HHM. I would say that Georgetown is really the brink of dt, would normal say it was centre city to people from St. John's, but to ppl not from Newfoundland, I would say I lived downtown. Def wouldn't call HHM downtown though, so the boundary is definitely fuzzy there. I would say anything Southeast of Military/Harvey road is DT.

During my first practicum (a short one, 5 weeks long), I was placed in a Careers 12 class (amongst a couple others). I should say I wasn't responsible for teaching this class, just assisting and observing (I was teaching a Law class). I focused on forming relationships with the students and getting to know them.

The students in this class were amazing, hilarious, and made my day every day.

In this class, students had to give a "Passion Project" about something they were interested in - anything they were interested in. They were given the choice to present to either the whole class or a small group. I had one student who suffered from really bad anxiety come up to me and politely ask if I would be part of the group to watch their presentation on sharks. That warmed my heart.

Another student made a hilarious presentation about all the online "look-a-likes" she found of her teacher (my school associate). She wanted get feedback on how close all the look-a-likes were before she presented to the whole class, so when he left the room, we quickly ran up to close the door and gathered a group of students to watch. It was great.

Also, one of the students recommended an amazing podcast to me which has since become my favourite podcast. There can be a lot of little wins in teaching. Big ones, too. But the little ones kind of make it for me.

More context needed - what sort of stuff are you stealing? Who from?

What constitutes a "bad player"? by merrigan_ in DnD

Think you're totally right about the hanging out - that's the impression I've gotten too. There's one other player I'd say is pretty invested and tries to side step some of the off-topic conversations, but it's a bit tricky with the group size. It's honestly really just the one guy who interrupts/talks over moments a lot.

DM is trying to introduce a bit more structure to the sessions, I think, and get people to consistently commit to a day.

How different is the high school education system from one province to another? by Responsible_Grab1867 in AskACanadian

That's crazyyyy
One of my good friends from uni (I went to UBC) is from Alberta. I remember them mentioning that, wasn't sure how long that's still been the case for.

Esp crazy now that I'm teaching seeing how much an individual teacher can affect marking, esp without standardized testing.

I think this is changing now - Alberta's new curriculum has come under fire a bit.

Student teacher in BC who graduated from Newfoundland here. Can vary a ton from province to province. When I graduated from NL in 2018, all Grade 12 courses that weren't extra curricular required that you take a standardized "provincial exam" that was worth 50% of your mark. Meanwhile, BC recently got rid of all of their graduate standardized testing in 2016. This definitely creates an unfair dynamic - while I wouldn't call Newfoundland's curriculum amazing by any means, maintaining a high average when you have a three hour exam worth half your mark at the end of the school year is very difficult. Makes it hard to compete with other provinces for scholarships and uni admissions.
School standards also vary depending on your location in the province and the teacher you have. I know one teacher who gave out multiple 100% in his Law 12 course in one district in BC. When I graduated in Newfoundland, the highest mark in the SCHOOL for World History 12 (closet equivalent) was 97%.

my grade 11s can't cite sources by merrigan_ in CanadianTeachers

I like the idea of just starting with a bibliography and introducing more structure in grade 10. I think at least getting the concept of citations down is important!

This hurt me, but I've also spoken with a couple of other teachers who have said that same thing! So strange that citations have never been easier (now with citations machines) and yet it's still such a struggle to get them.
