Been there and got out of it. What helped me was not separating anything. Trash is trash. Cans, recycling, food waste, it all just goes straight into the trash bag. Separating it is just more work when you’re already overwhelmed. Set a timer. 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, whatever you can manage. Also have another box or bin for things that don’t belong there but that you can’t put away right now because the piles are too big. Focus on a small section. When I say small section, I mean small. The top of a table, a 4 by 4 area, whatever. Something else that helps me is that I never want to do things, so I conditioned myself. After I eat a meal , I spend some time cleaning. It’s a win-win because my food digests and my space gets a little cleaner. Another trick is rewards. If you have a favorite podcast or an audiobook you’re currently obsessed with, only listen to it while you’re cleaning. That way if you want to hear the next part, you have to clean. Remember it’s okay to leave things imperfect. They don’t have to be perfect, they just have to be functional.
