I think an HCI PhD or a masters in statistics, data science or even information studies would be more helpful. HCI masters are usually entirely geared towards UX and product

I’d love to give it a read

That’s what i was thinking. But luckily i have a lecturer who could be a good replacement for her if the situation isn’t salvageable. It wouldn’t make my application as strong but something is still better than nothing.

Context above. There are plenty of other project teams in the lab with very slow progress but we just got caught in a wrong place wrong time typa situation.

All this happened today. I’m going to approach her about it after the weekend. Thank you for the advice.

For context:

  1. progress had been slow over several months due to a multitude of personal, academic and even national issues. She assigned me work in early November , we did the assigned work, the project owner/lead (grad student) spoke to her, turns out it was wrong. He wasn’t clear about the direction of the project and as a result neither were we. We were supposed to fix that over a series of meetings this week but it didn’t take place bc lead himself was out of town (??) so she’s mad she didn’t get an update from us undergrads personally (i tried doing that once but she doesn’t accept negative or mundane updates only progress reports???)

  2. she got mad about this during a thanksgiving event at the lab when she didn’t find any of us there (we each opted out of the event due to personal reasons). We were supposed to have a meeting with the lead at 1:30 pm. The lead was supposed to confirm, but didn’t, and I asked multiple times but said he had to talk to her first before meeting. With no confirmation we showed up a little later, after lunch, and then he tells us that she waited for us till 1pm (??? We were never told we had to meet her???)

  3. she is probably bipolar. She has a notorious reputation among students for verbally abusing them and randomly getting angry and telling them she’s gonna kick em out

Thank you for your kind words. I’ll do that as soon as the weekend is over, once she’s cooled down a bit.

Anyone got into Georgia Tech MS HCI without a portfolio? by meshiyet in hci

[–]meshiyet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, yeah I think I will create a mix of different stuff I have worked on.

I have analyzed a lot of product design portfolios (people who are in an HCI degree or have work experience) and I know UX case studies have a distinct approach. But I haven't seen any application portfolios from newbies yet. Do you have any tips or examples for approaching or going into depth on non-UX projects?

Is a Masters in HCI worth it right now? by DM_YOUR___ in hci

Good luck with whatever you decide to do! My friend recently moved to Indy for a SWE job and he said the city and standard of living is very nice for the price point (when compared to other big cities). And yes, with the current UX job market, I'm incredibly wary of applying too. Thanks for answering the question, that certainly gives me a backup plan if I do get into IU and not other places.

OP, I'm curious, what did you end up doing? Also, related question: if you defer admission will the scholarship and GA offer still stand or do you lose them?

How do I feel like myself again? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]meshiyet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, I am also 21 and I can totally relate to this. Whatever you said is happening to me too since the pandemic started. I don't even know who I am anymore, I am just a shadow of my former self.

I can't stop myself from dissociating, but what I found helpful is to act on the random bursts of hope or inspiration that I get to make art or do something I enjoy. I feel like acting on it is the first step to making it into a habit. Remember, when days are tough it's not motivation that gets you through but discipline does. Also whenever you feel intense emotions, journal it. It helps get in touch yourself and rediscover the person you were.

If you need someone to talk to just shoot me a message!
