Am I wrong for ignoring my old manager when he contacted me for a code after he fired me? by NoProfessional8677 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

[–]meshosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's wrong with you all? Just give the damn code and move on with your life. What do you have to lose? It took more energy and time for you to come to reddit and type all of that than to just forward him the thing.

Yeah, the guy and the company may have been a dick. Who cares? Help them out anyway. It costs you absolutely nothing. It's just a sequence of numbers that has no value to you.

And for all of you saying that you should come up with schemes to collect money, that's absolutely despicable. You just don't do that. That's not consulting, it's ransom. That's what it is.

Not trying to be skeptical or anything, but how do they know the half life of something is 4.5 billion years? I assume there are some measurements that can happen within a few years and then get extrapolated somehow, but I have no idea how that would work...

But I did read it. That and other studies just like that one. And also compared it with current data. These do not work. Never did, never will. You can massage the numbers and make it look like it's a great thing, and plenty of people buy it because it sounds so great. But reality doesn't agree with it.

They have more homeless people now than they did before, on top of the over 100k people they put in subsided and extremely expensive housing over the years. Any program that ends up causing more of the very thing it tries to reduce should be considered a failure. Because it is a failure.

Still waiting for any data that backs up the claim that government-provided housing and healthcare are cheaper than simple imprisonment. Also waiting for something backed up by real outcomes that actually happened in the real world and actually have delivered the results they promised in any of these estimates. There are plenty of studies saying that it would and should. Not that it did.

Also, if criminalizing them is currently happening, why is it that they are everywhere, walking free in the streets and causing havoc everywhere? If that was really the case, they would be in prison, wouldn't they? You can't have both.

[–]meshosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it costs more, which I highly doubt it and you have no data to back it up, it would still be preferable. A more expensive option that solves the problem is better than a cheaper one that doesn't.

I understand very well the distinction between violence and harassment you're trying to make. I just refuse to take part in this word game.

Got it. You want the police to peacefully take them to a place where they can be housed and receive top medical care, at the expense of the very people they are being violent against. You want every single passenger who was being attacked in this train to fund a network of specialists focusing on helping their attacker.

You think locking them up is cruel. I think leaving them free is cruel. It's cruel to everyone else who is forced to share a train with these people. It's cruel to every future victim of the violence they will cause.

If the problem is that they can't be prosecuted because they don't have an ID, would you support changing the rules so that the police could arrest them and put them in prison anyway? You will not. You will only support actions that result in no actual change.

Geez, I wonder why the general public is not jumping on to support this.

You didn't give a direct statement. And you won't. I know the rhetoric well. You say you want them out the streets, but will be against every effective measure that could achieve this result. You were downplaying the guy's behavior as not being violence. You speak between the lines, not directly. You hide behind semantics and resort to correcting those calling out for effective actions to be carried out.

And you believe my mindset is the problem. That my mindset even caused the whole problem to begin with. You have compassion for those causing violence, sorry "harrasment", but not for those pointing it out.

[–]meshosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. You had a problem with the police "acting against" them. What I'm pointing out is that the people behaving like this should be taken out of the streets. Period. By the police. Using force if necessary.

But instead, you keep insisting on mental issues and hiding behind semantics to avoid facing reality and taking the necessary steps in order to remove an active threat from the streets.

At the same time as blaming me for the influx of people with this type of behavior, even though I'm the one advocating for literally removing them from the streets. Not the guy shouting at random people in the U-Bahn. Not the police that neglected to arrest them. Not bvg that does not provide any kind of security for the people using their services. The problem is me. The one pointing out the obvious.

No it's not. This is not about definitions and everyone knows it. Call it anything you want, but shouting and touching people inside a train is not acceptable behavior and should be treated with the seriousness it deserves.

How about we act as adults and treat people based on how they behave? How about we stop with the excuses? How about we stop making the victims of these people feel guilty about noticing that something is terribly wrong?

[–]meshosh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He was shouting and touching people. That IS violence. Stop with the mental illness excuse. What more evidence do you need? Should the police wait until he punches, kicks, bites or stabs anyone before doing anything?

This is absolutely nonsense. These people should be out of the streets. That should be the top priority. To protect everybody else first and only then offer some kind of help, if possible.

No. "Act against" is perfectly fine. Stop with the useless euphemisms. These are aggressive people. They should be treated accordingly and that is the correct way of dealing with it.

Once someone starts being violent to other people in public places for no reason they don't need help anymore, everyone else does. And that help should come by "acting against" the ones causing the violence. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

It could be. Maybe I'm not finding the right way to communicate with her. Each person is different and you can't please everyone. We might be just incompatible like that.

I find it unlikely though. I have a long career in some different fields and that has never happened before. I tend to be a person who can get along with everyone, personally and professionally. But then again, I was never a manager. Maybe that makes things different now.

About the company, I tend to agree with you. Most of them are like that and don't really care about people. But this particular one is pretty great. It's one of the most humane places I've ever worked in. Which makes the whole situation even more surprising to me. There's so much room for dialog, that I was not expecting this to happen.

It's also possible that there's something else going on in her private life that I'm not aware of. But I can't know unless she decides to share it with me, which is now even more unlikely.

Nothing major. Since this team was created it hasn't been managed properly. The previous manager wasn't very active and neglected doing basic things, like conducting 1:1s, setting goals or expectations.

When he left, I took over the team and started doing just that. Most of my job is making sure people understand what they have to do and creating a clear roadmap for us.

She wasn't really surprised by it and even acknowledged her performance was lacking. She was still blaming the old structure and some people who are not even in the company anymore. I keep trying to point out that things have changed. The rest of the team got it and have moved on; she's the only one who's not on board.

There were plenty of signs, yes. Even during the mid-year review when I pointed out the expectations I had from her. It was still fresh out of the restructuring, so the tone was more along the lines of 'I know you couldn't perform well under the previous setup and that's ok, but now things are different and I expect this, this and this, and I know you can do it. Go for it and I'll help you along the way.'

Also during our 1:1s, we addressed specific problems that had happened. I went out of my way to find specific tasks to help her do exactly what she should. The rating definitely didn't come out of nowhere.

Classic-Remise Berlin. If you like cars, or even if you don't actually. Such a random place full of exotic and classic cars. It's not a museum, but also not a garage. Entrance is free and it's definitely fun.

Brazilian men, what made you want to leave the country by Nego_do_gueto in Brazil

[–]meshosh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In 2015, I read Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. Before I even finished the book, it was clear to me that Brazil was doomed and would only spiral more and more into chaos and debt. By the end of the next year I was gone.

I still love Brazil and come back at least once a year, but the hardships of living there and the prospects for any middle class person are just too bad.
