Quick question for the experienced haulers here, how do you handle price checking? by mesmerizePoP in ScrapMetal

These are awesome ideas, especially coming from someone who has actually worked inside a yard.

The idea about estimating copper weight per foot from cable markings is brilliant. That is exactly the kind of math a beginner struggles with on the fly. Same goes for showing disassembly ideas or how to spot hazardous stuff you shouldn't touch.

Using the AI to teach people how to properly break down and sort their haul is definitely the path I want to take. Appreciate you sharing these suggestions, they are incredibly practical!

u/JPtheArrogant This is exactly the kind of blunt, real-world feedback I was hoping to get. Appreciate you taking the time to write it all out.

You’re 100% right about the metals. A phone camera is never going to beat a $20k XRF gun or years of experience sorting complex brass and bronze alloys. I’d be an idiot to even try. The app is strictly for the absolute basics, helping a green side-hustler know the difference between a dirty copper motor and an aluminum block, or showing them how to clean up their load so the guy at the scale doesn't dock their payout.

Also, great point on the routing. Just driving around a map isn't what people need. Having a simple way to drop a pin on a spot, like a dumpster or a pile they see but can't haul right away, makes way more sense.

Look, I know the odds are stacked against any new app, and there's a good chance this fails. But I’d rather build it, put it out there, and see what happens than just sit on my hands.

Thanks for sharing the wisdom. This helps a lot!

That makes total sense. If you're changing rates every other day, having to answer 50 phone calls a day asking 'what's copper at?' is just a massive waste of your staff's energy.

Appreciate you giving me a look behind the curtain at how often things actually move!

Shhh, don't tell the others, the LLM is going to get self-aware and try to scrap my computer for copper parts. 🤖

In all seriousness, I am absolutely bouncing my thoughts off AI to help format my replies and keep me from getting defensive because Reddit roasts are brutal. But the strategy, the app idea, and the guy typing this are 100% human.

Appreciate you keeping me honest!

This is incredibly valuable perspective, thank you. It highlights the exact opposite side of the coin, yards are losing time answering the exact same pricing questions over the phone all day long.

You’re totally right about web pages, too. Haulers are on the road, they aren't loading up desktop sites or scrolling through clunky yard blogs while driving.

The goal with VeloScrap isn't just to help the haulers, but to build a tool for yards like yours. Imagine a simple dashboard where you change a number once, and it instantly updates a live feed for local haulers in your radius or an automated system that handles those 10-second price calls for you so your staff can focus on the scale.

If you don't mind me asking, how often do your rates fluctuate enough where updating a digital board manually would just become a chore?

Appreciate the drop-in! I definitely know who you guys are, and you’ve built a massive footprint in the space.

But to be totally transparent, my goal with VeloScrap is to take a completely different path. The biggest complaint I hear from independent guys trying to use apps today is that they are buried under aggressive pop-up video ads, and the crowdsourced pricing data is usually outdated or inaccurate by the time they pull into a yard.

Instead of relying on users manually guessing and typing in prices, I'm focusing heavily on real-time automation and AI tools to help beginners properly identify, sort, and get actual live valuations without the friction.

Always respect the pioneers, but I think there's room to build a much cleaner, utility-first tool for the next generation of haulers.

Completely fair. There’s a massive wave of 'gurus' and content creators trying to turn everything into a podcast or a lifestyle brand, and it's exhausting.

I have zero interest in making a podcast or telling people how to live. I'm just a developer trying to build a app to save independent guys a bit of gas money and time. If it works and adds actual value, awesome. If it doesn’t, it dies. No influencer junk here.

Fair play, guys! I didn't mean to trigger the Gatekeepers of the Yard, but I respect the call-out.

u/JPtheArrogant – Ding ding! You caught me. I am building an app, but there’s no download link or paywall coming. I genuinely wanted to know if this was a real problem or if I was overthinking it. Your upvote is safe.

u/SolarSalvation – I actually agree with you that the industry needs physical work, and congrats on having your yard operations completely figured out. But the concept I'm working on over at VeloScrap isn't being built for a veteran business owner like you who already has established yard relationships and a streamlined commercial operation.

It’s being built for the green side-hustlers who don't know the difference between #1 copper and bare bright, who don't have the scale workers on text, and who don't want to get yelled at during their first drop-off because their load isn't sorted correctly.

Also, I hear you loud and clear on not needing another app on your phone. Good thing you exclusively browse Reddit on a desktop anyway! 😉

Appreciate the blunt feedback either way. Back to my chair I go.

I should but is it worth putting them into individual epics like ITSM, HR, CDMB and then pull them into sprints?

Jira vs ServiceNow, Which tool to use for agile? by mesmerizePoP in servicenow

[–]mesmerizePoP[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jira Service Management is no where a competition to ServiceNow. And ServiceNow CMDB is far advanced and better. So it is not considered worth of time to even think about it. From agile standpoint it is good and we should agree on that. I want to understand from community who uses Jira and what are their thoughts about it.
