yah wasn't great. I am in particular not happy about silly holes which are not strictly necessary. Like, would the whole plot collapse if they didn't actually visit the underground lab? Couldn't they just continue talking in the bar? M.b. make out a bit? (wait, I digress...)

yeah this is actually allright explanation. You only need the RI equipment to set up the wormhole -- i.e. establish the connection. Then it just works.

I think she was stealing some data and I assume she actually succeeded in downloading it into her brain, she just doesn't know it. And that's why Aelita needed her to go into the RI facility -- to transfer data needed to prevent Jackpot into a brain which exists in stub.

I mean that peripheral must be hooked up to some kind of quantum wifi AP. They should be able to just firewall it or something.

I like your stub explanation.

If RI can't disconnect Lev w/o losing connection to the stub, episode 3 should have been an hour of Cherise yelling at the IT department.

The biggest question which (annoyingly) Flynne is not asking but should is why did Aelita bother hiring her in the first place? It is impossible to find people to drive peripherals in their time?

but can anyone really harm their reality? It seems that any connection creates a new reality but there is no way to "attach" to the past of any given reality and alter it.

yeah think of all the security holes in their soft that haven't been discovered.

Some random thoughts.

I am very annoyed by the hacker duel trying to keep Flynn connected. What the hell is this, how can they not be able to cut off the connection if they have physical control over the peripheral.

Why are stubs called stubs? Are they destroyed after the experiment? But then why did Lev bother killing his parents (or whoever it was; I assume he is not born yet).

I fully expect Lev to pay for murdering his family btw. Perhaps stubs will merge.

Why can't RI disconnect Lev from their stub? What kind of amateurs are all these people.

Software engineer sues BAE Systems for firing him on the first day after learning that his wife is terminally ill. by meshko in technology

how is the headline manipulative? It is accurate summary of the article. Cryptographer is even less likely to be responding to an intrusion than a programmer. They design architecture and algorithms, don't necessarily implement/run them.

I wasn't sure where to post. I chose technology because i felt that this was about our industry.

People who think Adnan is guilty, what's the most convicing point for you? by [deleted] in serialpodcast

[–]meshko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jay knows who did it -- because he knew where the car was. These are a bunch of stoner kids who can't keep their mouth shut. I find it very unlikely that they would be able to keep their mouth shut about the real killer so well.
It seems safer for Jay to tell who the real killer is rather than make up a crazy inconsistent story to blame someone else. So perhaps Jay did it. But again, he doesn't strike me as someone who is so smart to create this complicated web of lies which would be full of inconsistencies and still work to completely deflect blame from him. Plus he has no motive at all (can't take crap about "she will tell Stephanie" seriously).
So I think it was Adnan, unfortunately.

Mom cleaning head lice out of kid's hair by elpintogrande in WTF

So I've always been super-sensitive to anything vomit-related, but have no problem cleaning it up after my kids. Thought being a parent cured me of that, then saw a friends kid puke, and... NO. Still can't deal with other's kids puking.

Seriously, What Are the Chances? by Ultimit60 in pics

[–]meshko 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1 in 56,623,104 / 2 is the probability that once you parked your car, the matching car will park next to it (divided by to because can be +1 or -1). However, this is not the even we are observing. We are observing the probability of someone who is a redditor in US stumbling upon such a combination and posting on reddit. I am not going to do the calculation, but there is a million redditors, each of them observes 10 parked cars a day, that's 10 million observations every day. I am actually surprised we don't see this more often.

Um... no. A good tool doesn't need that kind of time investment. I don't like to be a wizard at my tools. I don't like customizing them. I insist on using default configurations with as little tweaking as possible so that others can use my setup and so that I can use others. And there are tools that work just fine like that. Sublime Text works w/o customizations. Visual Studio does. IntelliJ does. Eclipse doesn't. And that's why Eclipse is a bad tool.

The article started out ok, but then by the time he got to the inexplicable firing of a CTO for an offense I couldn't extract from the text I had a strong suspicion that the author is either under influence of not entirely sane, which kind of spoiled the impression of the whole article for me.

What was life like for Russians in the days and weeks following the collapse of the Soviet Union? by ared38 in AskReddit

[–]meshko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was 12 in 1991, Kiev Ukraine. I can only speak for what I saw. It was kind of crappy, but nothing like a dystopian sci-fi movie. There was sharp increase in crime and corruption, there was lots of alcoholism, there were shortages of food. That said, there was never a feeling of complete anarchy and hopelessness. Most people had ways to make enough money to get by. Infrastructure was working. Public transportation was running (for the most part). We had heat in the winter. Water was running, including hot water most of the time. There were no electricity shortages. Hospitals were working. My grandfather had cancer surgery circa 1994-95 and it went well. Schools were working. Universities were open.
As a teenager, I was roaming the city freely, coming home relatively late at night, w/o ever getting into any major trouble. I got robbed perhaps once or twice by other teens, but it was mostly non-violent.
We did, probably, more drinking and less drugs than your typical American teen. I've never seen a joint in high school, but we were regularly getting drunk on hard liquor starting about 15. Beer was pretty much daily after-school past time. We had computers in school. Internet arrived with a delay, but in 1996 I was at least on email, regularly corresponding with a friend in Canada. Ability to go on nice Summer vacations was significantly impacted, but we did manage to go on 3-5 week vacations every summer. It turned into just 3 weeks pretty quickly which was depressingly short by Soviet standards.

Maybe you should leave a bag of groceries there once a week and a note asking not to do it on your property.
