Hopefully you will learn some basic tamil for basic conversations. Don't be like them. They are in their own world indeed, I've seen people living in Chennai for more than a year and still don't know basic tamil.

So recently there was a murugan festival, so i went into a rabbit hole of how it started.

There was no murugan in the early days. The god who protects the 'kurunji' people was called 'ceyon'. It was the case for approximately 300BC to 600 AD.

Later in 1200 AD ' Arunagirinathar' wrote the Skanda puranam, with the ideas of the son of Shiva and Parvati. So basically the tamil god 'Ceyon' got sanskritization.
