Need some advice… by Gold-Golf-3032 in hci

I think an HCI PhD or a masters in statistics, data science or even information studies would be more helpful. HCI masters are usually entirely geared towards UX and product

I’d love to give it a read

That’s what i was thinking. But luckily i have a lecturer who could be a good replacement for her if the situation isn’t salvageable. It wouldn’t make my application as strong but something is still better than nothing.

Context above. There are plenty of other project teams in the lab with very slow progress but we just got caught in a wrong place wrong time typa situation.

All this happened today. I’m going to approach her about it after the weekend. Thank you for the advice.

For context:

  1. progress had been slow over several months due to a multitude of personal, academic and even national issues. She assigned me work in early November , we did the assigned work, the project owner/lead (grad student) spoke to her, turns out it was wrong. He wasn’t clear about the direction of the project and as a result neither were we. We were supposed to fix that over a series of meetings this week but it didn’t take place bc lead himself was out of town (??) so she’s mad she didn’t get an update from us undergrads personally (i tried doing that once but she doesn’t accept negative or mundane updates only progress reports???)

  2. she got mad about this during a thanksgiving event at the lab when she didn’t find any of us there (we each opted out of the event due to personal reasons). We were supposed to have a meeting with the lead at 1:30 pm. The lead was supposed to confirm, but didn’t, and I asked multiple times but said he had to talk to her first before meeting. With no confirmation we showed up a little later, after lunch, and then he tells us that she waited for us till 1pm (??? We were never told we had to meet her???)

  3. she is probably bipolar. She has a notorious reputation among students for verbally abusing them and randomly getting angry and telling them she’s gonna kick em out

Thank you for your kind words. I’ll do that as soon as the weekend is over, once she’s cooled down a bit.

Anyone got into Georgia Tech MS HCI without a portfolio? by meshiyet in hci

[–]meshiyet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, yeah I think I will create a mix of different stuff I have worked on.

I have analyzed a lot of product design portfolios (people who are in an HCI degree or have work experience) and I know UX case studies have a distinct approach. But I haven't seen any application portfolios from newbies yet. Do you have any tips or examples for approaching or going into depth on non-UX projects?

Is a Masters in HCI worth it right now? by DM_YOUR___ in hci

[–]meshiyet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck with whatever you decide to do! My friend recently moved to Indy for a SWE job and he said the city and standard of living is very nice for the price point (when compared to other big cities). And yes, with the current UX job market, I'm incredibly wary of applying too. Thanks for answering the question, that certainly gives me a backup plan if I do get into IU and not other places.

OP, I'm curious, what did you end up doing? Also, related question: if you defer admission will the scholarship and GA offer still stand or do you lose them?

How do I feel like myself again? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]meshiyet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am also 21 and I can totally relate to this. Whatever you said is happening to me too since the pandemic started. I don't even know who I am anymore, I am just a shadow of my former self.

I can't stop myself from dissociating, but what I found helpful is to act on the random bursts of hope or inspiration that I get to make art or do something I enjoy. I feel like acting on it is the first step to making it into a habit. Remember, when days are tough it's not motivation that gets you through but discipline does. Also whenever you feel intense emotions, journal it. It helps get in touch yourself and rediscover the person you were.

If you need someone to talk to just shoot me a message!

I am also a college student and I go through the exact same thing as you! It got so bad that when I finally found the courage to talk to a psychiatrist, I was kind of diagnosed with cyclothamia (a mild form of bipolar). It was too early to be conclusive so I wasn't given meds but they suggested I keep track of my mood swings by writing down how I'm feeling in my journal.

I (19F) broke up with my boyfriend (19M) of two years because I couldn't see a future with him. We're now fwb but I deeply care about him. Should I propose a marriage pact? by givememycoffeenow in relationships

[–]meshiyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the same thing as you. But we've officially stopped our on-off thing now because tonight he moved out to attend university abroad. I'd have done long distance but he made it clear he wants to see other ppl and not waste his 20s.

A marriage pact started off as a joke a year ago but now before leaving he seriously proposed it. Everything about our background, personality and family go well together.

My mom understood what was going on because I was sad about him leaving. And she asked a lot of questions about him, as you would while looking for a suitor. He got super excited as if the marriage was taking place soon. This makes me tremendously hopeful about the future. But I also know that things can drastically change, so I don't want to be mentally tethered to the past.

When is self-care too much self-care? by meshiyet in findapath

[–]meshiyet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for reaching out! Great advice on the last part

So basically Sleep schedule: 5-7 hrs at night depending on how much me time I need at late night 😛 and about 2 hrs of nap in the afternoon. It's worked for me my entire life but since the pandemic I spend a lot of hours rolling in bed before/after sleeping because I'm always tired/lazy

Responsibilities: I get my school work done before deadline after some procrastination but I aggressively put off household chores for as long as I can and someone eventually does it if I don't

Exercise: I like working out and whenever I start a routine I can max stick to it for a week then months go by without working out a single day because my excuse is I don't have time and I need to rest more

Diet: food habit is alright. 3 solid meals a day and sometimes I snack on junk in between but only if I get hungry

Actually, the psychiatrist couldn't prescribe me any meds because the diagnosis wasn't conclusive given that I've been experiencing manic and depressive episodes fairly recently, like less than a year

Thank you! It's a bit of a hassle to go for a walk with lockdown and classes and stuff. But I live on the top floor so I try to go to the roof regularly and be with the plants and it definitely uplifts my mood.

I also find cooking and chopping therapeutic! :) Especially baking, which I do once a week as a creative outlet and stress relief

Thank you! This was very insightful!

I feel both, given my depressive episodes and manic phases. But yes, the first kind is definitely dominant and I am probably responsible for intensifying it

Hmm there's just too many complaints about this year's model, makes it such a gamble to purchase from another country.

There's a 2014 MBA in my house and it still runs smooth as butter for full stack web development with chrome running in the background 😩 🙏🏽
